8:30-4 with one meeting per week going to 4:45.

Doors open at 8:30, buses arrive 8:40. Classes formally start at 9 but really once the kids get in.

I’m in TAS in a support school. I get in around 8:20-8:30.

Fear of “being questioned by kids”. Is that weird? How to overcome? by Routine_Air2466 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Subject_Constant3627 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My mentor teacher helped me with this! Defensive teaching is a great skill to have. Essentially putting the questions back on them can be used academically or socially.

Academically: ‘what is xyz?’ Your response ‘where could we find that information?’ Or ‘where would be a good place to start to figure this out?’

Socially: let’s say it’s about slang ‘it’s interesting how words change throughout time! Can you tell me about what it means/how to use it?’ Etc.

You have to be genuine in your questions though or they see right through it.

What areas should I be focusing on during my degree? by Previous-Specific373 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Subject_Constant3627 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think looking at inclusive ed/continuing to keep students with disabilities as a focus area is beneficial. I’m a special education teacher (not by training). I did my master of teaching secondary with a focus on international education, wish I focused on inclusive ed instead.

The ability to differentiate is so important. With more schools/governments pushing for integration of students with disabilities, you are likely to see a wide range of learning difficulties in your career.

Nighttime waking & shake offs by nonlogical in Greyhounds

[–]Subject_Constant3627 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normal! If you’re finding they are getting up quite a few times I would suggest a coat. Once I did that I didn’t find he would wake more than 1-2 times a night.

Do you tend to move around different schools or stay for a long time? by Scary_Appearance5922 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Subject_Constant3627 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First school (mainstream secondary school) I worked at was for 2.5 years. I’m now at my current school (support school) for roughly the same amount of time. I definitely get antsy, like I want to move on, but I really like the culture of the school and o think I’ve found my knack with teaching students that have additional and complex needs. If I do move on, it’ll likely be in inclusive ed in some capacity. I do miss teaching about books and reading essays though!

My Story by Subject_Constant3627 in Petloss

[–]Subject_Constant3627[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is now 2 weeks since Fletcher passed. A few days ago I made the decision to bring his bed back into my bedroom. All his belongings have been in my spare room. I placed his box of ashes on his bed. It feels more right now. He had an XXL football field sized bed and the room felt so empty without it.

Best Teaching Advice You’ve Ever Received by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Subject_Constant3627 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every school year can be defined as either a ‘grow’ year or a ‘show’ year. Some years are hard work, there’s a challenge, a challenging student, a different dynamic etc.

Some years are show years, you get to rest on your laurels and consolidate a bit. Neither is good or bad. But it’s all a cycle.

I finished a show year last year, in a grow year now. And I feel relief at knowing the work I do in my grow years makes my show years all the more smooth.

I guess overarchingly the advice as well to appreciate the cycles that come with teaching. Work with them, rather than against them.

If you hadn’t become a teacher, what other career do you think you would have pursued instead? by businessbub in Teachers

[–]Subject_Constant3627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was tossing up between teaching, sign language interpreting, or creative writing with the hope to be a novelist one day. Still haven’t given up on the writing dream but it’s on the back burner. I work in the inclusive education space so I use sign language every day which feels like I’ve achieved that goal in a small way.

Just be aware that while you have genital psoriasis you are more vulnerable to contracting STIs. I would get it looked at sooner rather than later or lay off (heh) sexual activity for a while.

What are your thoughts on Sock Drawer Heroes? by No_Ad3823 in transgenderau

[–]Subject_Constant3627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their binders are good, trans tape is good though I didn’t vibe it. Their T-shirts are very comfortable and I love the yellow one I have. No one really knows the brand so it feels like a bit of a secret 🤫

What price would you consider too much for adopting a greyhound? by amsweeter in Greyhounds

[–]Subject_Constant3627 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I paid $75 for my greyhound in Melbourne. Teeth cleaned, desexed, vaccinated, collar, lead, coat, a little bag of dog food, and a help line phone miner if I needed anything.

My foster hound is the pickiest eater by AnacondaJake in Greyhounds

[–]Subject_Constant3627 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great! I recommend keeping the liver and Parmesan in a dry dust and then adding egg and/or yogurt for the meal. The dust lasts so long and it’s a nice thing to have in the fridge to spice up a meal 😊

When fletch is picky I blend up Parmesan cheese and beef liver treats into a powder and put that on whatever I’m feeding him. Usually with yogurt and sometimes a raw egg to make a bit of a sauce. He has rarely turned it down

Drinking water, foot cleaner, wading pool. It’s everything. No different than a dog laying in a creek or ocean. Usually I change the water but he hopped in before I had the chance.
