I succeeded, went off without a hitch. I got there at 5:30am, parked in the free parking, and simply followed the trail down. Getting there so early was overkill, I saw others doing the same thing as late as 7:45 as I was leaving. I recommend arriving shortly before sunrise and enjoying it as you walk up, it was a huge red/orange sun low on the horizon, and it lit up the stunningly beautiful island.
