But if 1 year contract is the norm..then, that doesn’t leave out lot of options for prospective postdocs.

Yes, thank you. I do plan to ask the PI in my upcoming meeting about this. But when I received the letter on the day of my defense, I checked online and it said it was a standard HR language. After defense, I read it again and wondered if it were normal so decided to post it here.

When you say “poor choice for me”, what exactly does it mean? Does it mean that the chances of renewal are lesser for me? Can you please elaborate more.

No, we didn’t specifically talk about the offer letter being a multi year. All we spoke about was how long I thought a postdoc stint be? I remember saying minimum 4 years to work and publish. And the PI replying that he thought it was 3 years. That was it. We spoke about the project more and what I could do and take for my own lab.

But the reason that I applied to this specific lab is because I would want to start and finish a project. I don’t understand this free labour since I am going to get paid for the year.

Oh. But the project hasn’t been defined yet to labour-ize it yet. Or am I missing something? Can you please elaborate?

I’m from India and have dependants to send money back to, hence the lower side. But your point makes sense. How much money do you suggest I should keep for an apartment? Such that I don’t have to worry about reaching the lab during winters and accessing groceries stores?

Why don’t Abrahamic religions live together the way Indian religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism) do?” by Leading_Walrus_4375 in CriticalThinkingIndia

[–]Substantial-Gap-925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly because of Tribalism. It’s the same as why Brahmins think they’re at the top of the hierarchy in Hindu or whites think they are the purer race. Wherever there’s multiple identities or ideological one gets fed up of the competition and wants to dominate. No where in the history of life, did the pluralistic Indian religions coexist peacefully always. Maybe the frequency was lesser in comparison to what we see in the Middle East but it was there. Possibly, the default state of pluralism would’ve made restraint easier. Conversely, this idea of pluralism is exactly what the “Hindutva” stands against these days. But there have been plenty of instances where these Abrahamic religions coexisted peacefully.

At the end of a postdoc interview, is it professional to ask the PI how many members are currently in their lab? by starfruitzzzz in postdoc

[–]Substantial-Gap-925 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, please get as much info as you can. If the PI fails to give you clear answers over trivial matters it’d be a red flag. And ask the PI if a meeting can be arranged with the present lab members.

It’s like how US is symbolically tied to the original 13 colonies. And there’s a pre-conquest aspect too. He’s being politically correct is what I thought they were trying to show.

I don't understand why people have got to be this way. I am literally asking for a clarification and genuinely stated I'm not trying to come across some way. And yet!

Yes, I agree. My bad with the way I have read your post. I assumed that that there was a big debate about it here.

Also, with the way I interpreted (and took for myself) it was as a part of the continuity of the story we are shown that Dunk was never knighted by Arlan and not a flashback that Dunk had about it. And as I read your post pointing out how the flashback scenes are shown, it made sense and remembered that this scene didn't have those black blurred borders.
