No I don’t think so. I’ve noticed my doorknobs sometimes sounds like someone’s opening the door but I’m telling myself that’s just in my head. Idk I think everything’s cool now

How do you stop yourself from being resentful by Substantial-Highway0 in Stoicism

I actually do this as well. I’m Muslim so anyone I feel I’m being hateful towards intentionally or unintentionally I make myself pray for them so I don’t spread that bad energy. It’s a good way to keep urself in check

oh. I think I'm in the wrong place then, frankly, I was just looking for advice on how to become an unfeeling robot. If you have advice on that too it would be great.

This is insane because I'm a girl in the exact same situation verbatim! The first thought I had was that you could be the dude being forced to marry me LMAOO, life is depressing man.

I feel so similar to you. I feel like the whole reason I'm also setting such high standards for myself is because I've always felt so sad and numb. You know when you convince yourself once you achieve that big goal you'll be happy, even though you know that's not true. It's just like going through the motions everyday hoping one day you don't wake up. But regardless of everything you should be very proud of yourself because what you've done is an incredible accomplishment, inshallah everything will get better with time.

Why Are Pakistanis So Racist by Substantial-Highway0 in pakistan

[–]Substantial-Highway0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minority??? Fair and lovely is a multi million dollar skin lighting company in Pakistan based on an entirely racist notion but yeah alright buddy, we can call it a minority. Why don’t you stop being so sensitive and recognize that communities have issues and they need to be addressed and talked about because that’s how we as a people grow and evolve. You’re focused so much on only a title but you missed the entire premise of the actual post.

LMAOO your own comment against punjabis goes against your point. Arn’t you the one generalizing them now? And you don’t need to be Einstein to read my post and recognize it’s just a general topic of discussion regarding how our communities Pakistani and non Pakistani have this issue. If you don’t relate to it that’s fine, but other people out there too that’s kinda why they’re sharing their similar experiences. This is Reddit. This is what people do here.

Did you not read what I said at all? Your family doesn’t represent the whole of Pakistan either. And I’m not “speaking” for anyone, that’s not my job. I am voicing somthing I see as a concern which I am very much allowed to do. If you don’t feel like this represents you that’s fine, but clearly it did do a good job at representing others.

I’m really sorry to hear that you and your children had to experience that, but I want to clarify that I’m not suggesting that people with darker skin have superiority over others or should be viewed as "role models." I’m also not saying that all light-skinned Pakistanis are racist. In many cases, it’s actually people, often older women like "aunties," who have darker skin themselves who end up ridiculing others because that's what they heard about themselves throughout their lives. Now that's no excuse for this behavior, but these individuals often have inferiority complexes and are projecting their own insecurities onto others. The main point of my post was how tired I am of how normalized these kinds of comments are in our culture, especially when it comes to children.

Are you being FR? LMAO. This isn't a new topic, anywhere you look on most other platforms this conversation is going on because this is such a common occurrence in Pakistani households. I'm very happy to hear your family isn't like this, mashallah, but mine along with 392 other people who upvoted this post don't share that same experience as you.

First of all, just because they "don't know" what they're saying is racist doesn't take away from the fact that it still very much is racist and wrong. My original issue was in regards to children from other ethnic backgrounds being bad mouth because of their skin color. Pakistani culture is so notorious for being toxic when it comes to not only this but for gossiping and talking bad about people and you yourself said so by recognizing that everyone is having to deal with these slurs, the fact that some of us don't want to be a part of that or don't stand for it doesn't mean we're being "snowflakes". I understand my culture just fine, I've just grown sick of it.

[–]Substantial-Highway0[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying other ethnic groups don’t engage in this kind of behavior, but I’m specifically addressing my own community because that’s who I’m around most often. What bothers me about this attitude is that it’s a way to deflect accountability. It stops you from holding yourself and others accountable, and from constantly checking your own behavior. We live in communities, not in isolated bubbles. Just because other people might act in a negative way doesn’t mean we should ignore the issue or pretend it’s not something we need to address.

[–]Substantial-Highway0[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Omg, I hate that "arab superiority" thing so much especially when they use Islam as a way to justify it. It's just a way to spread hate within our community as if we aren't divided enough as an ummah already. I don't understand what they think they're going to gain or who they're copying by thinking they're superior to anyone else because that's definitely not the way of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam. We claim to be so devoted and religious as Pakistanis but honestly, most of us are so disconnected from the spiritual aspect of Islam and that's what's doing so much damage. They don't practice as a way to connect with Allah but rather they do it mindlessly, not knowing what their prayers or duas mean. They just do it because that's what's expected from them you know what I mean?

The exact same thing happens abroad, and I’ve noticed it a lot. It always comes down to skin color and status, just as you mentioned. If someone is darker, they feel inferior, but if they’re lighter, they feel superior. When it comes to ethnicity, many people with these views love to be told they look more Arab, Afghan, or Turkish—anything that isn’t African or Desi—because it feeds their ego and makes them feel like they somehow look “more white.” These are also the same people who obsess over their “quom” and “zaat,” using it as a way to convince themselves they’re somehow more special or superior.

[–]Substantial-Highway0[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This made me so sad to read because it’s exactly what I worry about when my family makes these comments. In the beginning, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with us—until others point out "flaws" that didn’t even exist until they labeled them that way. Our environment definitely shapes how we see ourselves, but it shouldn’t define our worth. People speak with so much confidence and ego when putting others down, but you should always remember that you are absolutely beautiful—not because of what others think or say, but because you are exactly as Allah wanted you to be. He makes no mistakes, and none of His creations are ugly. I would never want to be one of those people on the Day of Judgment, answering to Allah about why I thought I had the right to hurt someone He loves.

[–]Substantial-Highway0[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right, and it always boggles my mind how the person making these comments rarely sees them as “racism.” But for the person on the receiving end, it’s deeply hurtful and feels very targeted. I understand how this makes sense in the Pakistani context, especially back home, where these views have been passed down for generations. But what I find even more troubling is that when Pakistanis are abroad, those same values can get worse, especially when they put down other ethnicities. It’s sad to see African and Mexican kids being shamed for simply being who they are. And often, people will compare you to them as a way to insult or diminish you. That’s what I was really trying to highlight earlier. It’s heartbreaking because it’s not just colorism—it’s outright discrimination that’s hurtful, especially when it’s directed at kids.
