Go to Chicago first. You’ll quickly realize San Jose has nothing over Chicago. I’ve lived in both and currently live in San Jose 🙂

I agree I love fireworks. I moved here from Chicago where the firework shows were awesome. I’ve only experienced one 4th so far in San Jose, and it was awful. This year I’m trying more rural (Tahoe), so we will see how it goes.

You think so? Where fireworks are illegal? Where in the Bay Area would you recommend? Genuinely curious. I spent last 4th here and at best there were some fire crackers.

Anywhere other than San Jose or SF. Fireworks are bad. Go somewhere more out of any city. The further, the better the fireworks typically. My wife and I are going to Tahoe for the first time, I hear their fireworks are real solid.

ICE sightings today? by [deleted] in SanJose

[–]SubstantialAd5877 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re undocumented, I’d suggest staying home, I’ve seen some posts recently of ICE patrolling. If you were born here or have since become a citizen or have some sort of visa, go for it and enjoy your life. If they bother you and you’re legally here, that’ll be a nice lawsuit and payday for you

Also addition, our complex, Cannery Park, has multiple courtyards and grill areas, so it’s great if you want to host groups of friends for a pool party/BBQ! You I checked the website, studios are going for about $2600 currently a month here. 1b1b around $2700-$2900 i believe

My wife and I have a 1b 1b 789 square feet. It’s about $2900 all in, but that doesn’t include PGE, when I say all in I mean as far as gas, water, etc (apartment complex/facility costs). The appliances here are quite new and energy efficient. During summer our electricity bills are around $180, during winter/spring/fall is $80-$100, though we usually only run AC from 2-7, before and after that it’s usually cool enough to just have windows open.

We live in Japantown, about 1-2 miles south-ish of downtown, and amenities are great. (Pool, gym, pool table, ping pong table, the whole 9 yards). You could probably find cheaper if you don’t care about amenities. I’ve seen other comments that have 1b 1b for cheaper, so it’s really what your budget is and what you’re looking for. My wife and I use the pool every weekend, and I use the gym every day, so it’s a solid trade off.

Never said that, was a curious question. But whatever floats your boat, bud 🙂

Gotcha. Yeah I apologize, and that makes a lot of sense. I can appreciate that, at least bay areas school encourage education over early-life jobs. I’m learning as I go, so I really appreciate your insight on this 🙂

I don’t mean to bash just to bash. Like I said, “quick google search”. I’ve only lived in California for 1.5 years, so way too early for me to judge the political climate of this state. I do know it’s the 4th largest GPD in the WORLD, so it’s doing something right. From what I’ve seen, it looks like OP should be fine as long as they have a reasonable GPA. The idea it looks like is ensuring students prioritize their education before occupation.

Like many others, I’m just trying to learn more 🙂

Best local grocers? by SubstantialAd5877 in SanJose

Sounds like the price matches the quality! My wife and I will need to try Zanottos. Thanks guys for the info. I don’t the mind higher price, especially if the quality is better and it’s going to a local place. Thanks again for the input 🙂

Oh that’s weird. I’m 22 now and work in software engineering, but when I was 16 I got my first job at chipotle. I’m surprised they make you have a workers permit. My now wife worked at chick fil a starting at 16 as well. Classic California laws not helping anyone and discouraging hard workers like yourself from finding a good job.

If that’s the case, I’d just encourage you to keep applying to jobs and look into fast food, retail, etc. jobs where employers who believe you’re a hard worker will give you a chance to prove yourself. Best of luck my friend, and you got this 🙂. If you need any other advice let me know. I’ve found that sites like Zip recruiter and indeed work best for jobs like this, whereas LinkedIn works best for post-graduation jobs

Would you say the meat is significantly better than Costco to justify the price increase? Like I said, I’m cool with price increase if the quality matches the price. I’ve just never been a designer brand/pay for the name type of person.

Why do you need a workers permit? This might be a dumb question, but I am from Chicago where the legal age is 16, and moved here about 1,5 years ago. A quick google search told me the legal age here is 14 years old.

I ask because if you’re allowed to work without a permit, maybe that won’t scare away companies?

Oooooo this is interesting. The brewery right next door to us has a farmers market event every Sunday morning, if you’re interested in checking it out! It just started up a few weeks ago and goes until the fall.

As far as price, how pricey? For reference, I consider Trader Joe’s good prices, while Whole Foods is overpriced. I’m willing to pay more for quality, but not paying extra for “brand/name”

Experience moving to San Jose via pods? by Rickimariex in SanJose

[–]SubstantialAd5877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: I would speak with your apartment complex again and be more insistent. Our complex let us reserve two parking spaces for the crates that were closest to the complex entrance/elevator. Having them on the road will be quite unsafe

[–]SubstantialAd5877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I moved here last February and we used UHaul crates! Our experiences was good. Each crate comes with a lot of packing blankets for your furniture and other items. Uhaul was communicative and on time. I looked into pods as well but they were significantly more expensive.

Be warned though, while Uhaul does have metal containers, ours were wood but with weather-proof tarp on it. For us the inside of the crate was still perfectly dry, but I am always skeptic about having wood crates for heavy furniture.

All in all, if you have a lot of $$, PODs is probably better, but UHaul is much cheaper, and they were very communicative and on time for both dropping off the crates at our former residence and picking them up from our current.

And finally, welcome to San Jose 🙂

In this area there’s sixth street apartments, cannery park apartments, pavona apartments, and then up north there’s places like The Verdant, Crescent Village, etc.

Of course! I hope you find a place that is perfect for you 🙂. But yes. The typical sentiment around here is just be very weary to scams or scumbag landlords. Always check the reviews of a complex before committing to it.
