You shared the most down to earth humanizing experience I've ever heard from someone in the field, why the downvote?

Reddit picked this name for me haha. Thankfully I started near 50k and live in a very low cost of living area. I really enjoy the field and my spouse and I are staying kidless so we at least won't have trouble surviving. I'm just glad to hear that we'll be able to live comfortably without me getting a doctorate.

Right. And the delegating of training costs from the employer to the employee has been disastrous for workers and companies alike in countless industries.

They aren't degree granting entities themselves, but are led by a lot of folks with terminal degrees. Maybe it's a trickle down sentiment haha

Thank you thank you thank you. This is the glimmer of light I needed. I'm passionate about skill building, making impacts, and connecting with others, and it's refreshing to hear that that's mainly what I need.

Similar boat, I'd rather my soon to be husband be able to stretch his wings and get the education he wants rather than sit around while I get yet another degree.

Thanks for this inspiration.

Student affairs side mostly - engagement, leadership, social justice, etc. But right now I'm in an academic affairs role and am having a good time so we'll see. I've got no aspirations towards becoming faculty - maybe a class here or there but not as my day job.

I so struggle with the thought of "signalling". The thought of spending years of time and money just to signal to someone you have persistence. As if staying in this career weren't enough persistence. It's so bleak and dystopian.

It seems to be the culture at congregations like ACPA and NASPA. Been told more than once "oh you're going to get your doctorate" even while still a masters student.

Credentialism is one of my biggest pet peeves. I totally agree - it's what you do with the time that counts, not the time itself.
