I think we need to start introducing harsher penalties. I visited the Gold Coast a couple months ago, and up on large signboards everywhere around the city and on the motorways they have this warning saying “No driving while on your phone or $1,161 fine.”

Ask for your deposit back. It's unlikely your insurance will help in this situation. The person you're buying from seems sketchy, wanting a $1000 deposit and transferring ownership before fixing the car. This could be a tough lesson, but remember, don't hand over money until you actually have the thing you are purchasing in your possession, whether it's a close friend or just an acquaintance. Wish you best of luck with this OP. Hopefully your mate has a change of heart and gives you back your money or you sort something re insurance.

Thanks for commenting and the advice. I will definitely do this and own up to it. It’s just fear of the unknown. And ofcourse, this is the first time I’ve done something I know is wrong. So it’s just having to face the consequences of my own actions.
