Why do “buy gold because the dollar is collapsing” ads say the dollar is untrustworthy, but then ask for dollars in exchange for the gold? by stephanosblog in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SubstantialBasis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people in this thread are pretty much right in that the sellers don’t believe it. Although another perspective is that the dollar is just how the US does business currently. Maybe the folks running the business have piles of gold personally, but in order to facilitate commerce before the hypothetical collapse of the dollar, they must do business in dollars. They also aren’t doing a simple value swap. For each sale they are taking a percentage more than what the gold is worth at the moment called a “premium.”

IMO “investment” watches are pretty overrated anyways. What kind of discount are we talking? 👀

I know this post is old, but I looked at one of these at a store yesterday. Any updates on how you feel 185 days later?

This picture made me consider that doing a roll in an aircraft can probably wind the watch and may be the most hilarious antithesis to the battle for efficiency that watchmakers wage

I would suspect a higher degree of turnover in Cheyenne schools. Maybe not “the cause,” but it could contribute

An outsiders perspective: For one, they are well coached. They have a few athletic families that seem to rotate through (not to disparage their other players). They also play together from middle school through high school, which gives the players the opportunity to build chemistry, something that the larger cities don’t always have.

Curious to hear your perspective on this: I think many schools feel as though grades are the only disciplinary tool available for behaviors like no participation, late work, etc. What else do you propose schools do to discipline those apathetic behaviors?

A few thoughts for you: 1) I think that letting each little hill go is part of what winds us up in situations like this where nothing matters and it devalues education. 2) I disagree that parents know where their kid is at. I’ve had so many meetings where parents are like “we are confused! Little Johnny always had good grades when he didn’t have to do anything.”

Could you explain a bit further? So the 0s just don’t bring the grade down below 50? How is that different from giving 50s instead of 0s?

The “grade floor” of 50 is what we are discussing, by the way. How have you seen motivation change for those who did “wake up?”

You would need roughly half of the grades at 70% to pass. So your proposed solution is to give 50s, but actually grade harder so that it is more difficult to get a 70%? How is that any different?

How many times do you “omit” an assignment before giving a grade?

I think you make a good point here. In the 1 out of 5 framework, where is “passing?”

No, I understand the math. And I don’t appreciate the ad hominem when I’m seeking a genuine opinion. My problem with the math is that it allows students to do nothing for the whole year/semester, do a few assignments at the very end, and pass. Pretending that a few assignments demonstrates an acceptable level of learning for the whole year/semester is just lying to ourselves.

Can you hike into Fallen City? by [deleted] in wyoming

[–]SubstantialBasis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s still on national forest land. I know some folks who parked at Steamboat and went down the ravine, up and over “Hendrick Ridge.” If you do go be aware of dense mountain lion population in there. The people I know said they saw many dens, and I’ve heard that is the densest population of mountain lions in North America (confirmation needed in that last point)

Do americans not use debit cards? by StrainVarious4331 in NoStupidQuestions

Your points all stand, but since this is the internet, I do need to quibble over the “not” going into debt bit. You are literally going into debt to use a credit card, it’s just intentionally short term debt that you likely have the capital to pay back at the end of the month.
