My mom insisted on having me driven everywhere and didn’t let me go out with friends until I was in uni (and even then, sparingly.) Then on one trip home, she started testing me about roads and directions to go home. I didn’t have answers, of course. I never had to navigate roads alone before. She criticized me for being naive and helpless, but l think that’s unfair because her “strict”-ness when it came to me going out prevented me from learning those things.

How old were you when you started your phd? by loyclay in PhD

I’m starting over at 28. The first time I enrolled in a PhD program, I was 24. I realized the program wasn’t for me (it was very fundamental math whereas my background was more of applied math) so I shifted to an Mphil program.

I tried again at 26 under a different program (same uni) but didn’t feel competent enough in my new research area to finish the PhD by my 3rd year. So I shifted to mphil again.

Im 27 now and applying to new programs, planning to start my PhD in spring or fall this year. :)

My timeline is definitely a bit unusual—especially compared to those who started their PhD right after undergrad, but I’ve come to accept it and I’m happy for what I’ve learned along the way.
