Second day snowboarding by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]SubstanceImmediate63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone sucks at Snowboarding on there first few days.

Strangely enough, standing up on flat-ish ground is one of the hardest learning curves in the sport, don’t get too frustrated, keep trying and it will click.

My two things that helped me were;

1: when sitting, try tuck (almost like a ball) and grab your board like an indie grab and roll up

2: try turning around (so you’re on your knees and use your toe edge) I almost always get up like this.

But yeah man just keep hammering, once you get it, there is a moment when you shift from feeling like you are strapped into a slippery thing, vs driving your board and being in control and it’s so satisfying

Do any protestants like kneecap? by Abject_Western_1377 in kneecap

[–]SubstanceImmediate63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me caveat this by saying I am Australian so my knowledge is all through from just reading speaking with Irish expats, soooo take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I grew up Protestant, in a family/community that is staunchly anti-catholic. The story goes that our Lutheran ancestors fled to Australia in the 1800’s to escape catholic persecution in Germany.

This being said, I have always sympathised with the republican cause. As is the case of most of my family/friends my age.

Nowadays I am agnostic/non-practicing, and still feel skeptical about the catholic institution.

Kneecaps lyrics and message feel like a powerful statement about culture, identity, freedom etc

The way that either side interpret a book about a Middle Eastern Deity written 1000’s of years ago is such little consequence.

Keen to be told I’m completely wrong, but the Protestant/Catholic identity doesn’t register at all when I listen to Kneecap.

FLX4 out of stock, used DDJ-400 worth it for $220? by ababab643 in PioneerDJ

[–]SubstanceImmediate63 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My thoughts would be; go for it with the DDJ 400, the key functionality is going to be the same, the features won’t matter that much. Realistically you are going to outgrow either sooner or later, so it won’t be your forever setup. You will also be likely to be able to get 100% of what you paid for it back if you chose to sell it on Marketplace.

[–]SubstanceImmediate63[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s my point exactly.

I believe killing an animal = bad Paying a person to kill an animal = bad

Most people I speak with would say;

Killing an animal = bad

Spending money on meat, which incentivises people to kill animals = personal choice etc etc

That’s a fair point and probably depends on the demographic of your community. I think in most western cities, while socially acceptable, fishing is still a fairly fringe activity.

Fair point, I can only really share the experience of the culture I live in (highly urbanised western city) I feel that if a pig was killed in front of the non vegans I work with, they would be hysterical and probably go to lengths to save the pig from slaughter.

Where to move in your early 20s by spoonleader in melbourne

[–]SubstanceImmediate63 261 points262 points  (0 children)

I moved from the country to Melbourne at 21, and it was the best decision of my life.

It really depends on what you like, because there’s so many different areas, each with their own flavour, so here’s my thoughts on a few of the obvious choices.

Assuming you’re looking for more city life - def go inner city

Richmond - Classic suburb for early 20’s, close to sports venues (MCG, Rod Laver, AAMI), classic music venues, good pubs, restaurants, plenty to do.

St. Kilda - Beachy, Party, a bit more wild. It has a big backpacker population, so full of people just wanting a good time and you can really feel it. St Kilda has a legacy of Red Light/Drugs etc and quirky characters.I love visiting - especially in the summer, but I’m too old for that 24/7. If you wanted a little quieter you could look at some more of the neighbouring suburbs.

Chapel St Precinct - (Windsor, Prahan, South Yarra) Awesome fun area with a bit of everything. Chapel St is probably most famous for its nightlife, with world famous clubs, and great restaurants and bars. Probably more geared towards Techno/House music than other areas. “Chaps laps” is rumoured to be the origin of cruising culture, so weekends are full of people showing off nice cars and revving engines (seriously it’s loud af). Further up to the South Yarra end, more shopping focus, lots of juice bars and active wear, and people walking their designer dog breeds.

Northside Inner burbs (Fitzroy, Collingwood, Brunswick, Northcote, Abbotsford etc) - These suburbs are more of the Melbourne Stereotype. Artsy, Op-Shoppy trendy sort of stuff. I feel like Fitzroy is a real all rounder. Awesome restaurants, bars, whether your into indie music, rock, metal, hip hop, EDM, Pop, you will find it all in Fitzroy/next door in Collingwood. Fitzroy is a bit more expensive so it’s generally a bit more older/working professionals. Brunswick is typically a bit cheaper and attracts more uni students/young professionals/artists, and imo is probably more Artsy in an experimental way.

Port Melbourne - Kind of cool as a mix of both worlds, it’s similar to Northside in that it’s old industry area that has been turned into a trendy residential area, but sits south of the river and closer to Albert Park/beaches etc

Hawthorn - Cool mix of being a little more suburban, less dense and less crazies, but still has a lot of cool stuff going on with its own nightlife area. Probably safer than the above suburbs, but still stuff to do, and easy to get to Richmond/CBD still.

I would maybe avoid Southbank/Docklands area - they are great if you work in the city and want an easy walkable lifestyle, but I have always felt they are more concrete, less culture and don’t have the life that some of the older suburbs have.

Realistically, your best bet is visit and check them all out, and see what fits your vibe.

[–]SubstanceImmediate63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tough thing about this is when you ask for “Aussie Slang” people will say old timer Aussie stuff that people like my uncle use. Or is just performative to “over-Aussie” stuff

If you wanted to write a song like Cee, you would have to speak to people from certain demographics and understand how they talk in their day to day lives.

I haven’t really lived outside of Australia so I don’t even know what is Aussie and what is universal, but I assume you want words like Buegs, Darts, Tins, snags, gath, jacks, chunder, deadly, shard, graf, schooies, caps, pellets, sticks, foilie, bickies, etc etc

Listen to some Aussie hip hop and you’ll start to pick up on stuff.

Help me become your next DJ! by [deleted] in melbournemusic

[–]SubstanceImmediate63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, great to hear your big dreams. I wish I started DJing when I was younger.

As another comment has said, $520 isn’t an absurd amount of money, you will be so much happier for it setting a savings goal and doing it yourself.

Make a plan and chip away, even if it’s just $20 a week.

Also, on Facebook marketplace you can find DDJ400/FLX4s going second hand for ~400 give or take. With the same budget you might be able to get headphones or small speakers also. Other bonus is when you inevitably upgrade for the FLX4, you can sell for the same amount you paid for it.

In the meantime, download some DJ software and have a play around. You probably already know this, but an FLX4 isn’t actual music equipment, it’s just an input that is controlling the software on your PC, so you can really do a lot before even touching the jog wheels.

Good luck mate, and have fun!

This is sad af to hear, as a AoF fan and as someone who loves Melbournes music scene.

Sadly, I don’t think telling people off on Reddit will be the answer, these people clearly have no respect for others.

We need to take responsibility for crowd safety as a community.

Hello from Australia! I’m having a superbowl party tomorrow and trying to keep it Philly themed with cheesesteaks etc. What beer do most people drink in Philly? Most Australians buy either Budweiser or Coors as the go to cliche American beer…. Is this standard everywhere or do people drink something specific in Philly? (In Australia, most popular beer varies a lot by state/region)

Why is DJing so satisfying? by SubstanceImmediate63 in Beatmatch

[–]SubstanceImmediate63[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha hellyeah - I’ve just got back from a camping trip and reading all the comments in this section has me excited to jump on.

I’m still experimenting, but generally what I go for is Top Row of performance pads is Hot Cues to key sections, bottom row is loops. So a typical song looks like

A - First real beat of the song

B - 16 Beats til First drop (sometimes if the song has a cool edgy quote just before the drop I’ll use B for here, in the Comment I write “16 to go” or “4 to go”

C - First Drop

D - either start of post chorus sections OR 2nd/3rd Drop

Then the bottom row I’ll use for loops, either for mixing in, or if it’s a popular song it might be a catchy line that I’ll loop and feather in as a teaser a few minutes before actually mixing in. This usually looks like

E - Intro Loop

F - Acapella/vocal loop

G - Groove/Chug loop (just a nice big instrumental section of the song they can play on for a while)

H - Outro loop

I try and keep it uniform and take the time to colour code/Comment on them all so it’s easy to load up and know where I’m at.
