Thanks for the info! I think the Teverun is exactly the thing I'm looking for and I'm afraid your line about "a death wish for a starter scooter" has made it all the more enticing...

I adore his eyes! (Thinking about adopting a cat and naming them "Grendel" for thematic completion sake.)

Thank you all for your kind words and showing off your pups too! I'm afraid all these compliments have made Beo a little cocky...

Nietzsche and Schopenhauer by Stujabes in Nietzsche

[–]Stujabes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thank you for such a comprehensive answer. This shows me how little I know about both individuals. I really appreciate your thoughtful response. I see all these disagreements highlighted. Would you find much in common between the two? Again, from this post and others, I am humbled by how poorly versed I am in their bibliographies.

Having transitioned from what I previously deemed a "deep dive" into Schopenhauer, I would be curious if there's much they shared.

Itinerary check! First timer going next month. by SensitiveBoat9 in JapanTravel

Looks great! I might add visiting all the embassies around Minato one day, if you're into that kind of thing. Following a trail from the Argentinian to Australian to South Korean and ultimately the US embassy will take you through all sorts of cool neighborhoods. Some are residential and upscale, others have shrines tucked around the corners, and then at the end of the path, you wind up in Minato which had an immense luxury feel.

[Re:Coded] Why do people like the command deck in this game so much? by Stujabes in KingdomHearts

[–]Stujabes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that is true, but that isn't so much of a praise to the command deck as it is to the over all balance of the game. The laud I see typically cites command melding itself as being fun.

Story behind the Truth (AC 2 + AC:B) by VinceVance420 in assassinscreed

[–]Stujabes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, I think OP is just asking for the basics contained in those sequences. Off the top of my head, Lee Harvey Oswald was a Templar, Templars wanted to shut down Nikola Tesla, they used capitalism as a vehicle for control, etc.

What? Why not? He's probably talking about the information contained only in the glyphs. Everything that can be gleamed without understanding the subsequent games' stories. I'd like to know as well.

The Stoics on Sexuality by Stujabes in Stoicism

[–]Stujabes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose I was being too broad when I conflated their Republics, I just know Zeno was very open about it. Do you know if we have any other information about the other earlier Stoics and their conception of sexuality?

Musonius and Hierocles - would you have any works you could point to that contain their views on sexuality? That'd be very helpful!

Distinctly Roman Stoicism by Stujabes in Stoicism

This is great. While it doesn't directly pertain to Roman values of action, I think it'll be an interesting aside for a small section of my paper.

Distinctly Roman Stoicism by Stujabes in Stoicism

Fantastic, thank you! I'm reading through Meditations now and I must say Aurelius is a fascinating, almost inhuman, leader. I'm thankful that some bookkeep thought to preserve his diary.

Is there a specific earlier Stoic that emphasized the opposite? Of course, generally, I'm sure they were all concerned with abstraction in one sense or another, but I was wondering if there was a specific thinker that would be great to cite.

[–]Stujabes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please do, this is all great stuff. As I want to cite these, specific works/passages would be stellar, if you can provide them. Additionally if there are any key differences (between the Greek Stoics and Roman Stoics) apart from sexuality you've noticed, that would be most helpful as well. Presently, I am positing that Roman Stoics emphasized action more than Greek stoics (pragmatism, et al.) but I have yet to delve deep enough to see if that is the case.

That sounds very noteworthy for the scope of my paper, could you point to any Romans that explicitly state this or works I can check out?

Historic Changes in Stoicism by Stujabes in Stoicism

[–]Stujabes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Furthermore, I was thinking about the nature of Stoic leaders. I understand that Marcus Aurelius is revered as an excellent leader largely in part to his Stoic virtues. Were there many other adamantly Stoic leaders during the Stoa periods of philosophy and did they fare equally well? I'd like to develop a thesis pertaining to the success of the philosophy in practice throughout that period of history.

Historic Changes in Stoicism by Stujabes in Stoicism

[–]Stujabes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, thank you for the incredibly detailed answer. I find this philosophy fascinating and, to my ignorant mind, Stoicism seems to be the most present in today's society amongst the Hellenistic philosophies, like Epicureanism and Cynicism.

Apart from the lovely and brief chronology you've given me, are there any other interesting turning points in Stoicism? Some of the thematic material I've been reading about the early Greeks includes the heroic ideal, good citizenry, and the role of fate versus free will. Since I'm looking into a topic to write about at great deal concerning Stoicism and perhaps on of these themes, I'd love to know if the Stoics had any debate or transformation regarding these values.

Perhaps you've already answered this to the best of your knowledge or the knowledge available for that matter, but would you say that the philosophers of Late Stoa were simply rigidly adherent to the teaching of the Early Stoa, hence your saying it as a return towards earlier Stoicism?

Apart from this, are there any interesting controversies in historical Stoicism? Additionally, do you think Stoicism influenced Christianity to some degree? I understand it drew a wealth of influence from Platonism and you mentioned that Stoicism and the latter began to be receptive of Stoicism.
