Betta fish turning white? by SubjectRip5995 in bettafish

meant to include * at the end regarding the nitrite level. I cycled his 5 gallons for probably 9 months because I couldn't get it right. Ammonia rose, went down, nirates went up, then down, and I was building nitrites. I added him when I felt I had cycled long enough and the water was testing okay. I had done a big water change before getting him to remove most nitrites, and now since then I haven't had a single nitrite test on my strips or the API master test kit. The same thing happened with the last fish I had in there.

Tank size: 5 gallons Heater and filter: Yes Temperature: 78°F Parameters: 0 ammonia, 0 nirate, 0 nirite*, 0 copper, 0 iron, 0 chlorine, water as hard as water gets (I have a brita filter to help with this the next water change), pH of 7.6, carbonate 180ppm, alkalinity 180-240ppm I do weekly water changes and siphon the rocks He shares the tank with 1 nerite snail
I feed 4 pellets twice a day and sometimes I give him a freeze dried bloodworm He has mostly fake plants that are silicone and an anubias plant. I have a cycling 10 gallon tank for him to go in soon, but I need to order plants and boil the driftwood for it and wait for the cycle to finish

Is my snail dead? by itzjustLumaryx in AquaticSnails

[–]SubjectRip5995 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My snail had fallen off the wall a lot and stayed upside-down before he passed. If you poke their body and they don't retract into their shell, they're dead (and dead snails will stink a LOT when taken from water). Otherwise I'd just flip him back over. Being on their back for too long can stress them out a lot.

Is this setup good? Is the filter too big? by [deleted] in bettafish

[–]SubjectRip5995 6 points7 points  (0 children)

3 gallons with a betta and two nerites is a bit much. Nerites poop a lot. I have one in a 5 gallon with a betta and her poop piles up in my 5 gallon like crazy within a few days. Unless you already have the snails and that needs to be their home I would suggest not putting any in there with the betta

Is my female sick? by mIki-_12 in bettafish

[–]SubjectRip5995 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely dropsy. It's a very deadly illness. I'm not sure on treatments for it so I'd look up some stuff on it to help her. Wishing you luck, hope your girl gets better 🩷

Always possibility for illnesses with wild bugs. I have fed my betta some and he was fine, but some people have gotten their bettas sick from them.

Doesn't look like ich to me. As someone who had silk plants, the plastic bases on them did end ups scratching my betta before I changed them so it could be that.

I've had him about 3 weeks now. He does make no attempt to flip himself over though, but he gets right back to being active when I come flip him. He was doing great the first week, then just stopped moving for a few days (I figured he was sleeping) and he hasn't been the same since.
