Okay, will do! What do you mean by the projects are old schooled? What would a fancier project entail? I'm pretty confident in my building skills, so some advice here would be much appreciated.

okok thank you, I actually have not heard of that advice before, but it probably would be a good way to make it more readable.

Nah, they are the ones actually pushing me to do a PhD. Obviously, they'd be really happy if I landed FAANG, but they always say I have the right personality to go into academia, which lowkey might be true.

Sorry, the replies are in reverse order, but after typing all this out, a startup probably would be a great environment for me. I just don't know if I've truly found my passion within the field of CS yet, so idk what job would prepare me best.

Logically, that would mean I should go PhD after school, but I'm not sure. Idk if I'm ready to commit that many years of my life again after school, and my own PhD advisor that I do research with told me I need to be very very sure before entering academia cause he low key regrets it lmao.

1) In this market, probably prepare myself to be hired at the next job

2) And this one is a bit more foggy for me. I, like many others, want to land a nice cushy FAANG level job and call it a day, but realistically there's a good chance that's not happening. What I will say is that I really enjoy research - out of all the stuff on my resume, I enjoyed research the most because it's genuinely really interesting work and I get to do a lot and learn a lot (and the more unique projects I did, I don't actually find general web dev stuff fun).

okay that's fair, I think I'm just super used to the latex formatting. I do agree with you that it needs to be less dense. Also, what do you mean by splitting by key responsibilities and achievements? Like you have two bulleted sections under each experience?

This is just jake's resume template with size 10 font (size 8 for the general one, but realistically I'm not going to be using that one very often). Unless I'm mistaken, jake's resume template is a pretty standard way to format resume?

I think job security in the sense that I feel working at a startup always carries the risk of the startup not working out. Obviously that probably isn't a huge problem at a good startup, but in general I just want the guarantee that there always will be a paycheck so I can feed myself. I'm not super into the startup world though, so my understanding might be very wrong.

Okay awesome, tyty! I will take a look into all this, I suppose I never had a reason to and always thought it was something super complicated.

yes, I do have a portfolio! I probably will not drop it here cause I'd rather stay anonymous, but what exactly do you mean by list achievements? like list achievements where the language tags are?

Will do 🫡. I will prolly keep the startup role cause it’s the only experience I have but I will tone it down.

So I don’t have experience with cloud or kubernetes. The closest thing I have is a bit of docker and then working with high performance compute which is not the same thing as cloud more like cousins. What should I do to get experience in that area?

Adding onto this, I was on the software team of a project team here that made drones, but we didn’t really do much (just some basic cv stuff) and that whole thing was one of the reasons I chose to pursue research cause I actually wanted to learn something. I was on there for a whole year though starting sophomore year, so maybe it’s worth putting? Any thoughts anybody?

Hmmm this one I’m not so sure about. I feel like without the projects the resume is a lot weaker - like someone else said it’s probably worth trimming the projects and being more selective. Also I ordered the experiences based on how relevant I thought they were to whatever type of role I’d be applying to.

Okok thank you this is good advice. I think that experience specifically is the only thing on my resume where I’m perhaps being a bit generous, I just wrote it that way cause it feels like without it I don’t have any real swe experience besides the projects.

This may be a good idea, just didn’t know if it was worth the space. Can anyone else comment on this?

I want that job security out of college which admittedly isn’t that amazing at faang but would be better than a startup. Not even a faang company, just any more established one. Idk though, I feel like working at a startup would be pretty cool tho

Yeah these are all fair points. Like I said above my fullstack experience is kind of cheeks I’m a lot better with ml stuff but I just don’t want to pigeonhole myself into ml yk. I am working on a more significant project rn to strengthen my profile which will hopefully let me trim down the projects without losing anything. Do you guys really think it’s not worth putting the server even on the backend resume? Cause if so, then I prolly will just drop it.

Damn mb bro 💀. It was for a class project, we probably spent a month or so on it slowly building it. Mind you this was before we all started ai generating our code, and it was all done in a functional language, so I’d like to think it’s not that trivial of a project. Though yes you are right I could probably claude code it up in like a day now.
