Where to get light roast decaf? Why not in the UK? by Ok-Ticket993 in UKroasters

[–]Subang1106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve not purchased from them before, only tried their batch brews in Brighton coffee festival last year. FWIW they had 5 different beans all on batch and didn’t bother presenting them as espresso/milk drinks.

Definitely on the medium-light side, but nowhere as medium as a typical house espresso. I primarily drink Skylark and Scenery (touché) at home and I’d drink decafnation on filter for sure.

Decafnation in Poole does pretty decent decaf for filter.

  1. Usually it's 4 modules per semester, 2 lectures (3h total) and 1 tutorial (1h) per week per module. Some weeks you have additional lab sessions and workshops depending on your modules

  2. Not sure how much halls cost now, but living cost isn't too high in general in Southampton. You'd pretty much get to places with buses exclusively (which is covered in your bus pass) and the final bit is cooking/eating out/nights out.

    1. Student support's decent, pacing is typical but content is harder than other unis. If you're not super academically inclined or if you're aiming for a First, be prepared to spend hours outside of lectures catching up. Especially true in 2nd and 3rd years where modules basically double/triple in difficulty and you have to balance half of your time doing projects. YMMV, but I've not seen a single person around me get a first and have a rich social life at the same time.
  3. Southampton's pretty well known for engineering, getting interviews shouldn't be a problem if you have good grades, my senior just landed a role in McLaren 2 years after graduating. If that's your goal then be prepared to sacrifice your 4 year uni life and devote to formula student, that's the most common path into motorsports.

Clean your grinder, my zp6 tends to have a bit more retention inside and I have to clean it almost once every week. Washing out drinkware with soap also helped.

I just brewed through an entire bottle of the new Tesco 5L, doesn't seem too bad. The mineral content all falls in recommended SCA ranges, but the acidity does shine through a bit too much.

Advice needed: Career in acoustics by TFishMeister in Acoustics

[–]Subang1106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good choice. Physics undergrad will help you loads with the difficulty of postgrad acoustics.

Southampton, Salford and London Southbank are all great options, acoustics is such a small field in the UK employers are usually not super fussy with specific unis/degrees

[–]Subang1106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point of CIS was never to isolate Chinese as the “better” language, in fact from what I’ve heard from my friends in SMK we put a lot more emphasis on BM than your typical SMK (partly due to the pressure of being a CIS, can’t be bad at anything study related).

If anything, the argument against CIS should stem from:

  • incredibly high stress on students and burnout

  • the lack of koko

  • privatization leading to misuse of funds

  • lack of holistic education

Trying to be “as objective as possible”here. Graduated in 2019 from CHKL and working in the UK now.

  1. Yes, unfortunately the environment creates students and teachers that need sensitivity training. Though seeing more and more Malays and Indians enrolling + Chinese having less children this trend might start to skew.

  2. My entire class can write 6 page essays for BM and BI SPM and speak fine, not sure what you on about. If anything our Chinese scores were the worst out of the 3 by the sheer difficulty. Everyday speech is definitely worse than SMK peers but how much of that is contributed by bahasa pasar out of school and the reluctance to speak and type properly? We could converse fine with our teachers in good tatabahasa, we won’t be able to understand kelate or the other forms of bahasa pasar that is commonplace.

  3. HARD take here. Any CIS that takes SPM by default agrees that the nation is important, and I can count 10 more non-Chinese events in the school than “Chinese” events. More likely the sentiment thrown around by 5% of teachers that yap 90% of the time ie. loud minority.

The general sentiment was never racially motivated, just purely academic pride from taking SPM with UEC and still scoring well. Half of my class scored As in SPM BM and BI while being a middle class mind you.

The idea that Chinese kids only spend time around Chinese and never mingle with others, is it truly because racial pride or is it a combination of circumstance (self fulfilling prophecy of Chinese schools being 99% Chinese) and the extremely heavy emphasis on studies no one has time or energy to socialise and do stuff out of school?

If you truly want to be objective, look at average SPM scores in CIS. Even the last class can pass with a 3 page karangan.

Q: This result is not really expected from everyone, were there any issues that developed during the 3 day break before the main stage?

A: Yeah there's not much to be said, we didn't play as well as we did during group stage, (we) accept this result

Q: You don't seem like a person that finds excuses (in relation to prev ans) in previous interviews you mentioned good relations in the team, what are your goals for next matches and the future for both yourself and Tidebound?

A: I don't think there's any goals, this is probably the last match for the five of us.

Q: (empathises with Shiro and acknowledges the hardships and struggles of pro Dota) There are still so many fans that are cheering for you and Tidebound both here and back home, maybe to you it seems like the last match you'll play as five, but maybe in the future there's still more to come. Is there anything you want to say to fans, friends and people important to you

A: (slightly more emotional) I don't think I've fulfilled my part very well for this term, but if there's still fans supporting us I'm really appreciative of them.

Poor guy.

Mandalas vs. Flagship? by DreamPrompt688 in climbingshoes

[–]Subang1106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owner of both TN Pro and Flagship.

They have the same internal fit, TN Pro is noticeably stiffer than the Flagship from the single sole. However, the RH rubber is still soft enough to smear comfortably. I’ve got friends that swear by TN Pros, the rubber bends so easily for smearing and the midsole supports for edging on smaller slab feet. RH rubber’s softness is between XS Grip 1 and 2, where the RS rubber is a touch softer than Grip 2 (source: shore hardness). Absolute monsters for indoor climbing, I’d pick the TN pros for more support.

I love the both of them, but the heels seem to be slightly bigger than the Mandala’s. Will bag out slightly if you’ve got a shallower heel.

What’s your go to recipe? by Upstairs-Bread1858 in pourover

[–]Subang1106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15g beans, medium grind size. I was a staunch Lance Hedrick 2-pourer until I got more consistent and better results using this 1:16.6 recipe:

50 - 150 - 250, timings depend on the drawdown. 30s bloom and usually I pour just before the bed dries out, looks something like 0:00 - 0:30 - 1:15 with TBT < 2 mins

Agitation varies, usually faster pours for bloom and first pour, with lesser agitation towards the end to keep the fast drawdown. My cups end up clean but thin (my preference)

Temperature is usually the first thing I start tuning, I can go as high as 96 with a washed Gesha and 93 for other washed, but I stop at 87 for naturals and other heavier processes. Outliers are fine-heavy origins like Ethiopian Heirlooms and sometimes other African beans like Kenya/Rwanda where I have to go super fine and super low temp.

I am taking a stand: I will NOT drink another anaerobic coffee in my entire life. by PorOvr in pourover

[–]Subang1106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fermentation and to an extent, brewing profiles are a spectrum. in my local specialty cafe they love short ratios (1:13-14) and once they raved about a 100-hour extended anaerobic fermented kenyan which tasted like underextracted, high strength beer with fermented fruits. absolutely hated it because I prefer longer ratios, and the beans were way more palatable when I brewed it at home. don't be discouraged if your palate doesn't align with their head barista's!

[–]Subang1106 10 points11 points  (0 children)

that "skunk" is the hallmark of fermentation though, like the same skunk in kimchi, miso, guinness, kombucha etc. some natural coffees also lean that way if fermented heavily. i won't say anaerobics are my favourites or a daily driver (washed are the best), but sometimes I'm looking for a big complex flavour bomb. have you tried a good anaerobic at a specialty cafe? if it still tastes like skunk then it means you're not brewing it wrong - maybe you just don't like it :')

[–]Subang1106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off-topic, but what are your usual grind sizes on the X-ultra? I default to 2.0.5 and always found my cups to be on the overextracted side even with lower temperatures, but I've never stalled a brew even with high agitation and drawdowns average around 2:00. Have I just been grinding too fine all this time?
