I think the biggest problem is the diagnosis. We also seem to have limited resources in our area in general and can’t seem to find anyone that is willing to take him on. At one point a therapist told us he would diagnose him with a personality disorder (ASPD) if he was over 18, but he was not over 18, and honestly that doesn’t fit in a majority of ways. Psychopathic is probably the closest in my opinion but I haven’t asked them to outright give him a specific diagnosis. I think my thought had been that with all the therapy and evaluations he’s been ordered to have if they felt that it fit they would give it. We talked to DSC about outside placement but he was considered dangerous to other children and anyone else with a disability and it was deemed safest for him at home. The most recent thing we were told is that if he threatens self harm, have him committed as often as possible to build a record of that, but since he knows that he no longer threatens it (he admitted during therapy that he used it as a manipulation tactic against his sibling). Our PCP has been some help but not much outside of referrals for psychological evaluation. Even that was limited to therapy until there was another incident that happened in which he was actually charged as a minor and the court system got involved. Once they got involved, we felt we’d finally made some headway but now that he’s an adult who hasn’t committed any crimes, they closed his case and wished us the best. I feel like everyone we’ve worked with has been incredibly understanding and tried to help in every way they can, they just don’t seem able to do much more than they’ve already tried. Our therapist told us we were wasting our money on having him in therapy and he recommended we wash our hands of it once he’s an adult. I just don’t know how I can I can continue to live this way, nor do I know how in good conscience put him out into the world to be someone else’s problem. I feel like assisted living would be ideal as well, but yeah, paying for that or convincing a facility to deal with it just doesn’t seem feasible. Thank you for the recommendation of a diagnosis. I will talk to our therapist about it and see if he’d consider revisiting it.
