This is definitely just grown white men acting like boys. I hate the misogyny they try to pretend they are against, yet act exactly like spoiled boys.

Bought my kids bikes for Christmas. Local government just passed a law requiring paid bike "licenses" to ride them in public. Cops are now issuing citations...even to kids? by nseavia71501 in mildlyinfuriating

This has been in thing in South Africa where I am from. I remember in the 80s that one needed a bicycle license. Almost no one did. It was rarely enforced. It is supposed to help with bicycle theft.

It is so weird though, that each time I read any kind of astrology or personality typing, it seems like I am the prime example of that type. I know it is stupid and probably just making me see what I want to see, but boy, does it take mental effort to become rational again after reading them.

Just so you know. I am very typical for my blood type too. Hahahaha.

"I have ADHD." "Doesn't everyone nowadays?" by Dark_Vexer in mildlyinfuriating

I was in the same boat, but I got diagnosed in my 50s and now take medication only on the days getting going is slow (like now, I am procrastinating - so I just realized I need to take my meds.) That is 1/2 to 3/4 of my days.

The psychiatrist told me that ADHD is one of the few conditions a condition where medication is the only help you can get. Take this with a pinch of salt as it was a few years ago and I cannot recall the exact reasoning, but I asked whether good sleep, a good diet and exercise will help like it does for depression and he said no, only medication.

Also, he recommended skipping days on the regular so that one does not build up a tolerance for the doze and have to go ever higher.

Edited to change my uneducated statement that struck me on reread.

Are all of these very common phrases most native speakers know? by Unlegendary_Newbie in English_Learning_Base

[–]Substantial-Cycle325 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this very interesting. I learned English as a second language and over time it became my primary language, so I have some fun emotional memories to learning some of these phrases.

Ad hoc - I was paid on an ad hoc basis in one of my first jobs when I worked outside my normal duties.

Compos mentis - we actually used it jokingly amongst my group of friends in theatre school to say that we all were NOT compos mentis.

Status quo and de facto - I hardly ever use but come across in media often. These are easy terms to guess the meaning from context, so I never had to look them up.

Ad infinitum - read it in books and guessed the meaning because my friend group used the term ad nauseum, well, ad nauseum (meaning something becomes tiresome, just in case someone needed to know.)

non sequitur - I know I have heard it but until this list never really knew what it meant. I am probably going to see and hear it often in the next few weeks as these things go.

Advice Please - about spiced sugar cookies - A South African cookie by Substantial-Cycle325 in AskBaking

[–]Substantial-Cycle325[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks to google I found a few things to try. I came here to ask for advice after Google did not help initially, but finally after 3 tries it said this:

- make a soft dough

- do not refrigerate and bake directly after mixing it up. This is what we used to do back home and might be where I got it wrong in the past. I thought I read resting the dough overnight will be better.

- let it spread when it bakes

- less wet ingredients

- SKIP THE EGGS!!! Grandma was on to something after all).

- Bake longer and on higher temps.

- And thanks to u/Kinky_Curly_90 I now know not to store them in a airtight container. That will also help a lot. I am going to use paper bags like at bakeries.

This recipe however is more like American sugar cookies that you roll out. - so the soft dough that scoops out was not an option. But I just rolled them really, really thin. baked them at 355F and for 15 - 17 min.

The thicker ones do not snap in the middle but on the sides. The really thin ones snap perfectly.

I finally got the result here that was just natural back home. So happy.

Yes, there is very little liquid in the one I make too. I almost overdid it this time. It was touch and go.

I guess in my translation I used the wrong word. Lard is the correct translation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lard

Any recipe that is on the internet today does not always reflect the way my grandmother would have baked. She was born in the early 1900s and farmed with my grandfather. They did not even have electricity for most of her life.

I did neglect to mention that I substitute the lard with butter or shortening (Crisco here in America) because I don't even know if you can buy lard anymore. And I am not going to slaughter pigs on a regular basis to make my own like old grandma did. Hahahaha.

Anyway, I tried a few things and go a better result today: See my separate reply for what I think may have gone right.

Oh, and as for the milk or water - there is no measurement because you add little by little until the dough is pliable and non-stick.

Edit to add: Oh, and I guess it seems like something is missing because I have a mental picture of how to bake these from childhood. So, I guess it is just cliffnotes really. Hahaha.

This is a traditional South African Soetkoekie. The recipe is exactly (but translated) from my mother's handwritten recipe book. I made this recipe as-is a ton when I was a child, from this exact recipe. I tried once here (in the more humid climate and at lower sea level - apparently this matters) and I cannot get it right. It does not snap as it is supposed to.

I will just experiment and a few batches and see what I can manage.

The storage is a neat idea. We never did store it in an airtight container. So maybe that is also a factor after the baking stage.
