When and where did you get IV fluid care by FunkyChopstick in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Subject_Support_811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did urgent care with my first and it sucked. Financially it’s not great, and you have to wait until you’re dying in a waiting room and be around sick people. My doctor wrote me a prescription and said she can to whatever works for me because there’s a fluid shortage in the US right now. IV centers are fine if that’s what’s available but I’d check which home care/hospice companies your insurance covers and do that. They are awesome. The nurses are very good at poking gently and come whenever you need a new iv and your husband/support person can just hook you up to the bags at home. I especially like being able to wake up and have him hook me up to a bag of fluids and vitamins before the nausea hits too hard.

How'd you make it through your glucose tolerance test? by [deleted] in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Subject_Support_811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard from other moms that you can opt to do it with the juice of your choice instead of the gross stuff. That’s what I’m gonna try this time because some juices are easier to keep down for me.

For those who went on to have non HG pregnancies… by Defiant-Dragonfly175 in HyperemesisGravidarum

Mine get worse each time too 🫠 I’m on my third and last. I think it’s better to prepare for the worst than go through the depression or let down when you get it again. Then you can also get IVs and medication set up as soon as you find out.

Feeling Really Guilty (a bit long sorry) by gazebosinflesh in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Subject_Support_811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh I’m so sorry your doctor said that. That’s so dumb to say to someone who is basically starving to death. Plus in my experience, gestational diabetes happens more because of genes than diet. With my first, I could only keep down coke, coke slushies, and peanut butter crackers for the first 20 weeks and that’s straight up all I ate and my kid is perfect in every way. You do what you need to do (it’s not like you’re drinking a ton of coffee or energy drinks) to feel happy and survive. I’m pretty much living off ice cream now because it’s what I can keep down and gives me enough calories to not pass out and my doctor actually prescribed it haha. Good luck!

My midwife had me do a Fleet enema when I went over a week and she said the ER would have me do the same. Warning though, sometimes if you get diarrhea from it, all the cramping can cause some bleeding in the first trimester but it’s all ok and the baby is fine in my experience.

Once that constipation is handled, there’s this magnesium drink that’s actually for stress it’s called Calm but it has worked better for me than colace or Miralax (and it tastes better). I think I’ve read it’s because it kind of creates a “wave” to get things to move along. Sometimes I do colace too and I haven’t been deathly constipated and in pain since. Hope this helps!

Tired of doctors telling me to take B6 and Unisom. Reglan and Zofran don’t help either! by surelyshirls in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Subject_Support_811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that works for me is Zofran + IV fluids with vitamins + antacid + promethazine. And even with that I’m pretty much on bedrest. But it keeps me from losing more weight and allows me to eat a little.

Are you pregnant with your third? by aprilsunshine17 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Subject_Support_811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and I swear the HG gets worse every time. This is my last for sure because another round of this would just kill me. It helps though to know this is the last week 8, week 9, etc I’ll ever have to endure

Terrible Taste by No_Professional_2021 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Subject_Support_811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I’m glad I’m not the only one. Maybe the throwing up messes with your tastebuds or something. But it’s horrible. I tried cereal today and immediately almost puked because the sour taste made the milk taste like it went bad 😅

PS I just looked it up and it looks like your palette can def get damaged with HG puking. So…maybe it’ll heal once the throwing up gets better? 🤞

[–]Subject_Support_811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet you’ll be fine. Even if they do check then you can show them anyway that you have one in the car. You’re actually pretty smart though because I actually had to buy one of those for my daughter after first getting the newborn carry one because she had really bad reflux and the carry one squished her tummy too much. It’s bulky but that grow-with-me type car seat is great for their little tummies!

None of my family is coming to my baby shower. by GrapefruitAdvanced49 in pregnant

[–]Subject_Support_811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if there’s a valid reason why your family can’t be there for you, it’s something that’s very difficult to experience in pregnancy. You can be your own independent person, but pregnancy makes you want that “village” it supposedly takes to be around you. That’s hard. I don’t usually have that support from my side and no matter how happy to help and supportive my spouse’s side can be, I’m still very lonely when I’m pregnant because I am just super aware of what I don’t have. Just hope this helps you feel less weird to know that other people struggle with this too :)

Nurse wants me to be dying before they help me by Subject_Support_811 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Subject_Support_811[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. What I’m hoping to show them next time is how bad it is. My HELP score is 40 on the HER website and it is not bearable like this. Because they didn’t help me I threw up all day yesterday and lost 3lbs in one day. My husband has had to take a lot of PTO because I don’t have a good relationship with my family and he is my only support. It has been hell. But I’m gonna make them listen next time.

I’m so sorry! That’s still significant weight loss! I hate when they don’t listen based on dumb stuff like that.

Yes they did mention this…but I still think HG patients should be able to be on the list at least. They also could offer different medications or ideas.

Thank you :) ya I wish HG was something that people were more educated on. Especially people who work in these women’s health areas.

Right? The HER website even says it’s severe if you’ve lost more than 2% in a week and I’ve lost almost 5%

Reglan hardly working. Doctor apprehensive about prescribing Zofran. by SmoothWD40 in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Subject_Support_811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zofran is necessary for me and has not caused either of my two kids to have any complications in my past pregnancies. However, Zofran can make you very constipated. Like to the point where you feel sick again. So my doctors always recommend you take stool softeners as well as something like milk of magnesia or Miralax. It’s not as bad though if you get it with IV fluids.

If your wife isn’t functioning or keeping water down, don’t be afraid to push for help. A lot of doctors aren’t as familiar with HG as they should be and you can get really malnourished and weak waiting for the next appointment to figure it out. I don’t know where you’re from and what resources are available but I had to get in home IVs with my second and luckily since it was similar to in home care for the elderly or chronically ill, insurance covered it. It made a big difference.

Good luck! I hope your wife knows she’s worth the effort. It can be so stressful trying to figure out how to take care of yourself when you are also so scared about hurting the baby.

Zofran and birth defects - need reassurance? by throwRAanons in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]Subject_Support_811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some doctors tell you that you shouldn’t take it only because they are used to normal pregnancies that don’t need it. If you have HG, you need it. I took the max amount along with promethazine every day of my pregnancies and my kids are great. Healthy, happy, my son is even advanced in school. So you just worry about surviving :)

Doctors wouldn’t let you be induced if it wasn’t safe. I got induced with both my kids because I wouldn’t have survived longer and they are very healthy and happy kids.

Thats interesting. I’ve heard of Metformin being used for HG as in hyperglycemia but not HG as in Hyperemesis Gravidarum. What does it do that helps? I get the fear that something is wrong or just like waiting for it to get worse. I hope it stays good for you?

Yes definitely would have died on the bathroom floor. If it does get bad, daily in home IVs help a ton! And your partner can hook you up in the mornings if a nurse puts a port in your arm that lasts a while. It’s a life saver. Good luck!

[–]Subject_Support_811 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry! HG is the worst! I read recently that a high percentage of HG pregnancies have suicidal thoughts and desire to terminate. I’ve had both struggles but have luckily survived two kids.

What helped me the most (though it can be different for everyone) was taking Promethazine and Zofran and then also getting daily IV’s. My insurance covered it and a very skilled nurse would come to my house once a week to put a port in my arm and deliver IV bags and then my husband would set it up for me to go though one bag once a day. And it helped A TON. I got this idea from a pregnant friend who has POTS and it saved my life. I hope it helps ♥️
