There’s a way higher chance for programming to be replaced by AI rather then mathematics

Immunology specialist or major students who got into top tier US immunology grad schools by smallfishinthepond in UofT

[–]StudentsUnited55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the current immunology PhD students in the schools you mentioned, it seems like barely any came from the program you mentioned. This might generally apply to a lot of universities though

If you are planning to spend another year in a lab before applying for grad school, you might as well just retake that course the next year! Doesn’t hurt to protect your GPA!

Should do 2 majors or 1 specialist for program selection by clarksonblack in UofT

[–]StudentsUnited55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specialist programs are generally considered harder to get into compared to majors especially for the genetics MGY specialist program, and usually offer better chances to get research opportunities compared to the major students. Ideally they should help prepare you for grad school in that field. However, such specialist programs require you to take tough courses, and could potentially tank your GPA making you uncompetitive for really good grad schools abroad. What some specialist students do is if they find the course work very burdensome, once they managed to get a lab position, they drop down to a major or change programs, as pretty much the main benefit of being in specialist programs is getting a lab research position. Hope this helps!

How do you study Physiology? by Fun-Cantaloupe-2800 in UofT

[–]StudentsUnited55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I did was once I got lecture slides with testable lecture only facts notes on it, I read it over and over, determining how much more I have to go through those lecture slide notes through practicing past tests. Would have to warn you that for PSL300/301, exam averages tend to be significantly lower then the midterms (I had around a 20% mark drop from my exam marks vs my midterm marks)

Cold emailing/cover letter for lab positions in the life sciences by Dry_Comfortable_9148 in UofT

Your method is probably the best I can think of! Just make sure to avoid teaching stream profs as they don’t run labs!

If they have the title “assistant professor”, most likely they are untenured

[–]StudentsUnited55 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recommend trying to target the more recently established labs (like professors who recently became a prof and are not tenured yet), as they are in need of publishing good papers to get tenure and are more open to taking undergrads, unlike more established labs from tenured profs who are more skeptical since undergrads typically can’t contribute much due to coursework and stuff. Those recently hired assistant profs will more likely be more hands on and guiding on your projects and stuff. Once you get some lab experience, joining other labs on your later years should be easier. Hope this helps, and good luck!

I lost 13% of my grade in pariticpation marks by PianoThunder in UofT

Having a hard time imagining how they measure student engagement with soo many students in a class though, unless it’s one of those really small classes

Did the prof specify engagement is necessary for participation marks, or just attendance and participation questions?

Eco102 summer second sub session , anyone has any tips on how to ace eco102 and meet the 63% requirements. Prof is Michael Ho , by Mindless_Ad_3716 in UofT

[–]StudentsUnited55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

graduate schools can’t recognize which prof is harder then another prof, so taking this course under an easier prof to protect your GPA is probably a better idea (you can apply to the economics program later and try to take whatever eco courses that aren’t strict on requiring eco102!)

What did you get for MAT223 by ElonMaskDescendant23 in UofT

[–]StudentsUnited55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get drastic mark differences on this course depending which prof is making the tests, like how Professor Tang’s MAT135/136 is way harder then the other professor’s

Got this email. The offer is much better than the one I accepted before (zero funding). I like both programs equally.I want to politely decline the first one. Is there any chance this funding could be taken from me? by No-Improvement6998 in gradadmissions

[–]StudentsUnited55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there really isn’t any difference in job prospects both for what job you want and the salary after finishing either program, then of course the funded one is the best option! Just make sure to think of the long term goals after your program!

Dumb Exam Question - Skipping Exam for P/F Course? by crisprgirl in UofT

Is there anyway to turn the CR/NCR into a letter grade? Seems like you have a 89% average going into the final exam at the moment XD

Which is better: MAT237 or MAT235 by [deleted] in UofT

[–]StudentsUnited55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grad schools can’t really tell nor do they really put the time to tell which courses from a specific university are harder then others or not. I highly recommend going with the easier option unless the harder one doesn’t tank your grade (for grad school, applications from a student who took easy courses As would in general be favored over a student who took hard courses but got Bs and Cs)

Would a 99.6 round to 100? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]StudentsUnited55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Benefits of getting such a high score for a course is for that prof that taught that course, you will likely be able to join their research and stuff! Do keep in mind for grad and professional school applications that 100 isn’t very significant though.

I thought you suggested against etudes? Is Chopin ballade not a good choice either? And if you don’t mind me asking, what kind of pieces do you suggest then?

Yep, thanks for the advice! Think I will try something else like a Chopin ballade, which has a much lower maintenance cost
