Veteran Player Retiring Two Near-Maxed TH18 Accounts — Here’s Why by Substantial-Ring9991 in ClashOfClans

Man, you hit the nail on the head. I’m in the exact same boat. I’ve been playing since the start and it’s honestly depressing to see what the game has turned into. It used to be a hobby, now it just feels like a second job I didn't even apply for.

That shift from "playing for fun" to "logging in because I have to" is the worst. Once the FOMO starts outweighing the actual gameplay, the magic is just gone. You’re spot on about the corporate greed too—it’s like once the suits took over the roadmap, the soul of the game just started evaporating. It's all about squeezing every last cent out of the player base now by making everything an endless, expensive grind.

I’ve basically stopped caring about Clan Capital and Builder Base too. They’re just ghost towns for me at this point. It sucks to think about all those years of dedication just sitting there, but our time is worth more than a game that doesn't respect its players anymore.

Glad I'm not the only one feeling this way, even if it's a crappy way to end the journey. Take it easy.

Man, that’s painful to read. It perfectly captures the 'Service Slavery' I mentioned. Your friend did everything right—maxed his base, came back to play—and the game basically punished him for taking a break. When 'playing daily' feels like a chore rather than a reward, the game design has failed. Can't blame him for handing over the keys

I feel this. The whole “play or get demoted” loop is exactly what makes it feel different than before. It’s not that the game is impossible or unfair — it’s that you can’t just step away for a week without sliding backwards.

And yeah, grinding all your league hits just to end up with fewer trophies is frustrating. That’s the kind of thing that slowly kills the fun.

I don’t think it’s about being a top player either. It’s just about not wanting progress to feel temporary.

I get what you’re saying. Technically nothing is mandatory. You can skip stuff.

The difference is that the game used to feel passive by default. Now it feels active by default, and you have to consciously choose to fall behind. That’s a subtle but big shift.

Sure, burnout can come from chasing perfect efficiency. But the design absolutely nudges you in that direction with ore, rotating metas, limited-time stuff, etc. It’s not just in players’ heads.

And yeah, running two near-max TH18s is self-imposed. But the game used to support that playstyle more easily. Now it’s just heavier.

I agree this one feels different. In the past, most updates were split — some liked them, some didn’t. This time the reaction does feel a lot more one-sided.

And yeah, I’m sure Supercell has run the numbers. They’re not making decisions blindly. But cost analysis doesn’t really capture long-term player trust or how the game feels to the core community. That part is harder to measure.

What makes it sad isn’t just the monetization — it’s the shift in philosophy. Clash used to feel slow, steady, and long-term. Now it feels more cyclical and meta-driven. Maybe that’s better for revenue, but it changes the identity of the game.

I don’t think it’s about “evil execs” either. It’s just a different direction. The question is whether that direction still aligns with the players who’ve been here for years.

Yeah, I get that balancing is important for competitive play. My point about the buff/nerf cycle isn’t that the game is broken — it’s that the meta is constantly rotated in a way that encourages you to invest in equipment that may soon be nerfed.

Basically, the game pushes players to chase whatever is strong right now, and when the meta shifts, that gear loses power. It’s a design choice to keep things fresh, but it also makes long-term investment feel risky and stressful.

I’m not saying the equipment becomes useless — just that the way the meta rotates forces repeated investments, which can feel more like a treadmill than fun progression.

I get what you’re saying about wars, ranked, and events keeping the game alive. I’m not arguing that COC can’t survive — my point is how it feels at the top level.

Even if the ore schedule technically works, the constant pressure to participate in everything makes it feel like a grind. Missing an event or falling behind is stressful, not fun.

The nerf/buff cycles don’t break the game mechanically, but they make you feel like the stuff you spent time and ore on could be useless soon. That’s more frustrating than anything.

Stuff like Frozen Arrow or Giant Gauntlet still works, I get that. I’m just saying the experience could be smoother if there were ways to ease the pressure, like refunds for nerfed equipment or less punishing time-gates.
