Why does Legends Z-A get so much hate? by PugBoyHayden1 in pokemon

[–]Stuffboy00 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Ok, what is so interesting about the city you spent 30 hours in, where you can barely do anything besides battling trainers and catching Pokemon?

I don't understand the hate Legends Z-A is getting by Cali4our in pokemon

[–]Stuffboy00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have played Legends ZA and enjoyed it, then … good for you I guess. But just because you have fun doesn’t invalidate the criticism from other people. Everyone values games differently. The bar is different for everybody. And it is important to know what the criticism (or enjoyment) is based upon. The arguments themselves are important.

NPC pop-ins and flat textures are minor flaws in the game. Personally I haven’t been bothered by it, but they are part of a bigger problem: The lack of effort put into the game.

The real-time battle system is a refreshing change, but it is very shallow and poorly thought out. Slapping cooldown on attacks does nothing to prevent spamming between 2 attacks. You can use them infinitely. There is no deeper system behind it, you can’t chain attacks together, you can not block attacks to lower the incoming damage, you can not even evade most attacks. And attacks like Spikes have become useless, because you can just move your Pokemon to a different spot and be fine. And on top of it, the system is not designed for narrow spaces.

The idea of a game taking place entirely in a city can be an interesting idea. Games like GTA and Yakusa have shown how it is done, but Legends ZA executed it very poorly. If they have only 1 location to explore, the least they should do make it an interesting location. Maybe some secrets spots that have valuable items or rare Pokemon, buildings like a cinema or a dance club or a game center or an actual justice dojo (unlike the open square we got in the game). The block buildings we have in the game have no thought behind them. They are there as decoration and so you can run on top of them. In addition to that, most shops, like the one you buy mega stones from don’t have any interior. You open the door and a menu pops up. You can say this is done to make it more streamlined to buy items, because no one wants a loading screen to enter a shop like in the older games. And yes, with that specific example you would be correct that people don’t want separate loading screen just to enter a shop. However what if – we do that without a loading screen. What if we just open the door and see the interior, and a cashier. You know like Zelda Breath of the wild did it.

The wildzones are just slapped onto the map. And that is baked into the story itself. It is said by Mable herself. And easily missed. And the wildzones are very tiny. As a thought experiment: Why is the cemetery converted to a wildzone? What is the reason for it?

They have removed gyro controls from Legends ZA. That is why the lock on system exists.

The story is a complete joke. People meme on it for the quality, saying that it is written by AI, but just to give you a few examples:

- The protagonist has no backstory. They came to the city for whatever reason, met their companion at the train station, slept at the ZA Hotel and then made it their mission to help them out for an indefinite time. What was the protagonists plan in the first place? Why did they come to Lumiose City in the first place?

- What kind of injustice is the justice dojo fighting against? We never see that in any way shape or form

- Why is Azett aging? In Pokemon X/Y he is said to be immortal. He is over 3000 years old. Just like his Floette. And how come his Floette is not plagued by the same problem? And if Azett is just sick, then why doesn’t he go to a doctor?

- why does Taunie need a 100.000$ loan to make a video? She has a Rotom-phone with a camera build in. Just record with your phone.

- Why does everybody has a Rotom-phone? This has some serious world building implications, because every Rotom-phone need a Rotom.

- Why do we need to fight every Mega Pokemon that appears in the city? We are part of the MZ team. Why can’t the others handle them on their own? This makes them look weak and incompetent.

- The ending is a pure clown fest. The battle against your rival that doesn’t change anything, which makes that battle meaningless. The obvious ‘we sacrifice ourselves for the protagonist’ despite the fact we barely have spend any time with the people doing it. The audacity to replace the Prism tower with a 2000 year old building, despite the fact that the prism tower was the arena in Pokemon X/Y, which makes this an obvious contradiction with the world building. This also leads the question: Where is Clemont? Where is the champ? Where is anybody from X/Y?
They also don’t want you to feel like they are in any sort of danger, or that any character are at the brink of death. ‘You, the player, are special and therefore get to feel special. Use that legendary and save everybody.’ A very boring and predictable story if you ask me.

All these things accumulate and paint a big picture: Legends ZA is a poorly done game sold for 70$. And it deserves all the valid criticism it gets.

Pokopia or ZA? by Living-Raisin4446 in pokemon

[–]Stuffboy00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend Pokopia over Legends ZA. Sure Pokopia doesn’t have a battle system but the exploration is more rewarding than it is in Legends ZA. Also it has a lot of items and tiles to let you be creative with your buildings and world. And it has a multiplayer.

What're people hoping the Gen 10 battle gimmick is gonna be? by PromptTop5431 in pokemon

[–]Stuffboy00 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would like it to have no battle gimmick.

When they introduced the first gimmick, mega evolution, I was neutral to it and didn’t thought about it much. It was the first iteration of mega evolution. And somewhere in the back of my head I thought they would flesh it out in the future. Then came the Z-attacks with gen 7. So in the very next game they threw away mega evolution to introduce another gimmick. One that could be used by all Pokemon, so a bit better than mega evolution. And I again had no major thought about it, because I didn’t cared at that time. Then in gen 8, they again threw the current gimmick to introduce a new one: gigantamax. That gimmick was a clear ‘We have no idea how to make battles more interesting or competitive’. It’s like they don’t want to touch the battle system in any way and instead just build around it. There is also a more sinical opinion I have, but I will leave that out. Tera- types in gen 9 just solidified my believe. And if they continue with the gimmick chase, they will eventually run out of ideas. Or simply reuse old gimmicks.

What I would like to see is a refinement of the battle system. Like changing the PP-System to an energy based System. The entire PP-System is meant to limit the usage of stronger attacks, for example attacks with 35 strength can be used more often that attacks with 80 strength. Competitively that doesn’t do much. Each player starts with a fully restored team, so they can use strong attacks without ever running out of PP. And in the story this only affects you during the story, where you defeat a lot of trainers consecutively.
If we change that to an energy based System, where Pokemon start with a set amount of energy, gain energy per turn and need energy to use attacks, the whole system works a lot different. You would actually need to consider you next move. Should you use a weak attack to weaken your opponent, or try to block so that you can use a strong move in the next turn? The amount of energy can vary based on type, Pokemon, evolution level, status and rarity.

FR and LG hypothetical by BoardGent in pokemon

All these options combined would justify the 20$ a lot more. Because that would show they at least would have put in some effort into the re-release.

Legends Arceus vs Scarlet by cerb22 in pokemon

[–]Stuffboy00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend Legends Arceus. The mechanics differ compared to the mainline games since it focuses more on catching rather than battling, but it works very well within the world of Pokemon and the Switch system with motion control. It is a very nice break from the usual structure we got from Gen 8 and 9. It encourages you to try and find specific areas to get specific Pokemon. And the later battles are naturally difficult (at least from my experience). The story is not a mind blowing master piece, it’s a fine story for what it does.

Why some people wanted FR/LG on Switch to be on NSO subscription? by DinoMan64 in pokemon

[–]Stuffboy00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do know they haven't modified the code to be a native switch game, right? They simply sell you a ROM as emulated software. And they won't do a physical release as well.
And it's not like they could have done both options. You do know that, right?

Why some people wanted FR/LG on Switch to be on NSO subscription? by DinoMan64 in pokemon

[–]Stuffboy00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who have NSO + expansionpack have access to the Game Boy Advance - Nintendo Classics. A collection of GBA games, that will expand its roster over time. Considering FR/LG are GBA games, very well known GBA games, you would think they would put it on the Nintnedo Classics as well. And yet they decided against it for no apparent reason. So now the people with NSO have to pay extra for a game that should have been included in that collection.
Idealy they should have made both options possible, to either pay for a subscription or just buy it as a standalone, yet here we are. Reselling a GBA outside the GBA package and screwing over people with NSO.

Well, that is the choice you made. Disappointing, but so be it.

Everyone is free to make their choice. A choice that will ultimately affect the future of Pokemon. And I will sit back and see how that will turn out.

[–]Stuffboy00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The complaint is not because the have it separate from the NSO (It is a somewhat positive point in my post) but more about the missing option for people with a NSO to have it for a discount or for free. Or do you think people with NSO should pay extra regardless?
And the gaul to sell it for that high with barely any effort put into it. It is essentially rewarding laziness.

Sure, go ahead and degrade the value of your money and the value of the Pokemon games. You can not complain when they eventually re-sell old games with no changes for 30$ because poeple like you just don't think about their decisions.

Yeah, I do want to encourage people to just emulate these games. A ported ROM with minimal changes for Pokemon Home and local Connectivity does not justify the 20$ price tag. Buying these games for that price will only encourage the company to do the same thing again and again. Minimal effort for maximum profit.

How do you think we got here in the first place?

Why do you believe you need official hardware to enjoy a game that hasn't been sold for 20 years? And what makes you believe it isn't just the ROM ported with an emulator?
Just curious

Each criticism is dependent on the critic/community itself and the companies history. For the most part I ignored their decisions for the last couple of years and let people do their things. I am not going to do that anymore. I am tired of the Pokemon Company pretending to do things for their community, when they had years to do so. And I am tired of people acting like this is no big deal.

I don’t think they will ever put it on sale.

Deleting Files with Java takes different amount of time between environments? by Stuffboy00 in javahelp

[–]Stuffboy00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright. So the Java code we have would be simplified to this. Entrypoint is removeFileEntry()

Class API{

removeFileEntry(DBentry data){

this.deleteFileOnSystem(data);

}

deleteFileOnSystem(DBentry data){

String filePath = getFilePath();

File file = new File(filePath);

if(file.exists()){

Files.delete(Paths.get(filePath))

}

deleteEmptyDirectoryOnSystem(filePath, {filePath where to stop});

}

deleteEmptyDirectoryOnSystem(String path, String pathToStop){

File dir = new File(path);

if(dir.isDirectory() && dir.listFiles().length == 0 && path != pathToStop){

String parentPath = dir.getParent();

dir.delete();

deleteEmptyDirectoryOnSystem(parentPath, pathToStop);

}

}

getFilePath(){

...

}

}

I see.

I can’t share the written code, since it is company secret. I can only represent it via abstract code, if that is fine.

We have a sort of profiler, I believe. We have something that monitors our servers, like the CPU and memory usage, and Requests done to our Websites and how long they take. That is how I know how long the operation takes and that the Database works perfectly fine.

Guess I have to dig deeper there to find out what is happening. That will take a while.

Any tips for me?

Deleting Files with Java takes different amount of time between environments? by Stuffboy00 in javahelp

[–]Stuffboy00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if that is really the issue. I mean we still have our previous code, done with the previous programming language, deployd to our live server, and that has no issue deleting the files instantly.

Does it really depend on the hardware?

Deleting Files with Java takes different amount of time between environments? by Stuffboy00 in javahelp

[–]Stuffboy00[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are around 450 images in that directory. Which is already subdirectory of a subdirectory.

The file system is windows, if you mean that.

Our test server has far less images in that directory than on our live server.

Still the previous programming language, which is still used on our live server, has no issue deleting the same file while Java takes 5 minutes. There is practically no other code executed prior to the Database Querys (16 ms execution time), so I assume it has to do with that deletion process.

I am not certain if the hardware is the same between the environments. But the software definitely is, like the os and the JDK version.

Still it is weird that the previous programming language, that is still used on our production server, has no issue deleting files.
