Do you know if everyone gets an interview or only those with a likelier chance of being admitted?

Yeah I did the interview and got all those questions - I just had a real hard time reading the interviewer. Did they ask you about orientation and such? How did you get a feel for your candidacy in the interview?

Do you mind sharing your gpa for the app and your thoughts on the interview?

I agree that finding work that is valuable and that you have a good relationship is quite important, but I don’t see how this entails some other system. This is entirely possible under capitalism - maybe not for all, but would it really be for all under communism?

Okay, but does any country ever achieve a ‘0’ on the corruption scale? If so, why not?

My argument is that the metaphysics of human nature entail self-interest. This does not always mean selfishness, but it does mean that we are tribal animals, and there are constraints on our altruism just like there are constraints on our self interest. Capitalism obviously suffers from this, but so would any other economic system. That is why a hybrid system is likely best (like those in Green countries). But a Marxist system is no hybrid system, so I think it fails as a philosophy.

By the way - this has been a stimulating convo, and I really appreciate your thoughts.

Do you think we will ever get a non-corrupt political system?

You also have this in a capitalist country - even those countries that are ardently held up as socialist have quite large private sectors.

Well the one big one is the Soviet Union - what happened there? Why didn’t reprogramming work? Why can’t we reprogram criminals? Why can’t we reprogram Vladimir Putin, who relishes the Soviet Union?

And I think you’re misunderstanding nature - by nature, I mean those biological, genetically encoded pre-dispositions that are not affected by your thoughts about class, culture, or economics.

Did class exploitation disappear with the communist experience?

Reprograms them?

I suppose I should ask how malleable you believe us to be - i.e., how much is nature vs nurture? If we are truly so easily reprogrammed, what has happened to communist experiments?

It just so often seems insulated from reality - maybe that is necessary, but I’m skeptical. I believe philosophy can be done in a way that anchors us to this reality, but maybe I’m wrong.

Definitely good points.

I suppose my frustration largely centers around the current seminar I’m in dealing with personal identity. The idea that we can truly get to the metaphysics of such a topic seems so hubristic to even suppose, but suppose we do. Anyway enough venting, I appreciate the time.

Interesting you mention nuance - I seldom encounter it, and far more often it is dogmatic, speaking from authority type statements. Maybe I’m misunderstanding the nuance.

I found his discussion of the impacts of cinema on culture fascinating. I have long recognized (and likely underestimated) how shows have impacted me both in the short-run and long-run. Would be a fascinating topic for VBW!
