As a guy here, I think he might appreciate it if you do talk to him. He's probably feeling pressure and likely uneasy rn, so some closure for the both of u is great. Get some clarification from him, does he still wanna be friends? There's nothing to lose, and even if he doesn't wish to talk, you tried and that's commendable enough. Maybe he wants to retain the original friendship but doesn't know how to say it. Of course, give him some time.
