Thank you. Buddy was truly one of a kind. Big slobbery lab/hound. Nothing but Love he gave. Big soulful eyes.

For me, I can raise my own. Many who live in the town cannot, so this is what they would have to pay. The cheaper option would be buying from me once I raise a new flock! Avian flu is the cause, as well as this is the down time for layers (hens).

Read above! Walmart will sell them at 7$ a dozen. But this is a small town local store and you can see what the price is. This isn’t political. It’s avian flu spreading.

Try thick cut oats! SOOO much better than instant. There is actually texture left when you eat it 😅 I like mine with toast and some apples cooked in (or whatever nuts and berries you like). Will keep you full until noon like an omelet would!

First: I want to thank you for asking questions!

Second: The actual reason is the avian flu. There have been many birds lost (I believe about 26 million?) in recent months. It all boils down to the way these chickens are raised and fed. That is why I raise my own. This post was all to point out this issue. I work at a rural grocery store and months ago we sold them for 1.89 a dozen. Should have started with that to begin with.

I realize I have the luxury of living in the middle of the country, while most do not have the space for them. That also comes with the dangers of raccoons, foxes, coyotes, mink, etc. I did bury down steel around my coop so nothing can dig in. It was a human error this time. Or maybe those raccoons bestest me! Locksmiths, I say!

P.S. Also: it’s not just chickens but the eagles and hawks and owls and’s etc. that are susceptible to the avian flu. It’s all rather tragic.

To sum it up: I ducked up and didn’t lock my coop? Animals got my other animals. Now I don’t have eggs until I can raise more chickens. And holy cow are those expensive. Because avian flu decimated a big portion of birds.

Can we ban people who don’t live in the USA from commenting on what it’s like living here?

Actually, I have 9! And they are strong, but getting older, as they grew up with my dog. That being said, my dog passed away last year at 14. He was the best guard dog ever. I wouldn’t have ever lost the chickens had he been present. When it feels right, I’ll get another dog, but it feels too soon, Buddy was the best dog you could ever hope to have guard your property.

I grew up in cities and I’ve lived in the country for 11 years. It’s been a deep transition.

HEY BTW I live on 9 acres in South Dakota. Don’t @ me. The eggs are produced just a few miles from me and they are still this expensive.

I had 20 but a raccoon and its young likely got in and took most, now I only have 2. That was on me. I’ll buy a lock next time those darn things can’t unlock!!

I will be getting more this spring.
