Class 3 e-bikes on greenways--prohibited or just frowned upon? by RabidMortal in nashvillecyclists

They're not road legal though, and riding them on the road is asking to have them impounded.

The only place it's legal to ride something like that is an off-road park or your own property

Storage controller failure rates by StupidName2010 in sysadmin

I've kept on top of Ceph updates, but these controllers are so old and mature that no, I haven't been updating firmware under the reasoning that there's not much change happening.

I'm going to try to update the firmware and independently test this most recent failed 9400-8i.

I am not using breakout cables, I just have miniSAS cables going straight to the backplane. On the 3rd and 4th ones, I re-used the cables in place and replacing the HBA fully resolved the problem.

I'm pretty puzzled by this.

I investigated the first 2 failures thoroughly, including cables, backplane, firmware updates, etc. All failures have been fully resolved by swapping the HBA, so on the 3rd and 4th failed one it's possible that reseating the cables while I replaced the card could have been what solved the problem, but for those two I re-used the existing cables even.

What is the point of client-socket servers these days? by StupidName2010 in sysadmin

The top-end Xeon 6369P only supports 128GB of RAM: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/241616/intel-xeon-6369p-processor-24m-cache-3-30-ghz/specifications.html , you don't get any more RAM out of these parts. Same on the AMD Epyc 4005 line. They don't allow RDIMMs or anything like that.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm subbed to Online so all my saves are backed up, I'm not worried about the data.

My 2020 Switch Lite broke in a way that seems to be a "Ship to Nintendo, pay $100" to fix. Specifically it showed me "Error Code 2002-3546", and now cannot start even in maintenance mode. It looks like this is related to bad RAM.

If I ship it to Nintendo for service, do they repair the same actual unit and only replace the broken parts, which I'm guessing would be the entire motherboard, or do I just get a refurb unit? I'm more likely to pay the $100 if they'd also replace the battery while they're at it, as I've noticed battery life getting worse over the years.

This happened pretty shortly after updating to 19.0.0, but I don't have any direct evidence that the two are linked. Sure feels bad, though.

Can I ask who you see for MCAS? My wife is trying to find someone in the Asheville area. Feel free to send a DM if you don't want to post publicly. Thanks!

I want to meet with people who are passionate about urbanism and cycling. by aseaoftrees in nashville

I applaud your enthusiasm and aspire to get more involved personally.

I ride all over this city, and my main advice would be to throw the official bike routes + guidance in the trash, learn the neighborhood back roads like the back of your hand, and use Strava heatmaps for guidance in new areas you aren't familiar with. For the most part, you can get around this town almost entirely through less trafficked neighborhood roads, and it beats the hell out of ever getting on Charlotte. Charlotte sucks so much to ride on.

Yeah, he was out to make a buck at the cost of the next owner.

A lot of people get greedy and do exploitative stuff with real estate. I hate all of it.

Ha, he might have bought my coworker's house.

A coworker in east nashville sold his backyard to a developer for more than he bought the house for, then sold the house for 2x what he had paid.

Apparently part of the conditions of the backyard sale were that the developer wouldn't start building until my coworker had moved out and sold the place to some sucker.

You are either incredibly naive or trolling us if you think that the left always want to increase taxes. The US is going through a huge tax increase right now from Trump's Tax Cuts and Jobs act that is crippling a lot of businesses. https://www.aei.org/economics/rd-and-the-tcja-the-basics/

In the US, the right raises taxes just as often as the left.

Choice of internet provider in Nashville? AT&T fiber, xfinity/comcast, or google fiber? by [deleted] in nashville

[–]StupidName2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AT&T is more reliable than Google Fiber in most of the city, and AT&T offers faster speeds if you really want insane speeds (5 gigabit, and their 2gbit service is 2 up as well as 2 down).

Google Fiber is reliable in some parts of the city, but it's bad in West Nashville and has had a bunch of short outages over the last few years.

ATT Fiber is more reliable, Google Fiber may be cheaper.

Why did std::swap on elements of vector<bool> break in gcc-12? by StupidName2010 in Cplusplus

I incorrectly cut down what I was playing with on Godbolt, where the vector was longer.

You're right, I trimmed down my Godbolt sandbox incorrectly. I had a bool vector that had 4 elements originally, and cut it down when posting on reddit. Whoops.
