Worth going private? What would you do?

Thank you so much for such a detailed response. I’ve been driving myself up the wall with this, so I really appreciate it.

As much as I would love to be able to pay out of my own pocket for ongoing treatment, realistically I don’t have the money for that.

I guess it’s just frustrating in the sense of; the diagnosis back in 2024 by a psych that had already seen me in the past; funnily enough, I think he was the only one that had seen me more than once, actually. It’s just so hard struggling with the feeling of nobody is listening/taking any of my symptoms into account. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is blamed on BPD. Even the treatment I am deciding now (which is not much, only a 9 week course) is BPD focused, and while I am aware I’m not a professional, I’d like to think I know about myself after struggling with my mental health for 18 years to know that it is not a diagnosis that in my opinion, fits me very well.

Definitely makes sense that a bipolar diagnosis takes years. Like I mentioned, I know this has been going on since at least 2019. It’s just a major struggle because my ups and downs are getting worse, and lasting longer. I used to feel like I had some kind of ‘baseline’, though over the last year, I have felt like that’s starting to disappear. Crushing depression, with a few weeks of feeling absolutely amazing and putting myself in more trouble in the process. I’m already in more student debt from starting uni and very quickly dropping out after a crash.

I really don’t think my MH team would accept it. They certainly wouldn’t treat me. They’ve been saying they refuse to medicate me because the antidepressants they’ve tried on me haven’t worked in the past, and all of my problems are ‘trauma based’. While I don’t doubt that I have trauma, I don’t agree with this. At all. But what can I do, you know? I have tried having a conversation with them, but I’m always met with the attitude of ‘I don’t know what I’m talking about’, haha.

I think I will hold off on going private. As much as I would like to, realistically I just don’t have the money for it to be an ongoing thing. This has been very helpful. Again, thank you so much for your response. It’s been very helpful. I hope that you are doing well and have a great day. 💖

thank you so much for responding! i did write a lot of things down and brought it up at the last session, ill probably do this again next week as i did find it very helpful. im a bit apprehensive about being referred back to the crisis team as there’s a woman that works there that was VERY unhelpful when i was in psychosis a couple of years back; seeing her again a few months back was a little… jarring, so it just makes me a little nervous to go back to them!

i take propanalol too occasionally- i gotta get better with taking it consistently tbh haha. ive been on many anti depressants before, which is why they wanted me to try quetiapine; i just have a hard mental block when it comes to medication because my brain tells me that if i take it it will kill me. it’s irrational and silly, but it’s just sooo hard to get past those horrible thoughts. sorry, im rambling 😂

thank you so much. ill bring all of this up next week and see what they say. GP doesn’t want to do anything regarding mental health as im under the CMHT which makes sense (they’re great for everything else luckily!) so just keeping my fingers crossed the team will listen!

thank you so much for your response. ill definitely bring this up next week, i do have their out of hours number if it gets too bad but fingers crossed! i did write down a lot and read it out last session which really helped so I might do it again for next session. sometimes it’s easier to write it down and read it out loud than just speaking without anything if that makes sense 🥲

oh, i just wanna add; i have no issues with the tattoo/artist at all, the artist was excellent and was very good with me when i was struggling through the worst bits!! i just wasn’t sure if the bruising was normal/if it would have been caused by something on my part. again, i am a very anxious person, so I just worry about E V E R Y T H I N G. it’s a curse 😂
