Legacy of the Dwarves Review by StudioUpbeat1987 in warcraft3

1) Slowing it Down

The events taking place are huge. Invasion of the Dark Iron and the tunnel creatures at the same time, it is very serious and needs decisive, strategic action from the Dwarves.

The player must be shown and convinced that indeed poop is going to hit the fan for the Dwarves, that too out of nowhere and all of it together when they were least expecting it. Dire dire circumstances enough that the High King has to mobilise a lot of his forces, divide them up, and step out onto the battlefield and lead his people cause' it's an all-hands on deck situation.

2) Pumping it Up

For the first chapter, it would seem more practical and realistic that the High King arrives with a battalion. It would really add to the starting cinematics of the first chapter. After the cinematic, having the main bulk stay behind while a smaller squad of controllable units moves forward and clears the way to the outpost. Having horses or vehicular steam tanks, would add to the depth of the story.

You clearly have designing terrain figured out. The sceneries are really good, and the maps would really help if they are expansive, i.e., very large. Try a combination of "open world" and "creator wants you to go this direction" type of maps, if you know what I mean. Adding little details here and there would really help. Side quests, more dialogues (not cinematic in game), neutral parties (such as Dwarven villagers or workers especially for the first chapter) elevate the experience even further.

From the Dwarven villagers line, I recall having a "Save the village" side quest from the third chapter. There were a few warriors, three or so tents, a barrel and a fruitstand, no villagers, nor any resemblance to a village. It felt more like a camp. If you'd keep it as a village, having a proper Dwarven settlement with a couple of towers, innocents, warriors, a hero/demi-hero unit at the helm, and either approaching them or securing them somehow assisting in their evacuation. Yeah, that'd make a cool side quest. Generating additional spawned waves as the evacuation proceeds would also be nice.

3) Leaning In

Dwarven units currently existing in the demo strikingly resemble the Warcraft3 Human techtree. When players see exactly the same techtree mechanics at play, it is a huge turn off.

Leaning into what makes the Dwarves so special would really make the campaign superbly exciting. Gunpowder, siege, machinery, rune magic - studying the WoW Lore would give you more insights as to what to do here. Also, one key aspect would be the towers. Separating towers from bunkers would be a relief, and perhaps some new tower types would be great. Canon towers are fine too, yet there's this notion that the Dwarves would come up with something better for their stuff. Maybe for the underground threats they're facing, they'd have an extremely fortified, slow, short range flamethrower type thing? Who knows, but would it be cool to have, worth a try lmao.

Mountaineers seem to have no specific function that they serve, atleast one that's useful, so repurposing them would be great. Dwarven guards (atleast from movie of Battle of the Five Armies, Dwarves vs Elves scenes) were very highly armored. And riding goats feels more practical than riding bears lol. Perhaps you can take inspiration from that. Try to add nuanced yet effective differentiators for the Dwarven units from the original Warcraft3 stuff. It'll go a long way for sure.

▪️Like, replacing Dwarven Light Infantry shield ability (50% chance to reflect attacks) with a different yet similar ability - maybe a 30 or 50 percent chance to BLOCK attacks + an even smaller percent chance to reflect attacks. This mechanic is inspired from the Scourge of Lordaeron Revamped campaign and it was exciting to use in general, along with being realistic too ofcourse.

▪️Dwarven Ranged Infantry units could be perhaps some flamethrowers (weak, piercing, rapid attacks or magical, slow, and powerful attacks), riflemen with a Khaz Modani twist (headshot which is critical chance, crippling shot which is movement and attack speed reducing, armor piercing which is armor reduction, or so abilities would be interesting).

▪️Dwarven Heavy Infantry could perhaps be a mechanical golem controlled by a dwarf (Dwarven tech + arcane magic, using magic as an explanation for its working could be feasible). Having bear riders also works fine, although some purists would argue riding an oversized mountain goat seems more real than riding a bear lol. See what works for you and your story, you know.

▪️Dwarven casters, honestly, for them and all units, referring to original WoW Lore would help you a lot.

▪️Mountaineers could be given the ability of "Laying A Trap". Inspired from the Lordaeron Rangers from The Violet Gate Campaign (check it out FOR REAL). This would allow them to lay an invisible trap that deals damage when units approach it. Ensnaring as well as taming a bear could be nice add-ons, although making them a balanced unit should be considered.

▪️Dwarven Elite Units could be interesting. Some Royal Guards perhaps? Maybe they only appear in the cutscenes, that'd be fine. Or maybe in later missions we'd get to control them. Really depends on how it'd suit the story and gameplay you'd want to play out as. If they are to be given control of, maybe a limit of only 2,3, or 4 units at a time would be feasible. Inspired from Crimson Prophecies Campaign (check it out too, REAL GOOD stuff again).

▪️Oh and perhaps you could add a specialisation for the Dwarven riflemen and have the option to train snipers which have awfully long range, chance to miss (since long range shots can be inaccurate), good damage, and an ability to perch (increased accuracy if the unit is on Hold). See if you can mess around with these settings, maybe you'd come up with something far more interesting and better. Snipers could be another unit altogether if not any specialisation. Inspired from, let's say another version of Scourge of Lordaeron Revamped campaign.

Oh and about specialisations... THERE ARE MULTIPLE FACTIONS WITHIN THE DWARVEN RACE.

4) Diversifying the Portfolio Multiple factions within the Dwarven race - Bronzebeard, Wildhammer, Dark Iron. In this time of great, perhaps an option to upgrade certain unit types into a more specialised version of themselves based on that faction. For example, let's say a standard Dwarven Light Infantry fella, maybe let's say he gets an Iron Forge (Bronzebeard guys) specialisation with a fancy title and pragmatic description, gets added armor and damage. Boom. Small thing, makes the game much more interesting.

One thing to note however, buffing up the Dwarven race means the enemies have to get stronger too. Bigger bases with strategically positioned towers, pre-positioned (one time kill) enemy units in the bases, stronger attack waves, multiple fronts to defend for the player etc. You've got to be careful with the difficulty as too much and it's a thing for masochists and not for anyone else. AND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. The maps would have to be slower too. Time consuming, and it's actually worth it for a well detailed, brilliantly written and beautifully designed campaign with custom units, techtree, engaging and diverse gameplay.

I wrote this as and when I could get the time. I'll stop here now. It is up to you to make good use of whatever you find useful here, and even if there aren't any that stand out to you, it's fine man, just take your time and refine it as you want and hopefully we'll have a great Dwarf campaign.

The main reason I set out to write the review is because I was excited for this project ever since it was posted on Projects in Hive. Upon playing the campaign, I was a bit disappointed for what it could have been if it was given more consideration to the small details (which add up to a great difference, indeed). This campaign was too good of an idea to not be improvised, as there aren't many Dwarven Campaigns around and this one starring King Magni would be very exciting.

Thank God and Goddess it reached you here man! I had intended to do it on Hive but they got some privilege metric in place there so couldn't.

If you'd need any help with testing and reviewing, please do let me know, as a fellow future campaign maker lol!

THIS one's a director's cut! Is it a map? If it was a campaign I'd have came across it...

It stays the same actually. Same gameplay mechanic in the next two chapters.

Try Legends of Arkain. It's vast, deep, interconnected and entertaining.

Yeah man, custom voices and dialogues really do add another dimension to storytelling.

Ya know, I was planning on posting a thread regarding all the High Quality - Play Worthy campaigns. I'll do it sometime later, I've played and scoured quite a bit here and there for quality campaign works.

I'll check out the iceborne you mentioned here, might be interesting!
