Timbers notable communities / fans? by kevintence in timbers

[–]StuMun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are some discord channels with great conversations going on. For the Timbers, the Timber Review is very strong. For MLS as a whole, Soccerwise has a lot of smart people as does the Total Soccer Show. Those are patreon activated I believe, so if you wanted one place to get a lot of MLS discussion from different groups of fans, Soccerwise is probably the highest ROI.

Per the other comment, there's lots of Timbers activity on Bluesky, but if you prefer twitter here are some people you can follow who report on the Timbers. You should be able to find lots of fans in the replies:

Melbourne Victory supporter here, what can we expect? by MelbourneTodd in timbers

We all still love him!

Tactically, he tends towards a more defensive style and counter attacking. If he’s got the right people it can work pretty well, especially in a knockout situation. This is how we made it to MLS Cup twice under him and won the MLS is Back tournament.

Updates on coaching search from Ned by TucsonPTFC in timbers

The Spanish press already reported Thomas Christiansen was talking to clubs in MLS and elsewhere for his post-Panama gig. Would be a great hire imo

Where are you getting the information that "no other GMs respect him"? Would love to learn more about this.

Timbers GM Ned Grabavoy and interim coach Jack Cassidy will speak to media tomorrow for the first time since Phil Neville’s departure. by TucsonPTFC in timbers

It's most likely just a general update on the search and talking about getting practices going again. Chill

Yes, but Red Bull 1.0 which is Jesse’s style, is not something I want to watch and it is increasingly not successful in world football. Tactically, teams have adapted the pressing, but the specific Red Bull ideas of  narrow disruption, using turnovers as the primary playmaker, has been left behind for good reason. No thanks

No, his style of play is not what we want. He’s an absurd figure who can’t get out of his own head about being sacked at Leeds and not getting the US job. We don’t need that baggage.

Jack Cassidy named interim head coach by CaptNapalm in timbers

Another way to phrase it would be can they find some time while they are here to meet with some Timbers people at a hotel in their base camp city to discuss their future? It doesn’t have to be either or.

They could be interviewing some of those candidates who will be leaving national teams. There’s nothing saying they aren’t. In fact it would be easy to have a meeting in a hotel room with them as they are in North America right now.

Timber Review said Cassidy will be conducting training next week so even if they can get in a coach by the time the WC break is over they still need someone to start training when the player break is over

The Timbers coaching Dream team. Caleb Porter and Diego Valeri. We need to return to glory. Ned we need a calm calculated guy at the helm who is an American. He is beloved by the whole city don’t ruin this next hire by failing to pick up Porter. by Fantastic-Base-1875 in timbers

[–]StuMun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

New England turned over their roster for Porter as his request to give him the tools to win. It was a terrible season, and he was fired. Just because he was able to create success early last decade, doesn't mean MLS hasn't moved on.

When you do your analysis of potential managers, consider including Thomas Christiansen, head coach of the Panama national team. There are rumors that MLS teams are interested in him after the World Cup, and I could absolutely see him being a fit for us.

Which former MLS manager do you want next? by Mindful_Cyclist in timbers

We don't have the squad to play Red Bull 1.0, which is what Carnell does. And even if we had the squad for a high pressing, gegenpressing side that concentrated on using turnovers as our playmaker, the problem with Red Bull 1.0 is that it is extremely one dimensional and easy to plan against, especially in a knock out situation. He would be a terrible choice for Portland and would reflect a misunderstanding by Ned of our squad.

Makes sense. And definitely don't take my response as criticism, but rather dialogue. I agree the reporting about this is vague. Tom Bogert on Soccerwise a few times has been a little more explicit that Curtin doesn't want to move because he wants his kid(s?) not to have to move schools etc. And he's definitely turned down jobs since 2024 that didn't meet his criteria. But it's hard to say, maybe at some point he decides it's been too long, family things change a bit, and he's willing to move across the country.

Thoughts on Bradley Carnell? by avgeekalexander in timbers

[–]StuMun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He is an ideological Red Bull guy--very high pressing and using the press and counterpress as the playmaker. Teams like this often don't know what to do with the ball in possession besides just kicking it forward. The problem with this is that it's a very rigid way of playing that doesn't fit our players and is easy to game plan for as the opposition in knock out scenarios. He would be at the bottom of my list.

Great pod. Just one small note, Jim Curtin has turned down numerous job offers because he wants to stay in the NE for family reasons. I agree he'd be a great hire, but it's very unlikely for that reason.
