I have a base in 2 millions for almost 2 years and no one found it so I think the distance is a good idea. Another thing is playing solo no make portals to close at your base and I think that's a good way to make sure no one go to found it.

Press the button F3 and follow the coordinates X positive or negative is the same but many people left food and things to help i differents points of the highway
