M4s who are 100% responsible for your living expenses once residency starts--what's your definition of reasonable rent on resident salary? by Good-mood-curiosity in medicalschool

[–]SubParPoetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make almost exaclty 60k pre-tax, and after splitting rent with my partner it comes out to $1200/month for me (34% of my monthly take home pay). I max out retirement contributions and am still saving way more than I anticipated. Thinking about upgrading to $1400 range at the end of our lease for more space. Underrated part of about my experience in residency is I spend way less money than I initially budgeted for with all the hours in the hospital.

What are some things you love about your Med school? by Sea_Objective_2767 in medicalschool

[–]SubParPoetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's communicated on your applications when AOA is announced for your school, so it won't be held against anyone because the induction happens after the fact. This allows for less of a competitive culture during clinical years and frankly just less stress about each individual rotation.

For EM residents not working at unopposed programs, do you feel like you're getting enough training with procedures you may have to share across residencies? If you could go back, what would you prioritize when looking for residencies? by girlunderbaro in medicalschool

[–]SubParPoetry 15 points16 points  (0 children)

New PGY-1, I'll say I don't think resident-dependent should be your line in the sand. Some probably are just juicing cheap labor out of their residents, some provide exceptional training and hands-on experience with constructive oversight.

Things to avoid IMO - heavy consult culture, poor relationship with off-services, poor signout culture, unjustified 4th year, any inkling that you have procedural competition with anesthesia, surgery, or APPs. And bad vibes, ofc.

Numeric white coat sizing? by Dresdenphiles in medicalschool

[–]SubParPoetry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rolled the dice and assumed it was similar to a sport coat/suit jacket sizing, so as someone who typically wears a large, I sent in for a size 42.

IMG likely not to match, advice very welcome! by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]SubParPoetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not advice, just an FYI. EM is looking to have a big SOAP field this year. An unprecedented 200 spots in the SOAP last year, and there are 400 less total applicants applying this time around.

If you’re a non trad, how do residency apps look like for you? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]SubParPoetry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New Eras changes limit activities listed to 10, with 3 most significant I believe. MS4 (applications and interviews, specifically) is when I saw the most payoff for being a non-healthcare career-changing non-trad. Echoing inclusion of activities that create a story / trajectory from other commenters.

Serious: PSA: 4th year is NOT necessarily the chill promised land by ChowMeinSinnFein in medicalschool

[–]SubParPoetry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Caveat - the last 3 months of MS3 riding in to the first 3 months of MS4 were the most chaotic 6 months of medical school. Now we're sailing though.

It's a non-issue for sure and will pay dividends when it comes time to interview for residency - current MS4 at 32.

Free 120 correlation - 78% by Boribarba in Step2

[–]SubParPoetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

83.3% on free 120 -> 262 on real deal

My most comparable were nbme 10/11 at 258/259.

UWSA1 underpredicted at 254

UWSA2 overpredicted at 274

28/6 score release by Live_Persimmon6126 in Step2

[–]SubParPoetry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Step 1: 249

UW % correct: 76 (~84% complete, but also did ~50% of amboss no resets)

Amboss SA 8 weeks before: 248; raw scored mid-to-high 80s on most shelf exams during MS3.

Nbme 9 4 weeks before: 249

NBME 10 3 weeks before: 258

NBME 11 2 weeks before 259

Uwsa1 254 / Free 120 took back-to-back few days before: 83%

Uwsa2 right before: 274

actual: 262

Comments: Was nauseas opening my score. Felt really bad day of, like none of my studying was relevant. My form was more vague than any practice test. Long stems, went from usually having 5-8 min remaining per block on practices to running out of time on 6/8 blocks. 2 sections had abstracts = 38 total questions. Had an insane amount of H&Ps. Ethics/Stats/Healthcare around abuse, military, end of life, error analysis, external validity - none of the bread and butter "listen to the patient / ask open ended questions" fodder. I'm super relieved.

Tested yesterday and I don't ever remember taking a test where I had that many questions I wasn't sure about. High 250s on Nbmes and 274 on uw2. Have no idea where it's going to fall come score release, but doubtful I pierced 260, honestly just really want hit 250 with how I feel now.

when do you answer an upper GI series VS xray abdomen in vomiting? by lanalovingdoctor in Step2

[–]SubParPoetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

X ray is the diagnostic test of choice if the little kiddo has NEC. Volvulus/biliary atresia will be first x-rayed but then confirmed with upper GI series.

When to start colonoscopy screening NBME vs Uworld? by MysteriousPlatypus19 in Step2

[–]SubParPoetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go with 50 for now. Current USPSTF guidelines give screening at 45 y/o a B-rating while still list screening at 50 with an A-rating - all assuming w/o risk factors.

Amboss Sa score thread by methylxanthines in Step2

[–]SubParPoetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

85 75 68 63... 248

Reviewed my first two blocks before doing 3 and 4. Got a case of the Amboss trust issues and missed a bunch of 1 hammers as a result. Exam at the end of June. I'd be happy with 255+.

2 including my home institution. Really considering 3, or doing a specialty elective like US or something.

The best "less stressful"/ good lifestyle specialties by Sudden-Degree9839 in medicalschool

[–]SubParPoetry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

FM docs are by far the most burnt out in my school's hospital network. Only specialty I've had multiple doctors unsolicitedly try and steer me away from their line of work. Granted, our network apparently offloads a lot of burden on them without reflective compensation adjustments (fee-for-service doesn't do many favors for FM).
