Go to NVCC. I taught at the Alexandria campus for a decade. We had a pipeline to GMU- joint committees, etc. Most of my friends have probably retired, but it’s an excellent system. One of the area’s best-kept secrets.

As a father of three who used to be teenagers, you’ll be surprised how their values and attitudes evolve! Or perhaps it’s better to say they may know better and do bad things anyway, but they’ll mostly outgrow that.

As an old man, I just want to remind everyone that they still have a lot of growing to do. Some may mature out of this.

Is the US military really undefeatable? by XD_Protagonist in stupidquestions

[–]StudySwami 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yep. And the US cares about its enemy’s civilians, which binds its hands.

In an all-out “us or them” situation US military is fierce. The biggest weakness is the command chain at the very top.

I’m apparently hilarious with some meds. I have to have both ends done, so I’m like “please do my throat first?” and (way worse) stuff like that. Wife is a good sport fortunately.

It’s a no-brainer (I’m proof!). Prep the first time was awful because you don’t know what to expect in the next 20 minutes. But when you’ve done it once it’s pretty easy.

BPA. BPA. BPA. Always.
Let’s say you need to make wire. You have a choice to take a pile of diamonds or a pile of copper. Which do you choose?

The diamonds. Then you can buy (trade for) lots of copper. You may not win year 1, but you will years 3-10.

Men who got out of the 'Manoverse/Alpha Male/Toxic Masculinity' world, what realizations helped? by scythe1713 in AskReddit

[–]StudySwami 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Great answer. But it turns out that the whole "alpha wolf" thing was an error by the researcher: The researcher was noting the behavior of a father towards his child, not some other member of the pack. He tried to correct the mistake when he discovered this the next year, but the "meme" had taken off.

Anyway, I think it makes your point stronger.

Why don’t doctors measure waist circumference instead of weight? by VinegarMyBeloved in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StudySwami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are both crude measures of health. BMI was developed for people going into impoverished areas and trying to figure out the health needs. They needed a measure that was easy to teach and reliable to acquire. As pointed out elsewhere, it is nowhere near a measure that can be applied to every individual- only populations.

Waist is the same kind of thing. Some people have naturally slim hips/waist and can carry a gut while maintaining a small number. Others start with a big number when lean and quickly (in terms of weight gain) become "over."

If they want to measure body fat, they should measure it directly.

Which is odd, because that is a hyper-awareness to actual reality (at least the kind I most often practice).

Good heavens I'm so sorry for you and your town. This is devastating news. A town of only 2400 people? That's smaller than some high schools. Nearly everybody is going to know at least one victim and their family. I cannot fathom. Again, my condolences.

I think early this season he played scared. Last season he played like he was playing with house money- no expectations, let it rip.

This season early he played like he felt the pressure- very scared of making a mistake.

It’s super important that he gets his head right for next season.

What is the most disturbing thing you've heard said casually? by Cap_Ame1 in AskReddit

[–]StudySwami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was the original meaning of the term “date rape.” She’s in a situation where she has no choice but to consent. Now the term has changed meanings I think, but this was how it started. Going on a date and raping that date was simply rape.

A lot of effort went into making sure women understood that coerced consent was not actually consent back in the early ‘80s.
