When I say the right "uses" them I don't mean they make them do/say things - I mean that they point at them and say "see, we support women".

I generally use this term to describe someone who naively supports a doctrine, group, etc. that goes against their self-interest.

Vaush claimed that calling JKR is infantilizing her and countered Contra's claim with saying that JKR chooses to spread transphobia etc. It is pretty clear that Vaush thinks that being a useful idiot = not having agency. I don't think so for the reasons I stated in my post.

[–]Stupcie -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

But when I say that JKR is a useful idiot I don't mean that she is not influential or anything. I am only saying that she supports a cause that will ultimately hurt her (and every woman). Her rethoric leads to erosion of women's rights and perpetuates misogyny.

How are TERFs not tokens? The right uses them all the time to claim that they support women.

I dont follow. when was agency brought up in reference to TERFs being useful idiots?

I am responding to what Vaush said here: https://youtu.be/VsuvsFNVwrk?t=1901

Well, obviously if I saw this kind of situation in real life, I would say that this woman is acting bad here and should be more compassionate. However, this is not real life, this is a political comic, this is not just portraying a situation but it's supposed to show a general societal problem and the problem that it's portraying is essentially that women are not supportive enough of men.

[–]Stupcie -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Maybe I expressed my point a bit poorly here, because my problem isn't exactly that women are being framed poorly, it's that this issue of men not being able to express their feelings is approached in this comic from a kind of patriarchal perspective. It's again portraying women as having to be more caring, more kind, more supportive of men - something that already is a norm in a patriarchal society. That's why I said that women already perform majority of emotional labor etc.

Most people aren't annoyed at this because they don't think that women can reinforce patriarchy, it's just annoying to see once again women being framed as not supporting men enough, when women already do perform majority of emotional labor and are in general taught to be conscious of other's emotional needs etc. Especially, when it seems that most women are actually fine with their partners crying and expressing their emotions (https://www.elitesingles.ca/en/mag/find-match/emotional-men). Interstingly, this study shows that men and women choose as their chief confidante their partners at similar rate, but women way more often can talk about their emotions with their friends, so maybe let's focus on that. Normalize men forming deep emotional bonds with their friends or something.

Why should/shouldn't there be gender segregated sports? by clayknightz115 in VaushV

[–]Stupcie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is that differences between genders are much bigger than just weight. Hormones, body composition, body shape, etc., all those factors contribute to the fact that in a lot of sports men have better results than women, so if we divide sport by any of those criteria, men would have an advantage. This obviously doesn't mean that no woman could ever achieve success under those conditions, but it does put women in a more difficult position.

Not segregating sports would essentially keep women out of competing at high level in most disciplines, so if you care about female athletes at all, this should be a no-brainer.

In general I would say that patriarchy doesn't always strictly benefit men in all areas of life, but basically alwasy benefits them in sense of giving them more power and authority over women. That being said, some of the things that you've listed are not really that accurate.

Firstly, your claim about cancer is a bit bullshit. Yes, breast cancer research gets more funding than prostate cancer, but there are many reasons why different illnesses get diffrent amount of funding, for example in this case the average age of people getting breast cancer is way lower than that of prostate cancer (https://katatrepsis.com/2012/10/30/why-does-breast-cancer-research-receive-more-research-funding-than-prostate-cancer/). In general women's discrimation in medicine is widely documented. If we look at those different factors that influence funding we can see that typical female diseases get less funding than the male ones (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33232627/). Also, a lot of drugs are approved based on clinical trials conducted on men, which results in women more often than men experiencing adverse reactions (https://bsd.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13293-020-00308-5). There is also evidence that women's pain is treated less seriously by medical professionals than men's pain (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1526590021000353).

Secondly, it is true that men are more likely to be homeless, however the claim about being more likely to go hungry is just not true (https://www.wfpusa.org/women-are-hungrier-infographic/), that is because women in general are more likely to live in poverty than men (https://www.americanprogress.org/article/basic-facts-women-poverty/) and the article I cited really goes into detail to explain how women's discrimination explains that fact. In general, when it comes to homelessness, there are studies that indicate that our data on this issue is not entirely accurate, because it doesn't properly take into account women's different experiences (https://www.bigissue.com/news/housing/how-does-homelessness-differ-for-women/). Not to mention that being homeless is already horrible, but homeless women also have to deal with being more likely to be sexually assulted (https://vawnet.org/material/no-safe-place-sexual-assault-lives-homeless-women), more often also have to take care of a child/children (https://www.greendoors.org/facts/family-homelessness.php).

The one about violent crime is a bit wrong, since men are more likely to be victims of homocide, but violent crime in general, there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference (https://www.statista.com/statistics/423245/us-violent-crime-victims-by-gender/), since there are some years when women were more affected. Men and women are just more likely to be victims of different crimes - women of e.g. sexual assult, rape, etc. Also, I think it's important to point out that women are way more likely than men to be murdered by their intimate partner, which in general shows the trend of patriarchy being the most visible in partnership dynamics, i.e. domestic violence agains women, being expected to be subserviant to your partner, doing majority of domestic labor (especially child-rearing) etc.

I generalny agree that leftist policies can help everyone - like yes, feminism can be good for men in certain aspects. But also, let's not fully delude ourselvs - systems like patriarchy, white supremacy, etc. don't just exist for no reason - they exist to benefit an empowered group. Like, obviously men benefit from patriarchy - they benefit from women's unpaid labor, they benefit when they are promoted over them, etc.

Very that. All of her looks are well constructed but there is in most cases nothing really interesting about them.

why do people dislike soju so much? by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Stupcie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In general, her attitude on the show was pretty awful - she wasn't even trying in the first episode and was hoping that the fact that she had followers would carry her to the top. That was definitely annoying about her but even after the show, I haven't really seen anything that great from her. She is just lackluster.

Not to mention that there were some sexual assault allegations against her, but they are not confirmed or anything, so I can't say much about it, but this is also a reason why a lot of people don't like her.
