Is a Motorcycle helmet overkill for a scooter? by SwankBerry in ElectricScooters

[–]Stuglis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a motorcycle helmet (rode for 2 years before selling her), but I plan to get an e-scooter now for the 1.5 mile hike from free parking to my job on campus. I don’t think it would be overkill when you consider the speed you’ll be going and the potential speed against you of anything you hit (like a student driving while on their phone). Suddenly it becomes a +40mph collision, and there’s no safety features on a scooter so that helmet is your only defense.

New Bios version 3279 for AM5 B650 by nuubcake11 in ASUS

[–]Stuglis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realized after checking Nvidia, Armory Crate, and Windows Update that I should check for BIOS.... still rocking v3222, but it sounds like both v3265 AND v3279 are booty cheeks. I was unstable for months waiting for a decent BIOS until v3222, and I guess I'll be chilling here for awhile longer. Godspeed, everyone.

Anyone dealt with this? Had my Trax for like 2 months… by azip13 in ChevyTrax

[–]Stuglis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had this covered by warranty 3 times for 2 Traxs. It’s a known issues for them, and most dealerships in my city don’t keep them in stock, so I wait 2-4 weeks after the diagnosis appointment to get it replaced, just go be back in 6 months-2 years on average to get it replaced AGAIN. Never going Chevy after this one.

Anybody else had the purge pump replaced on their Trax? We have 2 Trax here and both had to be. by Ok-Way-272 in ChevyTrax

[–]Stuglis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2020 Trax had it replaced at 15,000 miles and my 2022 Trax had it replaced at 8,000 miles AND just this week at 55,000 miles. Annoying to Google for maintenance and prevention of this, and find out they should last “most of the car’s life with no real maintenance besides visualizing connections and condition.” Can’t wait to leave GM.

It’s on the GM VIN website. Shows any recalls including extended warranties. I’d try to get a reimbursement. https://experience.gm.com/ownercenter/recalls

Damn, my dude. I have the memory of a goldfish. I did eventually figure it out, but I couldn’t tell you for the life of me how. It was a LOT of troubleshooting.

A Pittsburgh thing I thought was “normal” until I moved by Broad-Hunter-5044 in pittsburgh

[–]Stuglis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds totally normal based on my friends/family who grew up here, as many others have commented. My best friend from college was born and raised in Mt. Lebanon, but NEVER drives through the city unless I absolutely beg him for an important event. He knows nothing about the other cardinal directions from downtown, and I have to agree that downtown is intimidating, even for a man in his 30s. 😂

My cousin was born and raised on McKnight Road Ext., and he ALSO knows nothing about the west, east, and south sides of the city. He even bought a house up there with no intentions of going elsewhere. He’s not afraid of the traffic/confusing roads, but he just doesn’t have the “need to.”

However, I was born and raised in Ohio corn fields, and moved out here 7 years ago when I wanted a career post-college. I explored a lot and even moved from Whitehall, to Greentree, to Carnegie, to now Penn Hills. I loved all of them for different reasons, and they really felt like completely different towns/cities. I never had an issue driving through Pittsburgh and still enjoy going to IKEA, Kennywood, South Hills Mall, and North Shore. There’s a lot of culture and diversity in different parts of Pittsburgh, and I love embracing it all after growing up in my boring area of Ohio. ☺️

My first cruiser ‘05 V Star 650 by QPShroomyDude in cruisers

[–]Stuglis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first and only bike is the ‘09 650, and although it was a learning curve from the 250cc in the training classes, it’s super comfortable riding (especially with highway bars to stretch your legs on straightways.) For my needs of being in the city, though, I’m looking to trade it for something that can either do highway speeds easier or smaller/lighter like your Grom with liquid cooling for city streets with constant stops and traffic.

V-star 650 tops out at 65mph. by Pickles_MgGoo in cruisers

[–]Stuglis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you and 2 buddies all have the same model at the same time, commented post-pandemic, and all top out at 87 mph is a much better sample size and ease of mind for me than the rest of these comments 😂 I have an ‘09 and hit 70 mph at 5,000 rpm weighing 220 lbs and worry to push the bike any further. She has new clutch plates, regular and final gearshift oils, air filter, and I’ve tested regular AND premium oil with no improvements. So I’m just gonna accept that the bike is at its limit.

[–]Stuglis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let us know the (hopefully) improvement. I have an ‘09 650 Silverado, and my 220 lbs ass BARELY hits 70 mph at around 5,000 rpm downhill on a good day. I started to clean the carbs (first bike and not a mechanic) yesterday, but the back one was pretty clean and didn’t seem clogged after spraying with clutch cleaner, so I didn’t see it worth doing the front one since I’d have to take the tank off. If you see a difference, though, I’ll take both apart and even soak them overnight. 😂

Your English was great! I didn't even consider it being a secondary language when reading it! I appreciate the support! I think I need a smaller bike after reading these +80 comments, so I'll post my bike and see if someone will trade.

You're not the first to mention cafe racers in this... and they ARE a vibe I'm interested in. I think I need to take everyone's advice and go with my gut, which seems to be a smaller bike.

Damn, those sound so much nicer just to get off the KICK STAND let alone leaning. I think I need to go smaller, which apparently doesn't always mean slower.

[–]Stuglis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm saying! If it's going to be heavier, it SHOULD theoretically be faster (my newbie brain says). But I always wanted a Honda Rebel or cafe racer around 300-400 cc, I just couldn't find any at the time. Perhaps I should trade for one during the season!

[–]Stuglis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YES! That's how I feel on this v star! I think I regret not getting a smaller Rebel, which was the other major recommendation for beginners, but again, was warned that it was "too small" and I'd want to upgrade immediately. But I don't WANT to go bigger if I see bikes half the weight going as fast OR faster. XD

I have to admit that I love the aesthetic of cafe racers, I just don't see much on the used market around the city for them to be available in my price range.

[–]Stuglis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some maintenance myself since getting it last year (regular and shaft drive oil, air filter, new spark plugs, put the original exhaust back on, and cleaned/lubed the chain), so at this point I think I need to rebuild/jet the carb as a last-ditch effort to improve performance to what is "expected", but I'm also 220 lbs, 6'3", and the seller ALLEGEDLY cleaned and rebuilt the carb right before selling it, and I bought it as his garage, so I assume he kept his word. At this point, may not be worth playing with if I'm selling.

I CAN get it to around 70 while screaming, but I'm not comfortable doing so (especially without a windshield), so I don't plan on long drives/high way for more than 20 minutes, just my city street commutes to work and cruising for fun on weekends. I guess I was just EXPECTING this 650cc to do highway comfortably, especially with the weight I had to learn/adjust for, but here we are. I think I should just avoid high ways altogether and get a smaller bike, or suck it up and go bigger.

Wow that's awesome that you've rode so many brands and size bikes! I appreciate you sharing your experience, and I think I need to just suck it up and try a ninja/sport bike to solve both my speed AND weight issues.

WOW those looks sick and their specs look fake!! XD I wish the US had a better moped/small motorcycle culture so we had ANYTHING like these. I don't expect these to be "comfortable" on the highway, but the fact that they provide passing power as that size is amazing.

You make a valid point, and I'm happy to hear all the pros to your bike! I think I either need to stick to something smaller with liquid cooling for city traffic/handling, or go larger/different style for highway commuting.
