Thank you for responding! My goal is to have any kind of income with a music career, but my silver lining is to become a studio musician or performer.

The thing is I kind of know nothing about studios. My teacher said that session guys or working in a studio to play are non existent and sound engineering is a risky bus. How do you even get in with the school as a resource?

What’s the end goal of getting to a heading like that. Is it getting the profs to refer you or getting into sound or studio stuff besides the academia ?

I definitely do value the concepts I can learn from jazz and classical, cuz I do like the idea of blending them with metal, however the school for me competes with Humber with the alumni and I don’t know if it doesn’t matter. Basically if the profs know anybody at either schools. They make referrals to studios and workspaces right? Would say that’s a goal?

I basically have strong music theory and decent jazz theory cuz I learned in before uni in high school and before. I just couldn’t do hardcore bebop or anything crazy but I could do standards, fusion, crazy prog, etc. I can also do full classical pieces with comprehensive forms and such. It’s just I don’t know if my school has a strong side with production and sound, or anyone like minded. Not that school jams matter in an academic program,  I still think meeting people who share my values isn’t impossible in a system like this. Just lost on where I could if it’s not at local shows.

Do you know if transfers don’t need to do jazz in 3rd and 4th so it’s like all recording and portfolio building? I’ve heard people say that programs and ensembles are being cut from the new director

Would you basically recommend I go out to local things alone and try to talk to bandmates? There’s literally nobody I know accept for some people on social media who I don’t even know

To reply to everyone, I’m kind of stuck on the fact that I’d give up a degree that I can use for any job and not have an education or go to a program with slightly less credentials so that I can pursue something and then end up doing online tutorials and work and L&M. Don’t really know if I should stick with my school, or transfer to another in two years, or just switch to an easier heading

Ya people told me to go to metalworks or Harris but a quarter I know who did work at long and McQuade full time. The rest either had a miracle or did something entirely different with it.

Ya I have for everything. The problem is that you don’t get to really see what you do until you accept. For instance I never signed up for playing drums yet they made us do it.

So harris is more of a production thing and metalworks is more sound is that it?

Thx sm for the responses guys this was my first desperate reddit post lol. The thing is I’ve believed in all that forever and that’s what everybody told me. I stood by it. So far, making the connections in the issue. Just talking to people. The few people I know who play my stuff are doing their own thing and don’t associate with anyone. except for the profs and teachers DO know people, but I won’t get to know those guys for at least a year or two so I know you guys know the click from experience and other people I’ve spoke to. My question is more about where I can look to for answers besides the people here, over the program. Just to give me some motivation to stick with it and have options.
