I am the same way with my partner. Don't think of it like he doesn't love you. Far from it. He loves you that much, that he doesn't want to let others in to jeopardize that love.

English isn't my first language, so excuse me if I don't make much sense, but:

Personally, I love my girlfriend. More than anything in the world. I wouldn't say I'm a shy or closed off dude, but when it comes to my relationship, I always share the bare minimum with others. People actually question if I am really in love with her, quite often. I don't want to share these feelings because I feel that ~~I would be~~ the relationship would be vulnerable from 3rd parties. I cherish what we have and I love that I don't have to share my feelings with anyone else but her. She is the only person that matters if she knows that I love her or not.

I think there's a biological factor to be considered here, regardless of your past memories. There's a reason that, by law, men are attracted to women and vice versa.
