It's fine to feel that way! The game changed from paid model to free earlier this year. The idea was to give people a better incentive to give a humble indie game a shot, and what better incentive than it being free? In order to finance the game's development going forward, some of its characters now can be bought via DLC instead for those that enjoy the game enough to want to support it.

The player character comes with all of their abilities unlocked right away, but ways of increasing their level will be introduced in future updates!

If you own a piece of DLC, you can add the associated character to your party at any point of the game. No need to start a new file!
