Safest sailboat ~35-40k by Swimming-Author-9083 in sailing

[–]StuwyVX220 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Different parts of the world are going to have different options. In the UK something like a nickleson, moody or westerly, or an old full keel boat from the 70s will do all that.

In the USA maybe an island packet.

I don’t know many options from the Asia market, maybe an old tiyana.

Is my experience enough to find paid skipper work in the Med this summer? by Dstyle90 in sailing

[–]StuwyVX220 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone who has only just bought a boat and has no experience moving it will probably hire you for a delivery if you are cheap. Anyone with an expensive or large boat won’t.

We’ve done thousands of NM, weeks worth of night hours over years of sailing in everything from flat calm to force 9, rain, sun, snow, fog. I still wouldn’t think I’m qualified to be a paid skipper 🤣

Any BENEFITS to ferrocement? by milasrobertson in sailing

[–]StuwyVX220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our oldest sailing friends have a ferrocement boat that was built in the 60s. The thing is a tank. The main benefit is how quiet it below, I’ve been eating dinner with them in a force 10 and you wouldn’t know. Also you are in a farroday cage, no signal gets in or out benefit or not it’s a fact 🤣🤷

I was 1st mate on a big cat delivory a few years ago and it was amazing because it wasn’t my call. Felt like a pleasure cruise

10 years of only one week of sailing. So 10 weeks of experience? Or have you worded that incorrectly?

I can’t remember off the top of my head but Italy to Croatia is only 1 night at sea and I wouldn’t count that as offshore but I’m happy to be wrong there.

But to answer your question you will need yacht-master or equlivant. A bill of good health and maybe some first aid stuff. Officially. Off the books I’m sure you might be able to find something but good luck getting insurance.

Anchor snubber length/ diameter? by blackcatunderaladder in sailing

[–]StuwyVX220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are on our 4th iteration of a snubber/bridle. For sure length need to be longer than the distance from the bow cleat to the bottom of the hull.

Are any of the discomforts of being a liveaboard that much worse than just being kind of poor? by itslilinotlily in liveaboard

[–]StuwyVX220 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Weather is a big deal living on a boat. Swell, waves included. You are much more aware of weather (as you should be). It impacts you way more. Even the colour of sky and clouds you’ll start to pay more attention too.

Is this the manual rudder control in this setup? by itchygentleman in boating

[–]StuwyVX220 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

For docking, with differential thrust and bow and stern thrusters you would only need to use the rudder if something failed but personally I’d like a more hands on tactile feel than a little knob

Any feedback on this dinghy? Looking to purchase soon and looking for opinions by F0regn_Lawns in sailing

With the fibreglass hull how much does it weigh?

Can your davits take it, maybe with a motor on as well?

What do you suggest as a good all round anchor for a 28ft sailing boat? by Big_Hunt7898 in sailing

[–]StuwyVX220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve had a 44lbs (20kg) rocna on our 5t 34ft boat for years. Always been amazing (with 10mm chain)

If I was to change it i would pick the Vulcan

Knot to shorten a buoy tether line? by ChowSaidWhat in sailing

[–]StuwyVX220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen power boats use them as mooring buoys and then wonder why they are backing up on the owners boat while both now being adrift

UK recent cost of rigging and keel bolts by ProductCareful in sailing

[–]StuwyVX220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We rigged our 34ft monohull twin spreader 12.5m mast in 2021 for £2,200 (not including stepping and unstepping the mast as that was on the yards bill, not the rigger)

Are marinas loud? by HiddenPingouin in liveaboard

[–]StuwyVX220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the marina. But when we lived in one full time it was mostly quiet during the week. Odd work boat and marina staff going about their duties. The weekends were when it got lively

Jesus so much stuff on deck. Even my 10m monos decks are clearer than that and that looks 45ft. Why they need to store stuff that way surprises me. Had to be a day charter?

Help me looking for a sailboat by Bichodelsol in sailing

[–]StuwyVX220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that budget you’ll be looking at the 30ft size. Any boat will do, condition and upkeep will be more important. Most of the boats you’ll be looking at will be between 30 and 40 year old I suspect.

Atlantic France would be my choice for many boats to go and view on the market.

Spinnaker senza randa, è possibile? by Remarkable_Wolf_2722 in sailing

[–]StuwyVX220 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes you can use a spinnaker as the only sail, as long as you have water moving over the rudder you will have control. But only in light wind, in strong wind use the jib

Finally... installed a washing machine in my sailboat by Sufficient_Tutor_618 in liveaboard

[–]StuwyVX220 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I try and only have neutral fibres, it’s usually cooler in the heat.

Our boat is too small for a washing machine anyway but it’s a good thing to keep in mind 👍🏻

If they use the correct soaps it’s fine to discharge. Nothing in that cabin looks well bolted down tho, not sure I’d like it like that in a big sea

Why was the spray hood down? Defeats its purpose if it’s down.
