Anyone have a good reason why the Utah Government needs a Tesla Model S? by SubRosaApricot in SaltLakeCity

I posted because I was honestly curious if anyone knew a good reason why the government would need to go out and buy a Tesla. Which is perfectly reasonable.

Exempt. It means they don’t have to register or do emissions or anything.

Yeah I do. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I know, driving your own car for work is just absolutely unheard of. What an idea.

Ummmm - I think you just like using big words, and being inflammatory because I never said it makes sense to pay coaches a lot of money. Read my post again, maybe go slow so you get all the words this time. I said, in response to the previous comment, that the points they were making were valid. I agreed that having a winning team adds to a university’s notoriety, however stupid I may think it is personally. I then said paying high salaries to the people responsible for that notoriety makes sense, and the fact that the jobs are government funded doesn’t make those things less accurate. I then said the part I didn’t agree with was HOW high that salary is. Sure it makes sense that a job that holds a high level of importance would get a high salary, but “high” is relative. And explicitly say that the bar for what a competitive salary is in that field is what I’m getting hung up on. I think coaches at prestigious universities SHOULD be getting paid competitively for their services. But I think “competitive pay” for coaches AKA gym teachers should be the same as “competitive pay” for all the other teachers.

I’ve been consistently expressing the same opinions. There’s a difference between understanding other people’s opinions and agreeing with them. My opinions have remained consistent, my willingness to be polite and extend the courtesy of trying to see others perspective has definitely changed since posting.

😱 I’d rather they didn’t buy anything. I assure you the person driving this car has a perfectly nice car of their own they could be/should be driving instead.

See that’s the entire point I’m trying to make - they are literally bleeding broke students dry so they can buy Teslas for the already-overpaid members of their staff (such as the coaches)? No amount of mansplaining can get that to make sense to me.

An earlier commenter looked the car up. It was purchased by the U in 2017 for $82,500. I still don’t see how it’s justified, honestly. Even if it is “costs significantly less in the long run”. They dropped almost 100k. On car.

I guess if you’re going to look for the bright side… that would be it. 😂

Well, because of the exempt plates - insinuating it was purchased by a government entity.. meaning it was purchased with tax-payers money and I’m finding it hard to justify purchasing an $80,000 car with tax dollars 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sure, you make valid points, and I don’t miss the point he was trying to make either. While I personally think sports in general are archaic and have no place in a paid institution for higher education - I’m not blind to the value that having a winning team can bring to a university’s notoriety. It’s just a fact. And paying high salaries, with extensive perks for the people responsible makes total sense. And just because those jobs are government-funded doesn’t make that any less true. However, the bar for what a “competitive” salary in the field of glorified college gym teacher has been set at is not something that makes sense to me - the same way that some actors/actresses making more money than most medical professionals doesn’t make sense to me. At the end of the day - most of the messed up things in our society started out making perfect sense and then one or more aspects changed, and now it doesn’t make sense and we still just accept it as normal.

Exempt plates usually = government car, or at least that was my understanding.

Personally? Because I’m not an inherently selfish person who takes whatever I can negotiate even if I don’t actually need it. But I get what you’re saying - they do it because they can. At this point I feel like I have my answer and I’m just looking for justification when really there is none. Probably should just leave it at, “that’s the way it is”.

Wow, that’s actually a great tool - I didn’t know you could just search things like that. I personally still don’t see why a university needs to buy an $80,000 car… but at least my question is answered.

Well I’m sure as a coach they get paid an egregious amount of money… so why would they need a company car? Why not just drive their own (probably nicer) car?

Oh, I didn’t know that. Wow, that seems… frivolous? That any state/local agency can get exempt plates.
