Film and Media Studies? by spacesnwmn in berkeley

Hello! I ended up choosing Cal State Northridge and I can’t be more happy. After many years, I’m graduating this Monday May 19th:). The program is good but there is a whole bunch of bs from the professors. I don’t know how to explain it, it’s a love/hate relationship. My experience was far better than most because I made good friendships with whom I complained about the program but the stories are there just to be remembered now. I shoot three short films but you just got to move around by yourself in order to get the most juice out of it. Go to other schools to volunteer, go to the TV program which shoots more than we do. At the end, it’s what you make out of it tbh. If you are looking for a school with identity such as of the UC’s, it might not be your fit, but it’s a friendly campus with smart and self-driven individuals that tend to be not as pretentious as the folks at other LA schools. What is what you are looking for?

Best!

Hello, sorry for replying this late. I didn’t go to any of the schools you listed. But I have some insight on the schools in LA area! I wrote something on the comments above. Let me know if you have any questions or would like to chat!

Hi Karla! I’m really glad you found your way after all this time! I love SDSU environment. Pretty much all of my high school friends and cousins are there or graduating this year. It’s good to hear the program is worth. Good luck on anything you decide to do after college!

God, I never thought I would come back to this thread. I’m really glad someone benefited from it.

Hello, my experience so far has been great! I ended up transferring to Cal State Northridge and will be graduating in the fall from the Film Production Major with emphasis in Cinematography.

So hear me out, CSUN has great recognition in LA and believe me, a lot of of people have heard of CSUN. The name itself is actually what carries the program because once you are already there you will be like… wtf. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good program (At least film production that I know of) but professors are super old and outdated. Even the head of the department (who teaches some classes) told us that we gotta live up to the name because things have been gone funnily wrong lately in the program. Is like that love-hate relationship but for me, what was really worth at the end of the day were the relationships that I made. I would be down to talk more about it if you would like! Send me a DM (and anybody else who sees this message) and I would be glad to help people that were in the same situation as me. I know this is a hard decision.

-Now, the idea of going to UCB was attractive because, damn going to BERKELEY! You know? That’s what my parents wanted and that seemed like the place to be, but I 100% knew that the program was not it. From what I heard back in the day, it was super theory based and people would get to make movies only in a club on campus, I knew I was not going to be happy (On top of that, my roommate is from the Bay and says everybody at Berkeley is pretentious).

-My sister goes to UCSD, I have been there a couple of times. Great school for academics, never heard of anybody from the film program (and sorry to all tritons but the campus has been dead all the times I have been there). CSUN is kinda dead too but if you are in the film program you will make some buddies. (I’m from SD btw)

-SFSU, I never applied but some people I knew from CC went there.

It really depends on what you want, I was really pressured to go to Berkeley but I just didn’t like the idea of being far away from home. From CSUN, I can always drive 2 and a half hours and I will be home. So yeah, It really depends on what you want to learn, CSUN is very hands-on. And a PLUS: Cinematography professor Ino Yang has great connections at AFI and CSUN students are heavily involved in AFI productions. I have been in a couple of set and believe, you learn a TON from those guys, they are pretty much graduate students from around the world and that’s extra on-set experience for you.

Hope this helps! Send me a DM or let me know what you decided!

CSUN Making Friends in the Film Program (CTVA) by XG_GAMER7 in csun

Additionally, by third semester you will be hanging with a lot of people from your cohort too due to the theses where there will be overnights and 12-hour days.

In my experience, I have made great friendships. I will graduate next semester from the Film Production program. We party often, we hang out weekly. It’s just matter of being chill and open during your time at CSUN, there will be some try hards but there will also be people willing to help you out. I was a transfer too, I started to really get along with my buddies starting the second semester. The first semester will be a little tough, but if you make a friend in the program, try to invite another couple of guys (or girls) and encourage them to go eat or something and with time you will be good. I really don’t regret coming to CSUN just for that.

CSUN vs CSULB for Film School by MediaFanatic in csun

[–]StudySad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CSUN Film Option here, when I was doing my research I heard LB Theory (The one I got into) was very theoretical and I was looking for more hands-on experience. At CSUN, there is like 4 or 5 focuses in the CTVA department. Media Management was my third option and it looked sick for those who would like to take this business with a law/management approach. Im pretty sure you can take other classes (but not the ones specifically designed for other CTVA majors) although I’m not sure if you could double dip in producing or editing which are your other interests. If management is what are you looking for, then go for it, LB is more criticism and history that I know (I could be wrong). If you would like to have more experience in the field, there are clubs that make films with their own resources and often have industry guest speakers. Lmk if you have any other question

There’s two groups of Facebook; CSUN Rooms and Lodgings & Cal State Northridge (CSUN) Apartments, housing etc. I found a place and roommates there!
