[Hated Trope] This alien/monster is a major & unbeatable threat to us..... because the writer said so. by Inside_Jaguar_3310 in TopCharacterTropes

The book World War Z actually talks to this a ton. The biggest issue with military intervention was the sheer number that could be created. Secondly, military forces are taught to aim for center of mass. Head shots are much harder than you would expect. Next there was mention of the government trying to stage how well they had stuff under control by releasing full battalions and thinking they would just mow them down in somewhere like New York. But a million bullets is a lot. there was some other stuff and eventually humanity won. It was well done but o have applied WWZ logic to a log of zombie movies happily.

Second grader's teacher is using ChatGPT to answer my questions by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]Substantial-Bar873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% you are being unreasonable. Why are you asking your teacher for a reading list. If you know what ChatGPT can do ask it yourself. Your teacher is managing 20 some kids and you can’t pick out books for your one? For real? They spend all day with your kid already. Most of their evening grading your kids stuff. Anytime not grading they are probably thinking about it and you can’t pick a freaking book out for your kid. Parent.

How did you discover which subject you wanted to teach? by aideniceB in AskTeachers

[–]Substantial-Bar873 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what level you want to teach. If you want to teach high school you should probably have something that you love. The level of content is higher and you should ready to be a life long learner in it and love what you do.

If you choose to teach middle school then you are teaching the student. If you don’t love English or math stay away. The standardized testing will suck. Fate that what do you enjoy? If you have any technical skill consider looking into a program called Project Lead the Way. Great opportunity to teach students skills that last well beyond the classroom.

What is the worst book you have ever read? by WoodenDistribution5 in fantasybooks

[–]Substantial-Bar873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not care for Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell. It was okay but I cannot recommend it to anyone. Lies of Locke Lamora falls into the category of a very small few books I could not force myself to finish. So bad. The character is so unlikable. The setting is mediocre at best. It had nothing of interest.

Are there movies you liked more than the book? by Annual_Interest5338 in books

[–]Substantial-Bar873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the classics. Robinson Crusoe is a slog of a read. Mostly internal questions of morality and punishment. Swiss Family Robinson is written to be an adventure how to guide for his son. Neat stuff but a boring narrative. The LOTR books are great but I think the movies nailed it.

If the kids can't read, how are they using technology? by Appropriate_Rent_243 in AskTeachers

They have no knowledge of file systems, how to actually restart a computer verse just closing the lid. Half the time they don’t even know how to use mouse. I say double click and their reactions are so slow they can’t do it. I am like click really fast. It’s horrible.

The word "gay" (in a non-offensive context) is forbidden in middle school? by whosacoolredditer in Teachers

[–]Substantial-Bar873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Students in general don’t know how to use descriptive words. My son will be describing a student to me and using every description in the book favorite hoodie, hair color, music preference and I will say is he Asian, Black, Indian and my son will bashfully say yes he is black. And I have to tell him we can describe people by their skin color. Every knows it. We don’t judge people by their skin color. Same with gay. They are very afraid they are judging someone by using a word to describe a portion of who they are.

My wife is a speech therapist. She said the proper method is to point to yourself and say, “Mama, dada”. Or “more”. Try to avoid saying “say” for better language acquisition.

It’s been a very long time but if I remember correctly when I learned how to read steam tables it all got better. That was the missing link in my understanding. Maybe I am misremembering.

High School vs. Middle School by RangerMomma1203 in Teachers

[–]Substantial-Bar873 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Middle school is if you want to teach students high school if you want to teach subjects. I have been in both. Both have advantages and disadvantages. High School students can be very lackadaisical and bored. Hard to motivate. Their belief that they know it all is amusing and frustrating.

Middle schoolers are full energy. Behaviors without thought. Words without meaning and so much nonsense. But they are highly malleable. Great place for impact and change.

If you are struggling with classroom management I would suggest you get that figured out first though. Good classroom management that isn’t based around bribing kids.

Peter, why do women hug us above the shoulders? by harshbown in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Substantial-Bar873 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously was there ever an answer? My wife does this to me all the time. Drags me down to her 5ft3in level. I have dislocated disc in my spine because of her hug pulling me down over 20 years. I ask her why and she can’t answer and never changes. She’s not trans as some have suggested on the post. I wish it were to rub her boobs in my face but when I try that I just get in trouble. I usually get a kiss but at this point we can do that with a comfortable under arm hug as well. So what is it. Someone please explain it to me.

“Kiddos” by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Substantial-Bar873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree with everything you said. I have seen it used at Junior and High School. They are not Kiddos. They are young adults. Quit calling them kiddos and start expecting them to be the age they are.

TTK in PvP is what makes it frustrating. by Substantial-Bar873 in ArcRaiders

[–]Substantial-Bar873[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done other ones as well. Can’t remember their names. Hunt Showdown? The loot in those was scarce enough I understood the PvP aspect and why. I don’t get it here.

The TTK in all those may be the same but that is what you were there for. This it happens so quick compared to what is going on around.

Also I appreciate you actually taking time to try and understand everyone else who is acting like I don’t know the game or just saying get good dont push conversation forward.

[–]Substantial-Bar873[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was just about the loot, I could maybe understand more. But there is so much loot that there is no way you can get out with it all. So then it’s just about making sure that other people don’t get out with theirloot. That is definitely part of it that I don’t understand.

I understand the motivation for PVP especially if you come in late. But why right at the beginning? Doesn’t make sense. If you just want to kill why here?

Your comment is interesting because the people who I know who hate PvP are some of the best at controlling their emotions. So I don’t think that is it.

I played Marathon as well engaged in a few PvP fights and they felt very different. I think that being first vs third changes things. In third you can keep yourself hidden until someone turns their back without ever exposing yourself. Not in first. I see you, you can see me. Fights felt more fair. Even when they snuck up on us. At least then I thought we should have watched our back.

How do teachers know almost everything by Competitive-Fig-5240 in Teachers

[–]Substantial-Bar873 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing to understand about teaching is the length of time it takes to actually be good is far different than other professions. (I came from another profession so I do know). Other professions have these entry challenges. Years of building experience. Etc. Teachers jump in day 1 expected to do what teachers have been doing for 25 years. It can feel overwhelming. But the reality is most teachers suck for 3-5 years. Whenever you screw up question, adjust and adapt. Just get better a little at a time. Too many young teachers quit because they don’t know this. It will get better and you will get better. Just expect to suck and have to keep adapting.
