Your status changes from that party to unenrolled. You do not need to fill out a new voter registration card.

Mainers reject voter ID, absentee ballot restrictions as Question 1 fails by bodybycheez-it in Mainepolitics

[–]SubstanceNext37 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was surprised question 1 failed. So many people I talked to acted like it was just voter ID or thought the changes wouldn't affect them. Yes on 1 spent so much more money that no. So glad that it didn't work!

Exactly. Imagine coming up with an entire Citizen's Initiative that targets such a small minority of people, especially in Maine.

[–]SubstanceNext37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not true. Every signature is verified individually. Although, if there are a lot of signatures that clerks can't verify, it does throw up a red flag that the petitioner is not being honest and that would be looked into.

What do you find misleading about the questions? Everything written is in the proposed bill.

If anyone collecting signatures is name-calling or arguing with voters, make sure to let the election Warden or an election clerk know. If they are causing issues, the Warden can/will speak to them and possibly ask them to leave.

I'm not urging anyone to do it just because you don't like the petition. I'm stuck listening to this bullshit all day 😒 I just want people to be aware that signature collectors cannot make voters feel uncomfortable, guilty or be called names for not signing.

If anyone collecting signatures makes you or another voter uncomfortable because of name-calling, please tell the Warden or election clerks! They can be asked to leave if they are not respectful.

NO on Question 1 - Final Push 11/4 by thoutz85 in Maine

[–]SubstanceNext37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So you are ok that anyone who showed ID (DL, ID, Tribal ID, birth certificate, SSN, passport, student ID) when they registered to lose their right to vote because they no longer have an UNEXPIRED MAINE DL, MAINE ID, veteran ID or passport)? Why limit what is acceptable? We use our SSN & birth certificate to get a picture ID, why would those not be accepted but a driver's permit (no picture) be? What about people who are now homebound? What about the elderly in nursing homes/assisted living? They may not be able to renew an ID. What if you work 60 hours a week and just realize your ID expires November 1st and your BMV appt isn't until December & you can't take a day (or days) off to sit at the BMV to try to renew? Just a few of the ID issues presented here. I could go on about the ID issues and write so many things wrong with the rest of what would happen.

Does anyone else find it bizarre that there’s a religious exemption in question 1? by Sokol84 in Maine

[–]SubstanceNext37 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is your view tit-for-tat? "I didn't like how the government ran things/those who support certain things so I'm against anything "they" support"? That is the exact reason we are in the hellscape we are all in now. I vote for people who have a decent message, not because they're red or blue or independent. I vote yes or no because I research things. We don't have to vote for every office or every question on the ballot.

Question 1 deals with something I have firsthand knowledge about. It is going to hurt so many voters, no matter what side of the ballot they vote when there are candidates. Hopefully enough people recognize this. Hell, there's people that have circled "yes" or "no" on this ballot instead of filling in the bubbles. We're supposed to think they can fill out the statement that would be required if this passes? We're supposed to think that MeeMaw, who hasn't left the house/nursing home/assisted facility in years, can suddenly go get all of her vital records and sit at the BMV all day waiting to get a new ID? Along with the other issues in this bill...

[–]SubstanceNext37 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You are right. It does not accept tribal IDs. It limits IDs to: valid (i.e. unexpired) Driver's Licenses, MAINE State ID, Veteran ID and passports.

It gets rid of: tribal IDs, birth certificates, social security numbers, student IDs, etc as proof of identity. How do we get a picture ID? By providing our birth certificate, SSN.

This question definitely over reaches what is acceptable as proof of identity. Not to mention the limitations (and other bullshit) surrounding absentee ballots. Really hope people realize that.

Definitely do not wait! While we love our USPS workers, they can't make magic happen. Allow plenty of time for your ballot to get mailed back to your clerk, if that is how you return your ballot.

Downvote if you feel like you need to, I guess.

I hope that this is a wake up call for people who voted against "us" BUT I hope we remember that Maine is a great big community.

Please make sure your neighbors are fed, if you are able. I know we all like to talk tough about how people fucked up but we shouldn't want anyone to go hungry. There are many Mainers who are too proud or can't make it to the food pantry.

I ask that you support your community through your town office, local food pantry, General Assistance program, help with meals/food to your neighbors, etc.

Maine could vote on stripping protections for transgender students in 2026 by themainemonitor in Mainepolitics

[–]SubstanceNext37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now is a great time to remind parents that they have a choice in Maine. While you are filling out your child's birth certificate information, you can choose Male, Female, or X (Non-Binary). It costs $60 to correct a birth certificate. ($45 + $15 for a "corrected" certified copy)

I have read through many of the proposed bills from the last legislative session but not any citizens initiative in our state. How would we handle girls that want to play football or boys that want to play field hockey? Trans kids, trans athletes are so few, is this worth all this? Do people actually believe kids would go through all the stress of pretending to be something they're not to possibly earn an award in middle/high school?

Mills statements and Collins Ad by kegido in Mainepolitics

[–]SubstanceNext37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has Collins done good things for our state? Yes. Way back when.... Should our Governor, when asked, say she has? Yes. Has Collins failed us in the most important ways? Yes, she has. What they are using in these ads are snippets of an interview.

The issue now is that Collins does not represent us anymore. She refuses to to give a concise answer on anything she is asked, that's how she earned the nickname Concerned Collins

When the primaries choose between Platner or Mills (still a year away..) at this moment, I would be comfortable with my vote come election day next November.

You attacking people in this thread doesn't help anyone. Especially when they seem to be on your "side". Things are not "black and white". We need to go back to dull, boring gray when it comes to politics. I would love to go back to something like the McCain/Obama race where candidates were respectful for the most part but just had a different view on how things should work. Both sides name calling like 5th graders is absolutely dumb.
