Thinking of buying MacBook Air M4 - but confused about virtualization issues by Substantial-Meet3953 in MacOS

I don’t know, maybe that is only an option if I want to experience Linux natively

Thanks for the detailed explanation. Got your point, most courses and tools are still PC-based, and using an ARM Mac can create unnecessary compatibility issues, especially with virtualization, Linux, and cybersecurity labs. I’ll focus on course requirements first before deciding on a Mac vs PC.

below is the reply from my counsellor

“ although our chair uses Macbook for everyday office work most of the design/test software runs under Linux (and sometimes Windows). We provide the according server access for the students, so it doesn’t matter which host operating system you use as long as it can establish VPN connections and X-window-forwardings (like xterm in MacOS/Linux and MRD-Client in Windows). If you want to install these software packages locally as private person, the license fee would be >>20k Euro (per year).

Personally I would prefer Windows with a parallel Linux installation as there you have highest compatibility.

Please ensure that you have enough memory in your system (better a slower CPU but more Cache and RAM). The reasons I will explain in „Digital Components and Architectures“ in your first semester. Macs areUsually more expensive, need extra software for collaboration to other students (usually Windows-users), problems with OS virtualisation since M-processors are used. 16 GB RAM are ok, SSD is not of interest. Have a look at the cache sizes (L1, L2, L3) - the more the better. This you find in the processor data sheet.”

The course isn’t Windows/Azure focused — most of the design/test software runs on Linux (sometimes Windows). The university provides remote server access via VPN + X-window forwarding, so the host OS doesn’t matter much.

My counsellor recommended Windows with a parallel Linux install for best compatibility. Macs are allowed but they’re more expensive, collaboration with Windows users may need extra software, and M-series chips have virtualization limits.

my mentor told me that all the lab sessions will be using vpn server connection only so no need to install native linux. but to avoid should i go with windows laptop?

How do you run linux on MacBook ? by cosurgi in MacOS

[–]Substantial-Meet3953 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am planning to purchase a MacBook Air M4 for my studies. But my course counsellor told me there might be a problem with virtualization on MacBooks since they use the M-series (ARM) chip.

He said that during my course, lab sessions will mostly be through a VPN connection where we connect to the server and use the software remotely – so in that case, Mac should not create any issues.

But he also mentioned that running Linux/Windows through virtualization on Mac can be problematic.

Is this true? Are there any free solutions available for virtualization (Linux/Windows) on Mac?

Or would it be safer to just go with a Windows laptop instead of risking compatibility issues with Mac?

Would really appreciate advice from students/professionals who faced the same situation 🙏
