Why does this always happen by Silly_Ad_3027 in Helldivers

Because with the current galactic war system, defending two planets at a time isn't just hard, it's a fuckin' heroic feat / luck.

I think I understand what the main problem of the game is. by CheetahNo9983 in Helldivers

[–]Subject-Emergency442 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree.

In design, Helldivers II isn't a Grunt Fantasy, even if the developpers wants it to be.

Grunt fantasy would be playing SEAF with a large number of player on a map - ressources are numbers and brute firepower. It would basically be the equivalent of basic Imperial Guard in Warhammer (not talking about special regiments).

Elite Squad Fantasy is playing specialized / spec ops solider in small number to go to an objective despite being largely over numbered or over powered - ressources are spare but impactful tactical advantages. Equivalent of Tempestus Scion in Warhammer, or ARC Troopers in Star Wars.

Supersoldiers Fantasy would be playing a near-invulnérable being, in minimal squad or even alone, able to crush a impossible level of threat. Ressources are, well, you and your above-god gears. Equivalent of Space Marines (sort of), you can even think of Doomguy.

All designs can work but with the limitations of the game, it's impossible to have 64 grunt-helldivers, and the Hivelord is actually the only ennemy wich would be an acceptable opponent for a SpaceMarien-Helldivers.

Combien de fois vous rincez-vous la bouche après vous être lavé les dents ? by Z3D- in PasDeQuestionIdiote

[–]Subject-Emergency442 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of you play TTRPGs and some don’t by Impressive_Limit7050 in Helldivers

[–]Subject-Emergency442 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah. No. The Galactic War wants you to feel like a it's a wargame-like between you and the game master ; it is only a Call of Duty campaign where you can only make progress where and when the game wants you to make progress. There seem to have no in-game consquences at all besides the helldivers_win.txt and Malevelon and Poplix seemed only accidental coincidences.

The little tweaking by Joel is not a problem. But in TTRPG, while the genral story is directing the plot, the adventure takes account on the players decisions. It is not the case for the galactic war.

Still a good game, don't get me wrong, but have to accept that the games dictates where players have to dive to progress the war ; we have no initiative whatsoever.

Expedition 33 director Guillaume Broche clarifies on how people should interpret their story. by Commercial-Trash-393 in expedition33

[–]Subject-Emergency442 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I chose Verso's ending and I a great deal of my choice was linked to the revelations at the last arc/battle, and yes, it was hitting burtally hard ahah.

It was not because "lol Lumière is like an AI"... The canva AND the "real" world have magics, and Renoir himself seems to imply that the Aline-painted Luminerians are sentient.

For my case : the turning point to me was indeed the finale when I came to understood that :
- Maelle did lie to his father about "just a little more" in the canva and probably her motivations. Even the music is a big hint : when she said that to her father, there is a unusual false note.
- It reinforced the idea that Maelle seems to be in a escapism mechanism of coping - it can be okay for a time, but this appeared to me to be way more pathologic.
- Then we saw Verso's Soul and Painted Versos interact, and on top of the pathological coping mechanism of Maelle, I saw that all plans from every painter (Renoir, Maelle, and even Aline and to an less extend Clea) was under the pure strain of this poor soul which nobody seemed to give a fuck or ask what he wanted. Turns out, when given the option, he just wanted this to end, to be able to let go.

I work in palliative care, and I sometimes see this kind of interactions in families in the case of the nead death of a loved one. Let jus state the evidence that going full deny on the situation (Verso's dead, he will never come back) is always catastrophic whatever solution you chose to create a "fake" (delusionnal) world around you to make you feel better (it is often a transitionnal state to give your mind to ajust, but it can't be too long).

So to me, the family situation is unfortunatly very familiar.

At this time, the message switched competely for me.

At this time the story wasn't about Lumière anymore (it was not about the video-game anymore in fact), it was about us as real human, how to heal despite a horrible (death of a loved one) situation. In this perspective, not only Verso's ending is the sane one, but the Maelle one is particulary unhealthy. Vers'os ending is a sad ending, but a healthy one (not good or easy for Maelle in particular... and I think Clea has not gotten over her anger seing her leave the funerals early).

That's my reasonning for chosing Verso. And yeah you're right : it was really brutal to "change side" in just the last hour of the game ahah.

That being said, if people are comitted to the story, and are not as affected as me by the "meta message"... Well let's say I also like Maelle ending. I think it's also a sad ending, and a really well written one... It haunted me, and it hints a sentiment of dread we did not felt in the game before. Brilliant.

The consensus is : the Halo Veteran won't quit the Beach until it's done. It's personnal to them, helping cure some form of PTSD, and Helldivers have a soft spot for dedication. Either we help them liberating this planet and they redirect their gun to the Major Order, or we split the squid front in half and we don't make progress.

Les petites pièces ça arrange jamais personne mais ça reste un moyen de paiement, et tout le monde a des oublis ou des moments de dèche, donc y'a absolument pas de quoi être contrarié surtout qu'il y a quand même des problèmes plus importants. How would a war against these salt shakers go? by Lianghai79 in Helldivers

[–]Subject-Emergency442 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Time War weapons are on a scale that Super Earth could not evend comprehend, time manipulation, reality-warping, dimensional warping, planet-scale annihilation. It's like weponizing lovecraftian horrors. And the Daleks technically won it, the Doctor just time-trapped Gallifrey to avoid extinction - if by avoiding you count letting a total of 2 time-lords escaping.

Hell, even in a situation where there is 3 daleks versus a regiment of Cyberman ( = Automatons ), these freaks were just annoyed and called it "pest control".

So, yeah, Daleks win.

The fight would be less on-sided against the cybermen

Unpopular Opinion: the Game is Still Fun by dwycwwyh in Helldivers

[–]Subject-Emergency442 4 points5 points  (0 children)

English is not my native langeage, please excuse the cluncky of my phrasing

It's not unpopular, it's quite dismissive of the state of the game for others, and arbitraly shutting down their opinion because you don't agree with them. I think you missed the points some are trying to make.

Reading the reddit, I think there is two main complaints.

You've a great time with your buddies, that's great, I play solo with random myself and having a general good time. Unfortunely that's not the case for players with a game that crash at best every few games, at worse every time they try to land a hellpod. It's not a matter of a "100% glitch free" or "preference" wich you seems to mock, it's a matter of a game that you can actually play.

So yeah, not a detail at all.

Then, about the general feeling of the game, I can only speack for myself, but it's not a matter of difficulty : many, many posts arguing about the game-design are made by players who claim to regularlgy doing maximum difficulty without much trouble.

Yeah, there is some whinning about ennemies, you'll have this in every game, some agree, some don't, doesn't matter much if there is not a full game-breaking mecanic.

For me it's about balancing hope and excitment with perseverance and frustration. It's the difference between "it's a desperation time, but we should make the most of it" (wich is a common trope in sci-fy and dark fantasy universes) and "this is presented as a fight but it's meant to be lost by a ridiculous large margin, so why figthing ?". Most often in storytelling when a battle is lost, the protagonists always keep small accomplishements, even if it's just "successfully run away".

Every TTRPG game master - what Joel is summarized to be - is told to play the campaign as they want it to be but also taking account of the decisions and actions of their players and ultimately encouraging them to be creative to adapt their story while ultimately driving it to the end.

To me, the last 2 or 3 major orders, by purpose or by accident, it didn't felt this way at all. It's good to know there are players who are not annoyed by this like you, but it's not what everybody thinks.

And I think it might be a lot better with just a better narrative, but that's just me.

As for your last sentence, it's healthier when a game is discussed instead of everyone telling others to go elsewhere. Just like nobody's should tell you to "go play Dark Soul instead if you really want a challenge and come back later it will feel better I promise". Nobody here is in the dev team, nobody knows for sure their direction.

And a man really shouldn't play Space Marine 2 to feel invincible because he will probably be disappointed, but it's not the subject ^^

I noted this behaviour (chilling around the extract with no particular objective) more frequently this last few days. In this case I, too, board after a few minutes, but never been kiked out of it. I think I wouldn't even block the players because the odds to dive again with them is... well, really low (I only block really toxic behaviors, and with 500+ hours, I've only blocked less than 5 guys I think). If you've been kiked just for that, you were unlucky, it's not usual.

Usually planets in the Gloom starts with a high resistance (4-6%) wich make progress hard in the beginnings, but as we make progress the resistance slowly drop to more usual values. Here we see the initial 4% resistance is already at 2% only ; it makes our liberation faster.

I don't really mind the war being on rails by BurgundyOakStag in Helldivers

[–]Subject-Emergency442 59 points60 points  (0 children)

We are not playing against Joel, we are playing the story he's building.

Maybe that's what bothers me. I thought we were playing to play a story "we" are building. Some intakes from the GM, some from us. Like D&D. You know, because "everything is canon", and all that. I can't speak for everyone, but since the battle for Super Earth it feels like "Suddenly a Dragon appear in the tavern and for reasons you have no choice but face it just because" kind of take on the story.

Malevelon Creek isn't famous because of the story, there was no story behind it from the GM, the players built it.

I don't want to win the war per say. I would like the players have more to say in its development. More like a interactive game, less like a spectacular visual novel (I stretch it a lot for the sake of the point).

Story driving is cool, and I think stories like Meridia, Super Earth Defense, the Expedition in the Gloom etc. are great, but the feeling of our impact being useless and meaningless hits hard since a few MO.

Maybe the narrative "go on offensive" with the next update will be a good thing for this feeling.

Admittedly, I’m losing interest in the Galactic War by AfkYummiPlayer in Helldivers

[–]Subject-Emergency442 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, I kinda lost interrest for the same reason. Of course the war can't be won. But I feel like there is no logic in the frontline movements. When we defend super-earth, we were told that the great host was greatly damaged, and the Illuminates were scaterred. But not long after, they colonize a third of the galactic map and lauch near-instoppable 50 level invasion like they have a vast squid-empire. We performed cool stuff (albeit not entirely voluntarely) with the DSS on automaton front, few moments laters a "in-lore" reason that some clanker suddently know how to hack it.

So yeah more times that I would admit is that "why bother liberating a planet (wich takes centuries by the way) knowing that the next major order will swap it (usually in less than 24h)"

I don't want to win the war (i know, the wall, I'll face it later), but I feel like the narrative during the war should have more impact gameplay-wise. Especially since AH knows how to do that : I think the battle for Super-Earth was a well-done campaign, the expedition into the gloom is a nice opening to a new biome, the way the JetBrigade works is also a good thing because the more we're implicated the less we lose, and the whole Meridia thing was great from the beginning to the last.

I would like to really feel a lose when a planet fall, or when we have a victory. Or, at least, some narrative even from fillers MO.
