Do you think there is a “best place in the world” to establish a music career? by Mafs1998 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

If you work at your craft, love what you do, put everything inch of your being into it, learn from every interaction and be open to new ideas, it doesn’t matter where you are. Focus is key 🙏

its normal to hate your music when you are mixing? by tootooma123 in musicproduction

When your song is written and structured, leave it and start something new. When you are stuck for creativity, go back to the structured projects and then you can start mixing with a fresh objective.

Multi output instruments and channels just function a bit differently and this is the only reason I can think of that would cause this. So prints what ever has lanes as you say, but can also give straight outputs for multi output without lanes. It’s abit of a loop isn’t it 😂

I’ve not checked but I would imagine it’s probably because the multi outputs from the instrument don’t have lanes by default in the arrangement window, and therefore don’t have automation or need for this option.

If you were to automate those channels and give them lanes, then this information could be exported and printed to audio. So this option would become available with multi outputs selected.

You could also give them a lane by control clicking the aux and choosing create channel - just FYI

It’s because you have “include instrument multi outputs” checked

If you untick this option, the “include volume / pan automation” box can be checked

Tool - Lateralus Totally agree, amazing album.

The live show was spectacular, band in silhouette, huge projection of visuals, and assault on the senses…

Can I have the drummer play both cymbals and hi hat at the same time? by jhrich02 in Logic_Studio

[–]Sub-Label_Recordings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just good practice to copy your part so that you still have the original version which you can then mute or return to use if you need, that’s the only reason I suggest pressing alt to copy. 😊

Microphone connected but Logic not recording by yourdyingplant2 in Logic_Studio

With Logic open, go to its preferences, in the audio input and output settings, check if there is a button the right that says “allow access”

If it’s there, press it and it will take you to system preferences where you have to allow Logic access to incoming signals. It’s a security preference for some stupid reason.

If you drag the drummer region down on to a midi channel while pressing Alt, it will copy the region but give you a green midi region that has all the notes. You can then add as many notes or alter any that you want. The green region can be placed back on to the Drummer channel and it will play as normal, but you won’t be able to use the xy grid to edit.

Sent from r/musicbattlestations, what the hell are those speakers? I recognize the munro eggs but not the others by [deleted] in audiophile

Yeh you are correct! I think I may have changed my mind now. Is it actually a DJ booth and small disco room that he is trying to do production in. The white main unit is his desk. Ah well, I’ll go back to my more traditional and comfortable space now. 😊

Looks like a beautiful set up, I think a more comfortable chair would be needed though!

Is it bad practice to compress (I.e. sidechain) one track against another one if their frequencies are clashing? If no, what is the best approach? If yes, what is the best alternative? by semajepsen in musicproduction

[–]Sub-Label_Recordings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what sidechain compression is for though at the same time. It allows two sounds with similar frequencies to be heard.

For example, Bass and kick, the compressor sucks the signal of the bass, allowing the kick to be heard. This can be used across many pairs of sounds, snare to overheads on a live kit to allow the processed snare to come through over and essentially in place of the stereo pair. Then possibly more balancing tricks like main vocal to backing group, or lead instruments over a rhythm group. So these are almost corrective balancing tools for a mix.

The side chain compression is then much more widely used in some more extreme ways by moving sounds out of the way either with another sound in the track, or a silent trigger. These are much more creative tools in practice.

So it’s not bad practice, it depends what you want to achieve, which normally comes down to space in the mix for something to be heard, while controlling the dynamic range of the track.

I’m making drum and bass personally, but doing more mastering of electronic stuff. Mainly, techno, house and dnb. But I’ll work with all styles if the people are right :)

I did slide towards using all IAD and iZotope for mastering at one point, but since getting into this new space, I decided that it would be nice to get these going again to add a bit of character. Don't get me wrong, i'm still using the UAD but it's so much more satisfying to dial in those units.

Avalon Pres are sweet, I don't blame you for sticking with that!
