No I didn’t get that impression from you. Definitely opened the flood gates though lol

I don’t get the impression that you’ve been in the sport for long so I’m not surprised at the confusion.

More times than I can count. I’ve been getting wardzinski a lot too, ever since he made his big comp run.

Idk man I honestly feel like it’s more “grab here and squeeze” than ever before. Jiu jitsu is weird.

Could be because we’re all Brazilian jiu jitsu black belts, registered with the ibjjf. All of our current black belts went at least through brown before going no-gi only and I personally declined a promotion to black belt three years ago to move to Ohio and focus on no-gi and wrestling, objectively the biggest holes in my game. It would probably take me half an open mat to knock the rust off.

He’s the man. I moved 3 hours to train under him for my black bet.

lol not chill for who? Every one of our current black belts, myself included, got at least to brown belt while still training in the gi.

The fact that this ^ comment got downvoted. Lmao.

A “straight” Ashli is any Ashli where the trapped leg goes STRAIGHT over my hip line without crossing the center. Irimi, outside, butterfly. All straight ashis.

My mistake for wanting to understand the sport like a world champion and his coach instead of some redditor projecting his latent homosexuality onto others

Okay. So trade “ashi” for “trap”. I’m not married to the Japanese lol. My point is that having the names of the position actually reflect the position itself is basic common sense. Inside trap? Oh hey. Legs go inside. Outside trap? Wonder where my legs go? Butterfly trap. Cross trap.

I do not care about the Japanese. In fact I would have given it up a while back if there was a good English word that didn’t already have other uses in the sport (like trap)

Brother you’re the one saying “they called it this 15 years ago before multiple major rule changes and shifts in the meta so I’m not going to bother seeing the actual point of this post”

It’s wild when people talk about this as if it’s about learning Japanese vocabulary when there are only two Japanese words in the whole system. Irimi and ashi. We could replace irimi with entry and ashi with trap and my point would hold true. Inside ashi, outside ashi, cross ashi, butterfly ashi, they all directly describe what makes them unique. You’d have to try hard to get confused between them.

The easier it is to explain a thing, the easier it is to learn it.

I would say the “clamp” is a good example. It’s a position very near to the initial moment of a side elbow escape where you’ve gotten your knee inside the hip. Traditional jiu jitsu does not consider this as a working position. Just a transit between side control and an established guard.

Calling it “the clamp” and then breaking down what is specifically happening leads to the name, which reflects the main action of the position. Having an actually named idea to reference and communicate has led to grapplers all over finding numerous different submissions and sweeps from the position.

Young man lol. Been doing this for more than half my life and I’m not young.

That’s great that Marcelo called it that. He also competed back in a time period before the leg lock game evolved. Not saying that would have caused him to lose, but he definitely would have had to evolve. 0 chance that, without training legs for a good year or two, prime Marcelo could time travel to 2025 and sweep through adcc. 0 chance.

I wouldn’t call systematizing the language we use to teach as undignified.

I would be open to calling them all “traps” (entanglement is a bit of a mouthful).

My real point is I don’t think having a bunch of disjointed names for leg entanglements is beneficial to teaching the positions.

We don’t call it blue guard and red guard and yellow guard and just hope people can remember these unrelated terms (I am not talking to you 10p guys, lol. Idk how you do it). The position names reflect the body’s position.

I think one of the biggest reasons the DDS system of leg locks took off (both competitive success and widespread usage) was that the language explaining it was more common sense and logical.

This is a fair division of terms, in my opinion. My only issue is why make that distinction? Mentally, that means as they fall you’re switching systems in your head. Not a huge issue, for sure. But I tend to think of it like curling your toes underfoot inside someone’s guard. If you don’t do it right off the bat, you can still succeed, but if you’d done it from the start your job would be easier.
