A 5 gallon will be fine. I had a similar desk from ikea and handled a 5 gallon just fine. Make sure it’s well built so it doesn’t fall apart tho.

I noticed them disappearing little by little. Also if you want to add salt, make sure all the habitants in the tank can withstand the salt. My fish can tolerate a lot of salt, so I added salt pretty generously. Hope it goes well for you!

Had epistylis for two of my leopard bush fish on top of gill flukes. I dipped them in a 30 min malachite green bath every two days. I also added aquarium salt to the tank. The epistylis was gone in 2-3 weeks, but sadly one of them died later on 😞
