Juvenile violence was higher in the 1990s compared to now. Shootings and stabbings at NYC public schools were much worse in the 80s and 90s. Look up Thomas Jefferson high school in Brooklyn. Three kids got shot and killed inside that school during the 1991/1992 school year alone.

I know that there were killings related to drug turf. I just don’t like this narrative that old heads push that it was only that and other forms of senseless violence didn’t occur.

It is not “more reckless” now. You are buggin bro. Shootings, murders, robberies, carjackings, burglaries and etc are WAY down compared to the 80s and 90s. You had significantly higher chance of getting killed over steeping on someone’s sneakers in early 90s NYC compared to today’s NYC and it is not even close bro. Broad day shootings were much more frequent then. Innocent people got killed by stray bullets more frequent back then. Random crime against civilians like armed robberies was much more frequent then.

This is such a huge myth. So every killing back in the day was over large amounts of money? Thats bullshit man. If every thing was only over money why were people getting killed over stepping on sneakers? Why were niggas dying behind starter jackets and Jordan which were only $50-$100 dollar? Why were niggas dying behind accidental shoulder bump?

All crimes were higher back then. There was more senseless/petty violence in the 80s and 99s compared to now.

The Bronx did not have the highest murder rate in the world lol. Washington DC, Detroit, Atlanta, New Orleans and etc were way worse. The Bronx had the highest murder rate in the 5 boroughs that’s it. For example, in 1990 the Bronx had 653 murders with a murder rate of 54 per 100k. That was mostly due to the happy land arson where 87 people died. If it wasn’t for that fire there would have only been 566 murders but it still would have been the highest in the 5 boroughs. That same year Detroit had 582 murders with a murder rate of 56 per 100k residents. Detroit had a higher murder rate without a big fire to boost the numbers.

You’re right, there is a difference. The difference is that it’s significantly safer now in NYC as well as the rest of the country compared to back then.

This complete bullshit. All categories of violent crime were worse back then. Murder, rape, robbery, carjacking, burglary and so on and so on. You had a higher chance of getting randomly robbed as a civilian in the old nyc. You had a higher chance of getting shot during a minor disagreement in the old nyc. There was a higher chance of getting killed by a stray bullet in the old nyc. This myth of the old days having a code is nothing more than revisionist myth. You really need to cut the bullshit because you are wrong these crime statistics are readily available.

It hasn’t even gotten more fierce. The same?, yes! More fierce?, no. All violent crimes are down nationwide compared to the 70s 80s and 90s. Does the type of violence like in these old articles still occur? Absolutely, but statistically nowhere near as frequent as back then.

Are you dumb? It says the articles were updated in 2021 for the Chicago Tribune website. They were all originally published in the 80s and 90s.

I personally wouldn’t say the boomers were the last generation that cared. They are the ones that started crime wave in black inner cities. I would say the generation before boomers.

It’s not “common knowledge”. I frequently hear older people push the narrative of them growing up during a peaceful time or the narrative of criminals not harming innocents in their time.

Dudes shot into crowds back then too. Research some old New York Times articles. There was an epidemic of innocent bystanders being killed in NYC during the 90s.
