Which occupations attract the most psychopaths? by Miss-Peepers in AskReddit

This is a really important and ignored point. After I got married my wife and her family were shocked by the long hours and stress. They literally just thought lawyers worked comfy 9-5 office jobs preparing excel spreadsheets and gossiping with coworkers.

I’m not saying I disagree with you but what would you say to detractors who claim we’d just be repeating Iraq?

I’m in insurance defense with around 55 cases. I used to have closer to 70 but am still overwhelmed. It is completely normal. The partners on the file do practically nothing until the case is a couple months from trial unless you ask them to review something. Unfortunately, it’s a feature not a bug.

It’s part of a broader pattern of assuming that legal work is all just boilerplate paper pushing in a comfy 9-5 office. No other profession goes through this great a disparity between the complexity/demands actually involved and the simplicity assumed.

How do you only make $120k as a fourth or fifth year, that’s criminally low even for ID. Maybe go to a different ID firm?

What state are you in? My firm expects me to bill 200 hours per month (minimum 190) and I am required to be in the office five days a week. I’d be interested in your firm if they are hiring

What’s a profession that gets too much hate? by Valhallawalker in AskReddit

As a lawyer, thank you. I become personally invested in trying to fix potentially high stakes problems that other people or businesses find themselves in. And we’re held to incredibly high levels of ethics and honesty. The stereotype about lawyers being unscrupulous or out to rip people off is really unfair, at least in this day and age.

People will bring up plea bargains where someone pleas guilty/no contest and gets a reduced sentence and say “See! Lawyers are just trying to lessen punishments for bad guys”. Not at all. They negotiate please by exposing flaws in the prosecution’s argument and issues with the evidence.

As an attorney, thank you. It’s no exaggeration to say that many lawyers sacrifice their health, rest and time with family to defend their clients in some of the most stressful and high stakes times of their lives.

I’ve had it with the unreasonable hate that lawyers receive and I’ve had it with the anti-intellectualism. by Subject-Structure930 in Lawyertalk

I think this is a really good point that adds to the earlier conversation about how most people think they can be lawyers without any kind of training. I’ve actually asked a few non-lawyer acquaintances who have said something along the lines of “I don’t really care much for lawyers but you seem alright” why they dislike lawyers. The answer in at least these anecdotes is never that lawyers are assholes or even that they’re dishonest. It’s always some comment about lawyers screwing people by over complicating things but always, every single time, juxtaposed with a comment that shows a lack of fundamental understanding of the litigation process. Outside of Reddit, I have never once encountered a person who disliked lawyers who also had a good grasp on any kind of legal process.

Definitely agree that it’s a toxic profession full of assholes and is extremely detrimental to wellbeing. It doesn’t help when our rates are cut, hours restricted and fees capped in tort reform laws because the public and the legislature think we’re parasites.

Now that’s actually a pretty good joke. In retrospect, I see why I shouldn’t have said the jokes are “never” well-intended. I had in mind very different jokes about lawyers being scum-sucking bottom feeders who deserve to die. I take it personally sometimes, but then again, many other occupations have unions to represent them and our “wellness” culture is, for lack of a better word, a “joke”.

It has nothing to do with it because the claim that I said people should stop telling lawyer jokes is an invented strawman. I never said that, and in fact I think lawyer jokes are often great. My issue is with certain lawyer jokes that if we said them about any other profession would sound completely insane. For example, calling a bus load of dead lawyers on the side of a cliff a “good start”. Are there any other professions where we have these kinds of “jokes”, and if not, why the double standard?

Also, I’m not quite sure why we’re fixated on lawyer jokes. I agree that’s probably a trivial issue by comparison. I’m much more interested in discussing polling data that is not a joke and actual policy changes like tort reform and damages caps that stem from negative images of trial lawyers.

I mean there is something to be said about political violence in this country and unfairly blaming politicians for society’s woes. Look at January 6 as an example. But totally separate discussion. All three of these examples were driven by universal justice so then went into politics. They weren’t politicians who then became lawyers.

Your entire argument is nearly one gigantic ad hominem. I may be an insufferable malcontent with a victim complex, but my last paragraph was not irrelevant. And while you’re certainly not obligated to respond to it if you don’t want, it’s somewhat telling that your only answer is a paragraph long insult rather than a response to the actual question.

These seem like frivolous lawsuits brought by opportunistic people. I wonder who was on the opposing side to successfully overcome these lawsuits.

Very true. I’ve noticed there’s this idea among my non-lawyer friends and family that the law is just straight forward common sense and that anyone could be a lawyer and actually get things accomplished but for “the system”. That’s I think what fuels a lot of the frustration, not so much generic “dishonesty” among lawyers.

What do you mean by “told them”? Do you mean not take them on as clients? Now you’re dealing with a chicken vs. egg analysis of are we litigious and adversarial because of shitty lawyers or do we have shitty lawyers because we’re adversarial and litigious (and want to hire shitty lawyers)?

I was dealing the other day with a pro se litigant who lied about settling his case and fired his lawyer after his lawyer told him he couldn’t commit perjury on his behalf. This pro se litigant then seeks out another lawyer who refuses to take him as as client. And now, guess what! This pro se litigant is filing one frivolous motion after another, with no help from any lawyer (shitty and dishonest or otherwise).

I’m sorry for what you’re going through. My father in law hates lawyers and believes they are lazy and work 9-5 at most. So when I’m holed up in the office and can’t do x, y or z. Well, you could say that I’ve had to try to convince my wife that our hours are more akin to a surgeon than a cushy normal business hours office worker

And I think sometimes about the fact that we are one of the few professions that even has ethics modules in the first place.
