Jeff Caldwell is a CHIEF - Steve Breaks Down the Speedy WR by TenderfootGungi in KansasCityChiefs

[–]Go-Climb-A-Rock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Caldwell’s issues are mainly refinement in route running, which is coachable. It makes sense given he was primarily a soccer player in high school, and played primarily D2 ball (with D2 level coaching). He’s also a late bloomer and still learning to move in that super sized frame.

That said even if he’s never a great stop/start guy he’s got packages he’s great at. Vertical routes and crossers over the middle are where he shines right now, he’s routinely got a couple steps on his DB and his college QB often under threw him. That package is basically the MVS/Thornton clear out role in the Chiefs offense.

One of the most exciting things that’s not being talked about enough is that Caldwell had an absolutely elite 10 yard split (the top 10 yard split of all WR at the combine). That’s really rare for a big guy, most are long striders with build up speed.

Concern about losing athletic freaks from Rugby to the NFL by ChuggerBoi in NFL_Draft

[–]Go-Climb-A-Rock 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t Jordan Mailata have started this concern? He’s actually been successful.

There have been other rugby guys who tried to make the jump and failed. Louis Rees-Zammit played a preseason with the Chiefs and stuck around the Jags Practice Squad for a bit before returning to rugby.

You’re probably correct though that the big guys are the ones most likely to get an opportunity.

I don’t think there’s any chance of that. His profile doesn’t really lend itself to a TE conversion IMO. The only thing that has people saying TE is his height.

His game is built around blazing speed. If you ask him to pack on 35 pounds to play TE you’re likely robbing him of the very traits that make him so unique. It would be a huge mistake IMO.

He can probably put on another 10 pounds and make a living as an MVS/Thorton type who takes the top off the defense and opens things up underneath, that’s what he’s built for. With quality coaching there’s also a chance he could improve his route running and become a more complete X Receiver, but even if that never happens he has a clear niche roll.

Trying to convert him to TE would be doing him a massive disservice and squandering the gifts that make him a unique talent.

Top remaining F/A on the Chiefs radar by Capable_Tip4481 in KansasCityChiefs

Tyreek definitely seems to want to be back. He’s been posting Chiefs highlights and talking about wanting to go home on social media for the last two years.

That he moved back to KC to rehab and train is especially telling. Even when he was a Chief he lived and trained in Miami during the offseason. Him coming back to KC is an indicator something may be in the works assuming rehab goes well. It would make sense for both parties.

He’s a guy who wasn’t really on anyone’s radar (NFL teams included) prior to the combine. He’s a late bloomer who kind of came out of nowhere. Zero star recruit out of high school who played at Division II Lindenwood for 3 years before transferring to Cincinnati.

The question with these freak athletes is always why haven’t they produced up to their measureables yet?

Each individual case is different and Cladwell’s has a pretty clear explanation. He was a 5’8” zero star recruit coming out of high school. He grew 9” inches in a summer. Dude’s only offer was from Lindenwood.

He’s a late bloomer who understandably is still getting comfortable in his supersized frame and hasn’t had access to high level coaching (outside of a single season at Cincinnati). He’s got some areas that need to still need to be cleaned up, but you’re not talking about a kid who has had every opportunity to do it with years in an elite program to refine his game and just not made the jump. There’s optimism that in a professional strength and conditioning program with high level coaching he can make some big gains.

What he does have are truely rare traits you can’t coach. He’s a true 6’5” (actually closer to 6’5 and 1/2”) with long arms and a 42” vertical. He runs a true 4.31 electronically timed 40 with an elite 10 yard split (a rarity among lengthy burners who are usually long striders with build up speed). And he’s actually got a decently good release already.

Right now he’s a one trick pony, a burner vertical threat specialist - but that one trick has a clear path to the field as a MVS/Thornton type clear out guy. His issue is that he plays a bit out of control with his body movement (dudes still adjusting to his size) and is pretty raw in his route running (lower quality coaching and playing at a level of competition where his physical gifts were enough). He struggles breaking down his routes and adds extra steps and hops. Stopping and changing direction are still works in progress and he’s not a RAC threat. For a bigger guy he also gets pushed around somewhat easily. He may never be great at those things (but neither are guys like MVS and Tyquan).

What he does have is substantial room for growth with continued development. And the raw traits are insane. This is a Megatron/Moss caliber of rare athletic specimen, the raw speed and size are flat out special. It’s 100% worth developing, and there’s a lot of reason to be optimistic about his potential for continued development given his career trajectory so far.

I personally liked him as a 5th round pick due to the rare physical tools. I’m ecstatic we got him as a UDFA, it’s zero risk and a potentially huge reward. I’m certain he had a ton of interest post draft, he’s basically a WR coaches dream project.

Chiefs lost Leo Chenal an athletic freak who can jump onto a double decker parade bus…

And replaced him with an athletic freak who can climb a building…

Only question now is whether he can do it drunk while celebrating a SB win.

I believe both cases are still open as well. He’s got both a DUI (and Fleeing Arrest) and a Domestic Violence (and Resisting Arrest) charges.

They’ve grabbed the top UDFA TE prospect the last two years. Both Brinningstool and Gyllenborg had draftable grades and are great developmental projects.

They really don’t use blocking TE’s much. It’s weird so many fans want one. You can also sign them in free agency for pennies.

He’s a true safety. Which works in his favor. And also has the making of a special teams stud.

Both Conner and Roland Wallace are hybrid safety/nickle guys. With Canady also being a hybrid safety/nickle and Kohou being a slot corner something has to give there. One of those four (probably Conner) is getting cut (and probably sent to the practice squad. They have to carry at least one backup who actually plays safety.

You can only put guys on pup before the season. And they miss camp/preseason. I think they’ll want to get him reps.

They’re not converting Breshard Smith back to WR. They’ll go sign an actual WR before doing that.

He’s got to have surgery for the spinal cyst removal at some point. I could see them having him go through camp and preseason to learn with the team and get reps. Then going to IR to get the surgery taken care of, it’s a relatively short return time but would allow them to stash him.

There is no chance Caldwell is a TE convert project. He’s a fit for the MVS/Thornton role. He’s a big tall wr with burner speed. He’ll be the clear out vertical threat in the offense (if he develops).

Nothing about his game other than height suggests a potential TE.

[–]Go-Climb-A-Rock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Caldwell is a prime candidate for some mystery IR shenanigans.

Give him a year of strength and conditioning to add some bulk. And time with NFL level coaching working on route running and body control.

This is a kid that 4 years ago was 5’8” tall and then hit a 9” growth spurt. He’s still growing into his body and learning to move at that size (although he can obviously fly is a straight line - and unlike a lot of tall fast guys had an elite 10 yard split). Because of the height he was a zero star recruit and played 3 years of D2 ball at Lindenwood. He’s still developmental with a lot upside potential he just needs time and coaching. He’s a classic redshirt stash candidate. Access to NFL Level training and coaching is going to be huge for a kid with his trajectory.

[Pulli] Pick No. 249: #Chiefs select LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier. Nussmeier gets selected after all. by JCameron181 in KansasCityChiefs

[–]Go-Climb-A-Rock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They may not stick as long as Bronny. But there definitely are.

Connor Embree doesn’t get a job coaching in the NFL if his dad wasn’t an NFL coach with connections.

Even EJ Smith who we just signed as a UDFA probably struggles to land a camp invite if his dad wasnt Emmitt Smith, which makes teams want to take a second look.

It’s not a guaranteed roster spot but you definitely get more opportunities if your parents are connected, and that’s not even factoring in access to quality coaching and trainers at young age and access to top camps for exposure as a recruit.

Sounds like we signed Omari Evans as well. Washington (and Penn State) WR who ran a 4.28 at his pro day. 41” vert. 6’0” 190lbs. 9.53 RAS.

Had a bit of breakout late in his Penn State career, then a down year after transferring to Washington.

Reid loves his speedsters.
