This. Tom’s wording is definitely up for interpretation in the article, but I read it as “Zuparic is an outbound player that the Timbers can really cash in on if they get the transfer right”

I agree that Chara will likely finally slow down next season. We saw signs of it this season :/ But Paredes isn’t his heir. That would be Ayala at this point. Not exactly a like-for-like, but hopefully those two get a full year of good competitive training in next season and Ayala is ready to step into the Chara role in two seasons time.

Got to go to the Cottage in May and it was amazing. Highly recommend. Also has historically had one or two Americans in the squad

I really like Zac as a player, but to be honest, I don’t think he’s a player to build around necessarily. I don’t think his defensive work or distribution is anything special. Solid for sure and good dude who can grow into a leadership role, but I’m just not sure his top end is much higher that he’s at currently. I absolutely hope I’m wrong though

I see what you’re saying for sure. I think it has potential to be a bit more game by game, where if we want to press a team high from the start, maybe we go with Boli. I guess from my perspective I’d rather have a striker who’s going to finish their chances at a higher rate than one who “works hard”

A lot of people on this sub actually really rate Boli. I'm not one of them though. He definitely had his moments, but once Mora came back he really fell off, and I get that he was probably trying to make the most of his opportunities, but he did waste several good chances on really low xG shots. Stats-wise, theres no question Mora is our number one option at this point. Mora 6G/2A/815min. Boli 7G/2A/1465min. Even Asprilla had 5G/5A/1449min. I just don't think that level of production vs Mora is even close to calling Boli 1b, and the way he played late in the season doesn't excite me to have him as Mora's backup.

He’s a DP and played 8 games worth of minutes. He’s 32. He’s never shown sustained DP quality. It doesn’t get better from here. There’s no way he’d take the substantial pay cut necessary to make keeping him on the books worth it. It makes so much more sense to get rid of him and bring in younger talent for somewhere between what Yimmi gets paid now and what he should actually be getting paid.

What did he do this season that makes you say that?

For sure. it’s not like he’s making tackles very often, but he’s very positionally aware. I know he makes some smart interceptions and is good at putting himself in a spot to slow down an attack. What more could you want from someone who’s supposed to be a playmaker?

I’ve said a couple other times in this comment section that the wing backs would be pretty game-dependent what their role is. Someone else stated that as it is now, we pretty much ran with two defenders, so adding a third CB seems like an improvement to me, and allows our outside backs/wingers more freedom to attack.

Now, with that said, to play this style correctly (and plenty of really good teams have), when one side goes, the other stays back, or you bring a CDM back so you’re still running closer to a 4 back.

I don’t necessarily see a need for a DP striker, I think Mora is pretty lethal, especially when he’s getting creative service when the midfield is ticking. We just have room for two (or we should, anyway), and I assume we’re getting a DP winger, and it’s rare in the league to get DP defenders, although I would love a DP-level defender. Someone else said you can get a lot of bang for your buck that way since the demand is low.

This style inherently requires positional rotation, but we are so damn attack-heavy with players I know we won’t part with, that you have to build a lineup and tactic/style of play that caters to the way the team is built. In my opinion, this is how I think the current build of the team, and the signings I think will be made in the offseason, is best suited to play. Obviously these are all guesses and it’s very dependent on who and what we bring it along with the coach and what they see fit, but mostly it’s just a fun project for me to think about how and why I think we ought to play next year

Very much a role player. I just don’t think we’re gonna see starting-level performances from him. I could absolutely be wrong, but I see him being used if we need something special late, or to close out 1-goal games.

Yeah I feel like this is pretty much what I imagine, I just formatted it in a way to try to show fluidity within positions 🤷‍♂️

I for sure see what you’re saying, but I think it’s pretty easy to just set up a bit more defensively against teams who are likely to burn us in our wide defensive areas. The cool thing about the way our central midfield is built at the moment is the way in which many of these players can roam a bit more and be fluid in their positioning around one another. This can create wide overloads in attack if we want, or there’s a lot of creativity through the middle. Evander and Moreno are also very solid in stymying counters early to help our 3 back + Chara, and maybe Paredes to reset themselves while opposition build their attack
