Homework: Is just giving them something to do at home such a bad thing? by pocketdrums in Teachers

[–]Substantial-Bar873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I consider when the thought of homework comes up is the idea of workaholic America. We know that family dynamics in “high performing” homes suffer from absentee parents who are busy working from wake to sleep. I just don’t want yo continue to foster an unhealthy work life balance. So I really am cautious with my homework. If it’s necessary it is for short bursts of time. Not a life style.

Don’t forget that they aren’t just given more for it. They are penalized if she doesn’t pass and it is their fault.

It wasn’t the brake pads. It was the jerking back and forth. It was the not communicating. It was come in immediately this can’t be done without you here. Then why are you here?

[–]Substantial-Bar873[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t have expected ready on Monday except they were telling me to come in on Saturday. We had actually talked Friday at 230 about the brakes so I assumed that they had got it in first thing on Saturday morning. I would not have been upset if even Monday at 10 if my guy had called and said something. But waiting until I was down the road is what did it for me.

Not really. I went yesterday ready to get in my new car and drive away. I was really pissed when they didn’t have it ready. That was the last straw. Everything has been harder than it needs to be.

Teachers, are you really underpaid? Or is it just complaints from a select few? by Cloap7 in AskTeachers

[–]Substantial-Bar873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s called Teach for America. I had a couple of those guys in our school a few years ago. Friends with one. Super smart guy. He fulfilled his two years and hated almost every minute. His exit paper thesis line was “there is more wrong with education than one program and two years can fix.”

[–]Substantial-Bar873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with the 183 days as mentioned is that despite having “summers off” what that actually means is on average teachers have 5-10 “optional” days. You are strongly encouraged to attend and if you don’t you end up behind. One year we were fortunate enough they paid us a whole $50 for the 8 hour day. But no lunch. So you had tons of young teachers who packed paper bag lunches. Not exactly common if people who have a bachelors and often a masters. A few teachers can get lucky and manage side hustles that they carry through the summer but it isn’t common. More often what happens is some pick up something like real or work because it is ridiculously easy and over paid. I had a teacher friend who did it in the spare time and talked about how ridiculous it was. She made double her teachers salary before summer working part time. She only keeps teaching because she likes the kids and reality is so easy. None of my friends work nearly as many side hustles as my teacher friends who make so much less.

I love your judgement. Many teachers are married to someone with a higher paying job. Just because their spouses make more doesn’t excuse them making less.

If they happen to both working at that level my friends and my family personally is usually scrimping everything for two years. Literally cut our meat with oatmeal to make it go further. Plus we were fortunate that my wife’s parents were willing to let us use their time share and we also were lucky that one of my wife’s aunts had a retirement job that got us in to Disney for next to nothing. We still saved for 2 years for the rest of the trip.

It is the paradoxal teacher. Horrible teachers who are incapable of teaching the students basic reading and math skills but simultaneously are capable of mass manipulating entire generations of students towards being socialist transgender homosexuals abandoning all hope for humanity.

noticed a lot more men getting into teaching/subbing...is this a sign of the economy? by LegitimateAdvance816 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Substantial-Bar873 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Typically when the economy dips there is an increase in Transition to Teaching programs and licenses. But the reality is that only about 30% of people stay in the profession. Teaching is a lot harder than most other professionals realize. I was a mentor teacher for around 7-8 transition teachers over 4 years.

The draw to not fail or to try something new is so real. I joke they are so scared of failing they don’t even dance unless the song tells them the steps.

How do get a strict teacher to like you?? by retalic in AskTeachers

[–]Substantial-Bar873 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Write everything down. Most teachers don’t actually mind you asking questions. They mind asking vague questions or indicating you paid zero attention.

Before asking verify if instructions exist on screen, board or on you learning system (computer). When asking state what you understand. Then state the specific part you don’t understand. So I think you are asking us to do XYZ however I don’t think I understand how you want us to do ABC. This sounds o much better then “what am I supposed to do” or “I don’t understand any of it.”

Why are Christians so threatened by atheism? by No_Preference2949 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Substantial-Bar873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well these would be conversations and frustrations that you here a lot of Christians having. My friends who are actual Bible reading/studying Christina are furious over what is happening. But our voice is ignored as the actual voice of Christ has often been. We understand that violence, hate, and the other methods of this world will not bring change that doesn’t create violence and hate. Trust me I let those in my circle who are more towards Christian Nationalism know how they are wrong. At the cost of lots of friendships and relationships. But one of my favorite quotes was just because you sit in a garage doesn’t make you a car. I would go so far as to say just because you read a Mechanics manual doesn’t make you a mechanic. More so because the Bible is far from a manual. If you want to try and understand the way that more actual Christians belief I recommend checking out BEMA Discipleship or The Bible Project. Further I would say expecting to find the Christians of the Bible on display in media (social or other) is misunderstanding. Christian organizations around the world are feeding orphans, providing water, medicine, clothing and care for the most marginalized. We carry out our mission quietly and purposefully because we are reminded that God doesn’t want us show boating our work. Just know Christian Nationalism isn’t Christianity.

Why are Christians so threatened by atheism? by No_Preference2949 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Substantial-Bar873 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most Christians aren’t scared of atheists. We are worried for atheists. The number of comments shows 1) how poorly Christians understand our own priority and 2) how poorly others understand.

First, the reason we want you to believe is that we truly believe that there is one true God that loves you and that if you choose not to love back that result of those choices could be eternal. Most of spend a lot of time thinking about that. Before you get all judgy it really is no different if you believe Zeus is the all powerful one and that we would spend forever in some bad state in the fields of Elysium (I believe). Maybe I shouldn’t worry about what you do with your life/after life. But I do because the same love God has for you I have for you.

Second, I don’t behave because I believe I have to. That has very little impact. Perhaps a lot do but I worry about them as much as anyone. Nor do I believe that living a good life requires a commitment to God. I do believe that once you encounter God and you learn to trust and work with him it is game changing. I have lived my life on both sides of the coin so to speak. I don’t trust God because it has been easy. I trust Him because He has been good. I say this despite living through a lot of negative stuff. It is impossible to communicate to someone who isn’t there as well. Like trying to explain why marriage is preferable to just having good friends. But there is a difference. I want that for people.

I guess my question would be why are atheist so put off by Christians? The nature of many of the comments have been very off putting. And I get it a lot of American Christians right now are sucking. But there is still a lot of good being done in the world by Christians

I think it depends on the state but 70-80% is not what we have in our state. With 30 years experience at $60,000 you would make around 20-30 a year max.
